On the Road: Young girl hatches rescue plan to save family

As part of our continuing series "On The Road," Steve Hartman met 13-year-old Shelby Grebenc. When her family hit troubled times, the young girl used a loan from her grandmother to buy chickens and started a successful business selling eggs.

I figured out the amount that this girl got from doing the chickens and it's actually quite a bit of money. If you do $15,000 divide by 12 that's $1,250 a month. To that family that was a house payment and groceries. she truly saved her family. I honestly wish that I could be as amazing as her.

Shelby is a bold and brave kid! This entire story should inspire everyone to work for universal healthcare for all Americans. I raised Easter chicks into laying hens as a kid - and love chickens! What a smart choice to raise them, because agriculture makes better kids. Shelby is in great company, too. A distant cousin of mine, Deborah Devonshire (Duchess of Devonshire) kept chickens, too. On the cover of her book "Wait For Me" she is pictured with her 🐔 flock. She loved chickens so much that she did not care what anybody thought about it. So... you go, Shelby!
