I was 10 when the Neo Geo came out, and was lucky enough that the local 7-11 had one in the front corner, so I got to enjoy it for years. I didn't even know there was a home version for years afterwards, and I absolutely never saw one for sale until used game stores started popping up.

They were mail order only in the states as far as I'm aware, as they were super niche even when they were current gen. There was a show called video power (I think) that used to review games for it every week and I remember when they would tell the retail price for the games knowing that it was never something my parents were going even consider buying for me if I asked, no matter how cool the games looked or how much I wanted it for Christmas or birthday or whatever the gift giving occasion.

From December 1990 to summer of 1991, you could buy with the Neo•Geo AES "Gold System", for $550, or the "Silver System" for $399, from many game companies who advertised in the back of EGM, and other magazines. SNK started selling them in Electronic Boutique and Babbage's stores in summer of 1991. The price jumped to $649.99 for the system (Gold System), and $199.99 per game. I bought a few games locally.

The closest one was over an hour away and whenever I did get to go there I remember them only having genesis and super NES stuff primarily. We had KayBee toys closer but they were basically the same with their games.

Our local stores had a very small section for Neo-Geo. Maybe 4 games, and one system display box. I still have my copy of Blue's Journey from Babbage's, with the $199.99 tag on it.

I was born in 87, but honestly, it wasn't until the 2000s when I was properly introduced to the NeoGeo... also, the Turbo Grafx-16. Both consoles completely flew past my radar during the 90s.

"you probably shouldn't go on NEO GEO message boards" is fantastic advice 😂 Dude, somehow I had no idea you had a channel. This was great. I really like the trial as a framework for videos. As for the NEO GEO itself, I'll say this. Emulation for it is very good and certainly a great and inexpensive way to go. However, I will say that the NEO GEO is the only console from this era that I personally think feels different on real hardware vs emulation. I'm not the type of person that can usually tell any difference when I'm playing something on emulation vs real hardware through at least the PS1. I had been playing neo Geo via emulation for years and was shocked I could tell the difference when I got my AES. Yeah, it is expensive to collect for it but if you really enjoy the AES or MVS consolized experience like I do, pairing it with a NeoSD flash cart is the way to go. Yeah, the pro version of the cart is like 600 but that's how much it would cost for just a few AES games anyway. At least this way you can play the whole library on real hardware. Anyway, great video man. I'm genuinely impressed.

When I was a kid my friend had Neo Geo AES and also NBA Jam and Mortal Kombat 2 arcade machines. Going for sleepovers and staying up all night to play these machines was a blast. His parents had fled from Iran to the US when the Shah fell and they pampered and protected their son very much doting on him and worrying that something bad could happen like some of the bad stuff they'd seen.

Nice video! I was a pre-teen when fighting games began taking over arcades in the early 90s and I was immediately enamored with the likes of SF2 and MK. Our local bowling alley had a Neo Geo cab right next to the MK2 cabinet and we regularly played Samurai Shodown, KoF 94, and Metal Slug on it. I was also an avid reader of EGM and Gamepro and I would always drool over those Neo Geo reviews and, being the fighting game nut that I was, I desperately wanted one. I think you summed it up perfectly though when you said that you couldn't even have FOMO about the Neo Geo. It was just too far out there to even dream about. Luckily enough, I am a new AES owner who had the skills to mod his own system. So I finally have my Neo Geo with Unibios, an LED mod, and clean RGB connected to my Sony CRT. I have a Sam Sho 2 and I just got a multicart. Great start to your KZbin channel! I'm subbed!

I paid £27 for my AES and the most I ever spent was £170 on a cart ( Sam 0, KOF03 and SVC were all £170 when I got them ) until I dropped proper money on a Neo SD pro that is. Many of my games were £20 each. Also got 2x Hyper 64’s for £25 for the pair, one of which I still have ( sold the other 1 for £150 ) I may have spent £300 on Buriki one but I always wanted to play that game 🤷‍♂️

Given the current market for the aes i agree emulation or go the consolized route,if you want to play on the original hardware.Back in the mid 2000's i had a aes but it was too damn expensive for me so i sold it all and change over to a cmvs. By the way when the neo-geo came out in 1990,i was in my teens at that point. So owning one back then was definitely a dream.Now i've turned 50 as of last year thus really making me feel really old that it was that long ago.

Those magazine ads back in the day were hilarious, I too remember feeling incredibly inadequate with my Genesis. I bought an AES on ebay back in around 2005 with Magician Lord and Samurai Spirits, but haven't been able to afford any games for it since haha. One of these days I'll have to get a flashcart and SCART cable for it to use it more, it would be amazing to be able to play Puzzle Bobble or Metal Slug on original hardware!

9:20 Note that "cartridges" are/were sometimes called "cassettes" in Japanese. It's a bit weird. Like, there was a game distribution service in Japan for the SNES and GB called "Nintendo Power", which was basically a flashcart that you could pay to have written with a game. The SNES cart was called the "SF Memory Cassette" but the Game Boy cart was called the "GB memory Cartridge". My point here is that he's not referring to cassettes that use tape.

The funny thing that can be seen on current homebrew is that a lot of Neo Geo games would run fine withe almost all the graphics on the genesis (and likely the snes), the main hold back would be cartridge size. However for a cool 120 usd per game it could likely be done at the time and still be a lot cheaper.

Y'know, in the early 90s I wanted one of these systems too and there was no way I could ever afford one. Now as an adult I have an AES 3-6 with all the mods I've done myself. It's freaking awesome and a real callback from that time. Games are stupid expensive still though so I'm glad there's things like the NeoSD and similar. Generally speaking, the RGB bypass will sharpen any revision and if you're going to get one of these consoles, SCART to a good HD upscaler for a modern TV is a must unless you're insisting on going to go with a high end old skool CRT.

Very nice job on the video. Having owned a Neo•Geo AES since 1990 I wanted to add a bit of my perspective on it. 1. The Neo•Geo AES was launched in the USA in December 1990. (Wikipedia, and other sources, often wrongly state that it was released ONLY in Japan in 1990, and not until 1991 in the USA. This is of course false). I bought mine on 1990.12.18. 2. The prices were originally as follows: $399 for the "Silver System", which contained the console, ONE arcade stick, and NO game. And $550 the Neo•Geo "Gold System", which contained the console, TWO arcade sticks, and ONE cart. You had the option of picking between either Baseball Stars Professional, or NAM-1975. (Soon after the launch, SNK woukd also add the option of Magician Lord as the choice of game cart).**Again, Wikipedia and other sources often claim the system was $650 at launch. This is untrue. They are confusing the deal SNK USA had made with brick and mortar retailers, Babbage's, Software Etc., and Electronics Boutique. That happened in later Summer 1991, and for $649.99 MSRP. 2. With Metal Slug 3, Sengoku 3, and others reportedly only releasing print runs of only 500 copies each. This is a big part of the reason why those are now selling for $3000 for a mint copy. 5. One last thing. People tend to think of the Neo•Geo as a VS. Fighting system.. While SNK has some amazing fighters, they also have a pretty good blend of other genres as well. I went through all of the 157 games and have done some quick math, I suck at math!.. but I've come up with 37.5%. That's the total number of fighting games on the Neo•Geo. (50 out of 157). To put this number in perspective, the Neo has 24 sports games, 16 shooters (Shmups), and 16 run & gun games. Sure it's a lot of fighters, but people often tend to believe that the system is MOSTLY fighters. Often people throwing out numbers like "90% fighters" "75%", but no.. It's 37.5%, so please correct those people when you get the chance. I love the Neo•Geo, and I love it for it's classic arcade style action, sports, among others. -MattH.

Yeah, even getting a consolized MVS with a Universe BIOS is cheaper. You can get them for even as low as under $200 at times, and carts are generally far less expensive than AES counterparts. If you absolutely have to have real hardware, that's going to be the most realistic option.

Don't forget the Sega Genesis had the same exact processors the AES/MVS had as well. The Neo Geo AES does not have hardware sprite scaling. No, they used the same method that Sega developers did when implementing scaling on the Genesis. That is they used software scaling to get the job done and with massive amounts of storage they were easily able to pull it off. That and their VDP was lightyears ahead of what was included inside the Genesis.

The NEO GEO is, was, and always will be the holy grail of Arcade home gaming from the 16-Bit and 32-Bit generations. The NEO GEO was always rediculously expensive, always elusive (i only ever knew one person that actually owned one back then), was never available to buy in retail shops - only through import in the back of Video Game magazines, and was the powerhouse console everyone of my generation coveted as the one we all wanted, but no-one had. The prices have skyrocketed to absolutely insane levels as the NEO GEO was only sold in limited numbers, so availability is very pricey at best...and that doesn't account for the games either. The NEO GEO has the status of being the number 1 console of choice for home Arcade gaming, and that status has only grown over time. If you own a NEO GEO, you're the Man, simple as that. As for the rest of us lowlifes, we can but dream... Cool video. Cheers.

If you are over the age of 50, you may not have heard of the Neo Geo because you weren't a HardCore Gamer who was in the know about what was around at the time. You may have had a Nintendo SNES or even a SEGA Genesis at the time, but outside of those two maybe an Atari 7800 just to play the older classic Atari 2600 games, anything else is simply a blur because outside of the core gamer audience, nobody else would even know what the Neo Geo was much less could even afford the system at the time.

Wow... Fucking AWESOME video man. Really well done! I know EXACTLY what you're talking about referring to "unobtanium", I lived it too. I am a little older then you, born in 1976 but I remember what it was like reading those articles in gaming magazines and actually playing the Neo Geo in the Arcade for the first time... It was defeating! I had a Genesis (as the SNES had yet to come out when the NEO GEO first made the scene) and was super proud of that system. To see how handily the NEO GEO trounced it was shocking. And the fact that the price was so outrageous was the kicker. I knew I would NEVER own one. I also remember the first time I played emulated NEO GEO games too. It was around 2001 and I tried it out on MAME but the games didn't run well. I found an emulator that solely ran NEO GEO games and it was AMAZING! I can't remember the name of it but it was excellent. Now MAME is great too so I use that. I actually have a 4 game NEO GEO arcade cabinet with a swapped out 27" CRT for the OG 25" and it is amazing! The internals are swapped out and I have a PC in there running a Hyper Arcade System setup that emulates EVERYTHING from the arcade and consoles from the 70's to the PS1 and Sega Saturn era. Literally tens of thousands of games. So I look back at myself in the arcade first playing the NEO GEO (the same cabinet I currently have) and smile. Thanks for the excellent video. It was GREAT!

Great video, well detailed and reasoned. If you want "real hardware", I would recommend a consolized MVS over an AES. But! If you feel like emulation is intimidating but have a modern console, look at the ACA NEOGEO releases from Hamster. It's not the full library, but the emulation in the ports are solid. For me, buying them on Switch is a fantastic option because I get the full games on my big screen AND a portable. And Magician Lord is only $8 USD. ;)

Ah yes, the AES. The console only the foolish own. The _only_ reason I own an AES is because I found an AES totally broken for the okay(?) price of $220. When I got it I realized it had trace damage. Someone, long ago, had spilled some sort of drink inside, the kind of thing you'd think would happen to an NES or something affordable. Once traces were repaired, the system sprang to life. Of course, I didn't know this, and had also bought a diagnostics bios as well as the Unibios since I had planned to do that anyway. Plus the system didn't come with a power supply, video cable, controller or game. All had to be sourced. True, the console was cheaper than a fully working one, but after all was said and done, I had probably put in about $450 into the AES and that was after working on fixing it. Don't get into NeoGeo unless you're crazy.

The 2D graphics of the Neogeo arcades were outstanding, the only thing that could rival those were the FMV technology that was around cutting edge PCs and arcades., like Myst on PCs and Pit Fighter and Mortal Kombat on the arcades and the 3D technology from the early Namco and SEGA arcades, Capcom started to clap back with their new arcade boards they started to use in the Marvel games and Street Fighter Zero, but basically the 32 bit consoles started to kill the Neogeo, people don´t realize but the 3D gaming really started to be more impressive than the arcade 2D games., those literally started to die in 1994 when those consoles started to show their new tech

And yet all these years later NeoGeo games are still played the most by my friends and I. The only games that compete are the Street Fighter games. NeoGeo as a whole was an experience and the entire package was a wonderful thing showcasing the best of videogame art and passion for gaming. I miss this type of pixel work dearly. In a landscape of 3D passionless unreal engine sameness, the NeoGeo is a beacon of what once was. So those of you out there who still can't afford original hardware don't worry, you can partake of the arcade deliciousness that is the SNK Neo Geo. I bought a neo-geo console back in 1990 when i was 13. Paper route and my dad chipped in the rest. The games cost $200 each at the time, so I would buy one, beat it, then return it a few days later for a refund and buy another one. This was at babbages and the kid that worked there would let me do that. Baseball Stars was my favorite game. I had it hooked up to my dad's 32" sony trinitron. Good times!

Another excellent episode and just like you I didn't have any Fomo either back then because...there was absolutely NO WAY my parents would buy that thing and even as an adult with kids the two most expensive systems I've bought for them over the years was the Wii U when it first came out and the Xbox One. I hate to repeat another pro-emulation comment but it really rings true in the Neo Geo situation even more than the Famicom. Even though I could save up money and get a Neo Geo now, it just doesn't justify the investment at all. For $1,000 you could build a beefy PC rig that not only plays Neo games with 99% perfect emulation but all other modern PC games as well. I'm glad you mentioned the slow down issue with Metal Slug 2 because that's another thing...these days certain emulators have CPU overclocking hacks where you can boost the Mhz of the 68000 thereby completely eliminating that issue all together better than the original. Now sure there's the digital download vanilla route but even when I downloaded some of those Neo Geo digital ports on Switch, the input lag is so bad it stymies the experience even further than open source emulation. Then the other issue is sure you can find KOF or Samurai Showdown games but there's so many 3rd party Neo Geo games that are very difficult to find and can only be played today on MAME or FB Neo. So yeah I'm sorry but if there's any prime candidate for emulation by god it's the Neo Geo 4 sho lol 🤣

Ha. Good video. Yes, the Neo Geo was too fucking expensive back in the day. I want to say, it was 1992 when my father bought the Neo Geo second hand and still paid 900$ for two arcade stick controllers, the AES Gold system, memory card and 5 games. Even then, second hand, it was too fucking expensive. A couple years later with playstation around the corner, my father sold the system and Neo Geo collection, bought playstation and we never looked back.

I don't understand hacking up a perfect AES for RGB / Unibios. If you're going to do that, then just get an MVS since it already outputs better RGB and most you can just swap out the bios whenever you want and MVS carts are cheaper and easier to find or you can get a multi.

​@@8bitesquire for the record, my arcade cabinet has a couple thousand arcade games on it. And yet all these years later NeoGeo games are still played the most by my friends and I. The only games that compete are the Street Fighter games. NeoGeo as a whole was an experience and the entire package was a wonderful thing showcasing the best of videogame art and passion for gaming. I miss this type of pixel work dearly. In a landscape of 3D passionless unreal engine sameness, the NeoGeo is a beacon of what once was.

There were a few modifications that needed to be made to make the MVS cart run on an AES. I think it involved a few jumper wires being soldered. Really all you would need is the cartridge adapter that I featured in the video

The pinouts aren’t the same either. It was to prevent operators from buying the (then) cheaper AES carts to run in cabinets.

I just started too know NEO GEO and the selling point for me is that you can play the games exactly like on a big arcade machine ! But is it really that better ..maybe at the time it released . It was developed for arcade owners too reduce cost off a new big cabinet and not for the normal consumer. For a collector point off view you buy it for other reasons like a stamp etc.. now it is nostalgia and gets more expensive fast. The games were developed too make you insert coins and they are difficult ! I bought a few on xbox series and they are ok but not as fun or good.

I wouldn't mind owning one,, I just don't want to pay for it, but I'm not big on arcade style games in general, so it being "the expensive one" is kind of OK in my book. Metal Slug and a a few other games might be nice to have, but I just don't find the library super appealing. I'm not big into fighting games either which I know there are quite a few of on the thing. I just don't think it's for me and that's fine, especially at that higher price point compared to other consoles. If some one gave me one I wouldn't complain, but nah I'll pass otherwise.

I think that was the intent behind the Neo Geo X - unfortunately the hardware and emulation wasn't well implemented. The joysticks were fantastic though!

I think the main issues on emulation are the transparency effects and some of the flickering. This is due to the games running at 60hz(via emulation) instead of the original 59.2 hz approx. Beyond this, emulation is pretty good. I believe this has been fixed by now, but it doesn’t bother me much. You can even up the clock speed to 150-200% to fix slowdown in metal slug 2 as an example. Yes I know this is blasphemous to some purists.

You adjusted the price of the console for inflation but not the price of a turn on an arcade machine. So most games were $ .25 or $ .50 which would equate to $ .57 to $1.14 unless you were playing or more popular game like Street Fighter 2 which some operators would charge up to a $1.00. How many times would you play per time you were at the arcade? The Neo Geo did truly save you money!

I had a huge bit in the script where I actually did those calculations. I took it out to make the video shorter 👎 I can’t remember what it turned out to be, but you would have to be at the arcade 4 days a week for over two years, playing at 3 hour spans 🤣

I've got an AES with ten of the cheaper games, to me the console feels like the cheap option though, very plastic compared to the MVS stuff. My MVS collection on the other hand, that is the real deal. Fun video. :)

Those were different times. These days it's not unusual to see people rocking multiple systems. Back then I never saw that. You owned one console and that's the console you defended with your life. I can only speak about my own area, but who owned what also seems to tilt heavily region to region. My area was NES then later Snes and that's basically what everyone I knew in my area also owned. Master System was incredibly rare to see and the only Genesis owners we knew about were things like an older sister of a friend who had one. No one in my circle knew someone with a Neo Geo or Turbografx locally. We were all poor kids though and new games were strictly Christmas or Birthdays. It wasn't unusual to see friends get a single game and that game was a group buy. I used to look at the Neo Geo AES at the local Toys R US. It just sat there behind the class completely out of reach. The price was so high that it really wasn't an item you hoped for because there was simply no way that was happening. I do wonder what kind of mindset those original Neo Geo owners had though. My experience with them online when things got into the N64 and beyond era was pretty negative. They all seemed like incredibly snobby jerks. Very elitist that they had that hardware with a lot of gatekeeping.
