He doesn’t sing it for her because he knows that would create a relationship between them-and he doesn’t feel like he deserves it.

Beautiful. As a father and a grandfather, I found the movie unspeakably sad. I get a lump in my throat just watching this clip.

The reason he said that he didn't remember is because he is afraid to let himself love his daughter. He also doesn't think he deserves to be loved by her. He doesn't trust happiness.

One of the (not so many at all) times that the “right” actor won the Oscar… Either way, Duvall’s performance is brilliant and legendary, all them awards are subjective and shouldn’t mean all that (especially when most of the time they’re giving out for some bullshit reasons and such)…..

He didn't tell her because it hurt too much to remember. Back then it was a gesture of hope for a blissful life for a father and growing daughter. But that didn't happen. It it kills him that it was his fault. As the saying goes, better to let sleeping dogs lie. Every time he walks to the window I feel the memories of the happiness of a shared and bonding love obliterated by the selfishness of insecurity.

CM ONHITME - I’ve seen that comment from the time you said it but never really got what you meant. Words have a lot of different meanings so maybe I’m taking “nasty-scene” too literally. I associate it with vulgarity or rudeness. Intense to the point of discomfort? A powerful scene, but I don’t get “nasty”. I guess shouldn’t have waited 9 months to bring it up. Some movies don’t warrant a discussion that picks at details; if I taught a film class we’d discuss every frame of this one. I really think it’s an underrated character study.

@caseyjoanz

Patrick McGlynn - That could be it. She was intent on convincing the daughter he was worthless. It struck me, when his daughter reminded him of it he was too overwrought to deal with the poignancy and denial spared him showing any emotion. But I think your explanation is consistent with his effort to stop contending with her mother.
@haroof
@haroof 6 жыл бұрын
I don't think he wanted to form a bond with his daughter. He's a troubled man and knows he can't be the father his daughter wants.
@caseyjoanz
@caseyjoanz 6 жыл бұрын
Haroof -This is what I liked most about this movie: there’s so much more to it than the “slow, nothing happens, not much of a story” criticisms from those who didn’t get it. When the daughter leaves and Sledge lets her words sink in before he begins singing “On The Wings of a Dove”, the intensity put a lump in my throat. That’s not something I get from exploding cars or contrived romances. The fact that life doesn’t have a formula or events that are the sum of identifiable causes makes it a movie I’ll continue to watch over and over.

I'd feel exactly the same way if it was my son...I left him when he was just 2 years old...I left his cruel mother, actually...and I've been grief stricken for 28 years...it's just too painful to bear when your child who you weren't there for when he needed you reminds you of when you were there for him or her...

Life's complicated. He's a failed and broken man. Perhaps embarrassed he was a father that abandoned his child even it it was to keep his distance to not interfere with her life while growing up. He can't cross that emotional bridge with her or they'll be connection formed which terrifies him that he will only disappoint her again......just as he's been a disappointment his entire life. This is a complicated movie. Sadly, few appreciate these kinds of movies.

Weird casting having 30-year-old Ellen Barkin play 18-year-old Sue Ann. Diane Lane would have been a much better fit as she was 18 at the time, and she would have nailed the role. That said, Barkin is okay in the part. She pulls it off emotionally. I just never buy her as 18!

She was too old, though I've never seen any actress barring possibly Sissy Spacek look more like "girl from poor part of Texas." I also think the Coen Brothers ripped off her look in this movie for Kelly McDonald's in "No Country For Old Men" but don't quote me on that. They should have made the character older at least
