On the Wrist, from off the Cuff: Citizen Promaster - NY0141-10LE, Hacking Movement plus Sapphire!

So, essentially Citizen did what Seiko should’ve done: they gave their iconic dive watch an update. Seiko deletes the SKX and gives us a watered down (except for the movement) derivative . Citizen upgrades the NY0040, with a better movement, nicer hands, sapphire glass and a 120 click bezel. Kudos to Citizen, I might pick one up in blue, gorgeous dial.

True. I wouldn't be savagely against the "5KX" if the price was right; it's not a $200 watch, but a $160 at best - and even then it still gets violent competition from Orient and quite possible from Citizen as well. I think that the best Seiko budget diver currently is the Turtle SRP777 (and the likes of it), which is more expensive but at least very interesting and original.

I received mine 2 days ago. It's really is outstanding. Wears great on my 7" wrist. Beautiful dial. I think the strap gets better with use, as far as it sticking. + 4 sec/day. Completely recommend this watch. Citizen is really killing it lately!

Sold my Seiko SKX009 and bought the 1st generation of this one which has the deeply engraved logo on the caseback and non hacking version of the movement so far its been doing GREATER than my SKX, a watch that you wouldn't worry about

Thanks for review! I have a BN0191-80L which is a blue dial eco drive, and find this automatic very attractive. Both are dark blue but this new automatic seems to have a nicer blue with a sunburst effect when illuminated by a bright light. I really like that!

I have the same watch and the strap keeper issue does improve. I have had mine now for about 4-5 months and I use it in rotation and the the keepers do become easier to use! I paid about GBP 230.00. Much better value than Seiko!!!

My NY0040 was build in 2021 and has the movement 8204 which is hackable. Best of both worlds imho.

@@stefpix The diameter of the 0040 is 42 mm, the one of the 0141 is 44 mm. So it‘s a bit smaller, it is very comfortably on my 17 cm wrist.

Sorry but an SKX despite its 42.5mm diameter has a very compact 46mm lug to lug length. The old 42mm NY0040 is 47.5mm lug to lug. These new 44mm ones are 49.8mm lug to lug. That’s a huge increase over the SKX or NY0040. I wish they just did a sapphire upgrade on the older NY0040 divers. 44mm is too big.

In my opinion It really depends on your wrist size. Why I understand that 42mm is the classic model I had to sent it back because it looked like a child-watch on my wrist (7.4 inches / 19cm). So I am actually happy that Citizen offers this larger version because otherwise I couldn't wear a blue Promaster. Best, Steffen

Just an observation, regarding the Keepers on that Citizen Strap; While the Silicon may contribute to the problem of fastening on the Watch properly. I would suggest; that the principle reason, for that difficulty is that Keepers were made a tad too small. Bet if You replace those with some other Silicone Keepers. (Not made for that Watch) It would be fine. just sayin'.

Thanks to your review I've just bought one as a workhorse for regular swimming pool trainings as well as vacation on the sea choice... I adore such kind of dark blue dial and diver stylistic appearence with great lume and overall readability not to mention very reasonable dimensions and weight (only 106g) for my 17.5cm wrist, it's for sure! But at the same time, as quite experienced and demanding user, I cannot skip the dark side of the moon for Citizen divers in general (and this specific one is NOT an exception!): - screw-down crowns on Citizen divers are way-way worse than Seiko ones, alas!! Too few thread twists and so poor tactile feedback leads to permanent uncertainty if you tighten the crown enough or not and if you break the screw at all with inproper force or angle trying to screw it - and it sucks! I'm pretty sure I could have been perfectly in peace with this specific crown issue when I have to deal with such awful experience on Eco-Drive models like BN0151-17L or BJ7000-56E (Nighthawk) or BN0000-04H (monocoque diver) or BN0110-56E (Royal Marines Commando) cause with it's "grab and go" quartz You can touch the crown on rare ocassions once per two month or so just to switch the date in absence of perpetual calendar... But in case with mechanical watches, when You will screw and unscrew the crown inevitably on the very regular basis - it sucks indeed! So I do prefer to have this exact model with Eco-Drive instead of Automatic caliber, but alas! All available Eco-Drives from this price range have only Mineral glass (no sapphire as an option at all!) and completely different case shapes (much more rectangular / edgy and sharp, not even close so cushion and smooth!!) - this is the main reason I bought exactly NY0141-10LE: - it's budget price to value ratio is unbeatable for sure! (supphire, design, lume, Diver's 200m, appearance and ergonomics even for RRP aka $299 is completely worth it!) Otherwise, if I'd consider upper price range, my choice would be Seiko SRPE07 King Turtle Save The Ocean Great White Shark or Seiko Sumo SSC759 Quartz Chrono (which I already have indeed - it's one of my favorite dive watch of all times but in some respects to big and heavy for me for everyday usage even on the silicon strap)

Thx for the video 👍 I'm on the fence for a solar power dive style watch and this one is definitely under consideration maybe a bit too rugged for everyday wear and therefore I'm looking at the Seiko 43.5mm prospex solar as well which is somewhat more expensive but I reckon more elegant, decisions decisions 🤔

Citizen US website has a ton of mall/fashion watches. Citizen European and Italian websites have so many more options for cool Promaster diver watches. This is not yet available in the US as of 2023. Anyway watches in the USA are often more expensive.

Thanks again for the video, it helped me with the decision to order this watch, and I got it yesterday. Beautiful blue dial! It's my very first automatic Citizen. The rubber strap makes it significantly lighter. Still I prefer metal bracelet. The black option of the same watch has stainless steel bracelet. It should be possible to order only a bracelet, I hope that. I agree about the stickyness. When the parts of the strap get contact with each other, it's a certain struggle to get it right.

I have the same movement in the older Promaster. Yes. It has a very loud rotor. It even vibrates the watch when it spins. I got used to it.

Movement was updated several times. This one is the latest one with hacking function. Design of movement is 25-30 yo, but it is working so why to develope something new? There is a sapphire glass and ceramic bezel? Would by nice but then it wouldn't be a tool watch anymore 😉
