Joe bugner was a great fighter, he had 83 fights with only 13 losses 1 draw, he was European commonwealth and champion of australian. And he got a version of the world title at the age of 48, against bonecrusher smith, he boxed from 17 years of age till he was 49,he was never knocked out, but was stopped, he knocked out 41 opponents, sadly now he has dementia and lives in a care home in Australia. God bless you joe.

Sad to hear I always rated him my uncle who was well respected as a boxer and trainer was at the cooper fight he said he beat him and never got the respect he deserved in the UK DIDN'T BLAME HIM FOR GOING TO AUSTRALIA and most of the knowledgeable boxing fraternity agreed

Two of the most aesthetically pleasing boxing styles to ever clash. Or rather, two variants on the same style. But definitely one of the cooler matchups in history.

Yeah. I'm just remembering this fight today. While Ali would be known for coming into the ring wearing a $3,000 robe compliments of Elvis, Bugner would score a few more interesting fights including with Joe Frazier, his son Marvis Frazier, James "Bonecrusher" Smith, Greg Page, Frank Bruno, Ron Lyle, James "Quick" Tillis, Earnie Shavers, and Jimmy Ellis.

I've never seen this fight before but I've heard about it. I don't like to watch my friends fight. Joe Bugner used to be the patron of an RSL on the Goldie where him and his wife Marlene retired to. I used to cook their dinner every night and after work, relaxed playing pokies with Marlene and a couple of friends while Joe worked the room with the Australian and other countries diggers. A true gentleman and he went the distance with Mohammed Ali. Not a small feat. He also retired with a world title which he defended and won via a disqualification.

I met Aussie Joe on a set at MovieWorld about 20 years ago, a really nice guy, one of the few "talent" who would give us extras the time of day during breaks, I was very happy to meet him.

Pointless discussion. Can only ever compare men in their era (where do you start, what age do you want each boxer at? In this era would Ali have even taken up boxing or been anything like the person he was then? If you're getting even more fantastical and plonk him Ali in a modern crowd or vica versa would either man be able to focus on the fight vs. the differences around them? Etc etc. It's such a moot point there's zero point debating it. You have absolutely zero idea how Ali would handle today's boxers and vice versa). Better form opinions on today's boxers and who they're soon to fight, than waste your time with such banal (some would say asinine) debates.

Please... Chuvalo, Frazier, Norton and Spinks went the distance twice with Ali as well. Norton did it three times. Any boxing fan should know that Bugner wasn't the only fighter to do this. However Bugner was the only fighter to go the distance with both Ali and Frazier.

Also Muhammad Ali's reach is far more than what is listed because he could stretch and elongate his arms much more than other fighters and when he was on his toes would give him extra reach
