Episode 155 - This is it! The most powerful system ever created in the history of time!! At least that's what Chad the mighty Game Lord at SNK would have you believe. Correspondence with him back in the day as well as SNK's ads are what prompted the 'tude of this episode.

@@silverhawk661 My friends and even my cousin all fabricated stories of owning one!!! But only I knew the truth. The system was over 1200 dollars to own, and games ran for 600 dollars each!!! When ever I heard their stories, I challenged it every time. They were all liars. Truly a console of myth and legend!!! I miss those days.

Don't even bother with the AES...speaking as a former owner, you should totally go with an MVS if you decide you must go one way or the other. The biggest issue I have with the home carts is you're limited to a 4-credit setup upon startup or until game over. Gets to be a real pain in the ass when you're playing harder games (like the Metal Slug series) or games with friends, and that isn't even getting into the prices!
@sega32xxx14

They mentioned renting the helicopter game Joe covered, I believe it was the first game he covered. The only problem is I only ever saw one store EVER have Neo Geo games for rent! It was a random Mom&Poop style place on Long Beach Island here in New Jersey, and they only had 8 AES games available for rent, and 12 NGCD games, 2 of the AES games were Metal Slugs, and 2 were King of Fighters games. I'll always remember this because I saw these huge cases on the shelf with only one rented out, and asked the guy behind the counter what they were, and he yelled "They're Neo Geo games Bud!! A bunch of kids here on the island own them, and asked us to carry them, we got the CD games first, and they were apparently the wrong kind, it took almost a year to recoup the cost of those bricks". This was back in the summer of 1996, and I was just there looking for a SNES game to rent, which they had TONS of, and a VHS or two. Looking back I always think how cool it was for them to have gone out of their way to carry NG AES games to rent for kids there, I could see perhaps carrying games for the CD unit if enough demand was there, but those expensive ass AES cartridges? They had to have gotten the idea that the system was gonna be one of the next big things in gaming, and after getting those first 8, realized it was some niche rich person thing so they cut it off there. I wonder what happened to the games they had, if they sold em off in store before inevitably going out of business like every rental store, or if they sold them privately on EBay or something like that. Either way, they HAD to be one of only a handful of places to ever carry at least AES games, if not both them and the Neo Geo CD games as well. They were clearly some cool people, cause they also had really good SNES games like Aero Fighters, and Hagane which was the only time I ever actually played the cartridges of either of those games, and they had really good Genesis games too. Miss that place.

Wow, I'm amazed they got them that late into the system's lifespan. As cool as it was to own one, in all honesty the best games of the SNES absolutely dwarf the best of the Neo. Give me classic Super Mario Kart alone over any of the Metal Slugs/fighting games. Fatal Fury Special was amazing, but even then most of the games received arcade-perfect/enhanced ports, like the PS2 anthologies.

+greenskiis I totally agree, you're a fucking awesome person. There is so much more varied fun to be had on the SNES than there is to be had on the AES and MVS, which I have emulated for years on a Frankensteined cabinet my brother built. But my first console before I got big into the Sega 32x/Genesis, and later the Saturn, Dreamcast, and lastly the original XBox, that was my own and not my Dads NES, was indeed the SNES. I built up a library of Almost 200 games buying them SO cheap in the early 2000s and there is just so much damn fun to be had on that system! The Neo Geos are great for what they are and all, especially if you're big into fighting games, which I do admittedly love, but the variety on the platform is just unfortunately not there...

As being in a family that ran arcades, the main reason why the home games were 'nearly' identical to the arcade counterparts was because they were in fact the same ROM. Internal dip switches in the arcade or home console let the arcade board/cartridge function on it's respective setups. The few games that appeared somewhat different a few of the fighting games, samurai showdown and some of the KOF games. When detecting the game was being run on a home system, some, censorship appared. Such as blood turned to white sweat in Samurai Showdown and Mai loosing some of her... bouncing assets. Yeah, the fact the cart was basically an arcade board that contained many hardware assets was a reason the carts were sooooo expensive. They didn't need to deal with image compression to fit image data from tiny 2, 4, or even 16 meg ROM to video RAM. Each cart just crammed a crap ton of ROM and let the video handler go nuts with it.

You are right, many peolple think that Neo-Geo MVS and Neo-Geo AES use different roms, but the real thing is what you said, they use the same rom. It's the system (AES or MVS) that change the game into arcade or console version when it's loaded.

I'm one of the idiots who bought my aes in the 90s. It was a wet dream in the early 90s when I was in high school. I've had it forever and love it to this day. Spent a stupid amount of money on it and have amassed nearly 80 games for it. Second favorite system, that title still belongs to the Sega Saturn. What nobody tells you is that these cartridges get heavy quick. I've moved several times since 1998 and have back problems from schlepping these games around. They're awesome. Good pain.

The Neo Geo had a VERY unusual architecture for its time. It was a 16-bit system but it didn't use backgrounds or tiles at all. EVERYTHING is a sprite, and it is virtually unlimited in what it can do with them (to the extent that it's easy to make background layers out of sprites). This is why it did parallax, background zooming, and scaling so well. It wasn't possible to do the kinds of stuff that it could do on a regular home console until the Saturn came out. It took 32-bit systems to match it. Of course, today you can easily emulate it, even on the Switch...but it was damn impressive in its time.

I asked the clerk at my local Goodwill, "Which way to the Neo Geo AES section my good sir?"... Unfortunately he thought I was talking about the MVS, and their selection of both was somewhat limited. I had to wade through a sea of Magical Chase TurboChips and TurboDuo systems to get there, along with the typical Sharp X68000 stuff you'd expect to find at any Goodwill in America.

Arcade games at home no half ass versions but I never got to play one to this day

I only recently got an AES with Magician Lord, World Heroes, and Samurai Spirits (also known as Showdown). Unfortunately, as I was rearranging my cables, I accidentally plugged the AES power supply into the Retron 5 and friend both the Retron 5 and the power adapter for my AES. Even worse luck, I didn't notice something was wrong until a minute or two AFTER I plugged it back into my AES. Since the adapter is $90, I have no way of knowing if I fried my AES as well. That was 2 weeks ago. I'm still pretty upset :(. I'm gonna go cry now. Anyway, thanks for the video guys. Love your stuff. Keep up the good work!

Lapsed Neo Geo addict here. First off, loved this episode. You chose some interesting titles, for sure :) I had a SNES back in the day and loved Street Fighter II but when I saw Samurai Shodown it just blew me away. From that moment I knew I had to have one. But then I saw the prices and that was the end of that. However, my prayers were answered (somewhat) when the Neo Geo CD was announced and the games prices were much more respectable (as long as you could put up with the loading times). I didn't care; I got a Neo Geo CD the day they were released in the UK and I loved it. I did eventually move onto an AES. Got it from a store in London and the thing was kept behind a metal cage lol (Electronics Boutique used to have their retro section downstairs, if I remember correctly). Picked up one of the early King of the Fighters game with it (£100) and played the hell out of it. Picked up quite a few games for it via eBay and I'm glad I did; a lot of the games have rocketed up in price. This in turn led me to have a consolized-MVS made (a 1-Slot - yeah, I know, I know!). This meant I could play the Metal Slug games and other expensive titles. Also, there was something awesome about MVS carts. They often came battered and invariable condition but I loved the thought that they had been in some arcade machine and now, here I was, playing them at home :) Seeing this episode brought back so many great memories for me. I want to get my AES/MVS out now because they are still boxed and hopefully working. Some of my favourite games included: Samurai Shodown, Viewpoint, World Heroes, Wind Jammers, Last Resort, Top Hunter, Metal Slug and Fatal Fury Special. I could ramble on for a lot longer, but I won't :) HZ
