My Rover 200vi arrived with a blown head gasket (because of course it did) but today I drove it for the first time. Last time I pulled the head off and today we gave it a new head gasket and put the head back.

That was one brilliant video, James really knows his stuff some really good tips to know! So pleased its running there's no happier feeling after a head gasket... now get some engine flush in there as well, run it on the driveway to temp and then drain and refill again. Once maybe twice may be necessary

A honest man regarding the engine,they were good engines as he said very rev happy and well designed just hgf was only issue on some k series but a redesigned one gave you a well sorted lump. my P reg 1.4Si not been driven for nearly 8 yrs now needs a release bearing on clutch plus a good look underneath but passed its mot back then.but this video just makes me want get back in mine as its bodywork (minus one small rust spot) and interior is spot on less than 60k on clock but use to go like stink !

Good to see this. Well done. "I have not got a bad word to say about this engine." He said it twice. This guy knows his stuff. Great engines in all it various forms. My daily driver an MG ZT-T 1.8T. We have two VVC 1.8 Ks in the family. a 200vi identical to this one and a Rover Metro ( 1.1c bought new in 1993 ) which my son fitted an MGF 1.8 VVC power train .. Immediate pocket rocket. When filling up with fuel, a guy came over and stated "No way is that a 1.1c" He was the BMW driver we had left for dead on the local bypass. He was right of course. Despite all the MEDIA FAKE NEWS, the gaskets on these cars rarely actually fail. Invariably the are first damaged by some other agent, usually over heating following coolant loss.

I did think of you the other day as I left my brother's house - there's a former Chinese takeaway in the village but the family still live at the premises and for the first time I saw their family car - a really fine example of a W123.

My garage door is the same type, it's an electric version and snapped the plastic clips when the door was lowered onto something. It's a bloody nightmare opening the door like that! Great to see the Rover up and running again. Was going to buy one for my son back in 2006 but was tempted by a Renault 5 Monaco 1.7...he loved that car till it eventually died. Peace Charlie 🇬🇧

A 100% success! Whatever happened to the Flushing Oil that oil companies used to produce, it was a lot cheaper than the regular engine oil and cleaned out any muck, water etc. at a fraction of the cost. It went in nice thin and golden, came out 15 minutes running later like thin black treacle. A change or clean of oil filter, refil with the correct oil and Bob's your Uncle.
@furiousdriving
@furiousdriving 2 жыл бұрын
This was the cheapest one in the shop. I think with the advent of very cheap oil it did away with the need for flushing oil. The next fill will have a can of engine flush/cleaner added to get the crud out with it
@T16MGJ
@T16MGJ 2 жыл бұрын
@@furiousdriving Flushed many Rover T, K and O series engines using DIESEL FUEL. Yes fuel. It is very effective particularly with engines with "iffy" or unknown oil maintenance ( or none ) programmes. Noisy tappets/ lifters etc reduced to a nice near silent rustle. Diesel fuel is of course OIL and is very effective in removing that "varnish" which builds up on cam followers and all manner of engine components slowing things down. Do it right and it will clear all the crud and skum which always still lurks harmfully in the engine following a routine oil change. That will soon contaminate your nice new Engine Oil in no time. A real bonus of the Diesel Fuel Flush ( Five Litres should ) is to see the colour of the muck it searches out even after say engine at 2000 rpm idle for fifteen minutes, twenty even better. Compared to the Golden Colour the Diesel Fuel was prior to being used as a flush. One one old MG Montego bought as a donor car I even drove it for about six gentle miles with the Diesel Fuel in it. Following that treatment and fresh 10-40 semi-synthetic Oil in the engine, vast improvement. Noisy tappets/Cam followers now run near silent. Fuel consumption and throttle response much better. Perhaps best of all, that new 10-40 Semi-Synthetic clean and clear on the dipstick up to five hundred miles later. BONUS.

I have had numerous head gasket failures with k series engines. All well serviced engines. Two different Rover 400s, and my current MGF VVC. I did have a Rover 25, and it did not have a head gasket failure. The MGF had a catastrophic head gasket failure as I drove into my driveway 5 years ago. I had the head skimmed, pressure tested, new valve seals, new valves, full multi layer head gasket kit etc. The head gasket has just failed again after very little use! I may get a cheap gasket replacement done, just to sell the car, which is in great condition with lot of upgrades, or just scrap it. K series is a great engine when it works, other wise the achilles heal of Rover Group, from my experience.
