Cracking The Cryptic

Cracking The Cryptic

2 жыл бұрын

Our book is very close to release - thanks to everyone who supported the Kickstarter. If you still need to order it then you can do so here:
www.kickstarter.com/projects/...
Today's puzzle is the third in a sushi (?!) trilogy from Pseudonum. It's approachable, clever and it's called Tobiko. You can give it a try at the link below:
app.crackingthecryptic.com/su...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. In cages, digits must sum to the small clue in the top left corner of the cage. Grey lines are palindromes and must read the same forwards and backwards. Digits cannot repeat on either main diagonal (marked in blue). Cells separated by an X must contain digits summing to 10. Not all Xs are given.
PS If we manage to reach 400,000 subscribers then we'll be releasing a video where Mark and Simon answer community questions! Please email us at crackingthecryptic@gmail.com if you have a good question for them :)

Most fun sudoku Ive dont in a while. Not too hard but just hard enough to be a fun challenge. Love the symetry, and I would rank this pretty high up on my favorites. probably up with Miracle sudokus which I really enjoy, just because they are usually not to hard but also just hard enough its a challenge and I like being minimalistic so that helps. Love the 1 digit because of that. Amazing puzzle, I hope to see more in the future

Great puzzle! Super easy, super fun! Once I got the concept (which only took about 2 minutes), every number just kept falling into place. Only had two small moments towards the end where I had to play "bounce around the grid" using the palindromes and diagonals to eliminate a few possibilities in the corner boxes to get the few critical digits that burst the puzzle wide open to the finish line! Total time about 22 minutes!

Not thankfully though, I prefer it when wrong logic places a digit wrong, and they have to go back and do the logic right. The bent triple he discovers afterwards still allowed me to finish the puzzle without that 5, so I'm not upset.

26:15 Am I missing something placing 5 in row 7 here? If pencil marks are to be believed it could still go in r7c6 here, and don't see anything in the grid at this point that rules it out. Did I miss something or did Simon just mis-scan and luck out that the unearned digit turned out to be right?

Yes, it still had that option. Luckily, that didn’t give him much steam and he still needed to find the y-wing to solve the puzzle the rest of the way.
@Mn0ty

You're right. The solution I found from that point: -Either r7c3 or r9c1 is the secon purple on the diagonal. -If r7c3 is purple it's a 3 and r9c1 is a 2. -Now on box 9 only r7c9 can be a 2, therefore r3c9 is a 4. -But now r3c3 has no value because it sees 3 on r7c3 and a 4 on r3c9. -So r9c1 was the purple. From here, it is easy to solve.
@AREmrys
@AREmrys 2 жыл бұрын
I think what we can use here is the logic of symmetry. The whole grid follows a strictly rotational symmetrical pattern, as there is nothing to break it. 5 as the digit in the centre has therefore to be placed in a rotational pattern around the centre, which forces it into the cell Simon placed it in and not into the other. But I doubt that that was his logic at that point.

The palindrome line from box 9 to box 6 also disambiguates the almost deadly pattern of 37s. Besides that in the first colouring stage to find the 10 pairs. When it's clear box 4 has purple, green, and orange, and box 6 has green, orange and blue, the blue pair must have the 6. Besides that, I'm pretty thankful to have learned about bent triples on the channel before and also found it.

EDIT: Solved it, took me an hour and 10, but i restarted twice after making some mistakes at the start so the real time is more around 1:30-1:40. Great opening section with some great logic but then i got stuck for about 30 minutes trying to spot something sudoku related, i ended up doing a complicated run to prove a square could only be 2 (i'm ashamed to say it was very close to bifurcation bu i still claim it was a logical deduction).

I have a suggestion for Sven for the software you use: Variant colors, ie. the ability to mark one cell "dark" (which would shade the color in it the same color, but a darker tint.) Would make coloring these kinds of puzzles WAY easier. You could still have a "green domino", but you could mark the other end "dark".

Placed 5 for row 7 in box 7 when it could also go in box 8. Lucky oversight.

I started watching CTC in the ages of thermo sudokus then chess sudokus, where the “miracle sudoku” truly fascinated me then we have the “hardest sudoku variant” Skyscraper, and x sums Kropki and XV are absolute classic And boom here comes the Ring And then Set theory really pushed the boundaries of being the real boss of sudokus. After all these years Arrow sudoku are the hardest

Remarkably easy, I solved this as fast as any of the GAS puzzles from Mark's video on those before this. (I did fairly poorly on them!) 29:24, starting by noting that the 7 and 6 had to be the ones to oppose each other in column 5's X-sums.

62:16 It's approachable...ish, dunno, I feel it was on the harder side of approachable, if that make sense (for a beginner). Still very, very good and quite enjoyable ( and colorful 😆) Ok, looking at Simon solving it, maybe I faced it in the wrong way (I focused on single cell instead of "pairs")... well, I'll do better next time 😅

At around 24:00 when you're looking for things to do - you can actually fill in every 2 in the grid. 2s are restricted to one of two places in boxes 3, 7, and 9, and they all interact so there's really only two permutations for 2s. One of the two possible patterns (with 2s in R9C1, R7C9, and R2C7) leaves you with zero valid spots to place a 2 in box 1, so that isn't correct.

Small (irrelevant) point, but since the sudoku coordinate system counts *down* along the y-axis (row 1 at top, etc), the slope of the "backslash" diagonal would actually be *positive*, not negative 😜.

I'm quite proud of myself tonight, it's nearly 3 a.m. and this is the closest my time has ever been to Simon's on a Sudoku, only taking 5 to 10 minutes longer! Usually I'm at least double.

27:58 for me. I got the break-in almost immediately but it was of course totally telegraphed. I continued with domino sudoku which Simon seems to have missed. A domino can be placed in boxes 2 and 8 by sudoku which then disambiguates the 12/89 dominoes because of the given 1. I pencil-marked the diagonals early on which was very helpful. I never needed the Y-wing. Rather proud of myself. I think my solve was significantly more efficient than Simon's. I learned such a heap of tools on CtC...

At 23ish, I really hope he notices that r5c6 is the same digit as r4c1, r2c2, and r1c9, because they all see r4c6 (or are a palindrome from it), and that therefore that digit is also r3c4.

14:30 solved for me. For this kind of puzzle I think it easier to just remove the color when its no longer needed. No Y-Wing needed I think. 2 in Row 3 can only be in R7C3.

But that's probably because of Simon mistake, the way I solved it is removing 2 from R3C1, because there will be no place for 2 in one of the other box.

25:03 ... funny thing was, I *knew* the solution about 5 minutes before I actually figured it out, as I saw fairly early on that the solution had 180-degree symmetry; *this* time, I wanted to find a logical path that didn't use that; I was able to find such a path, though some moments were more chain-y that I would like. Fun puzzle!

I am such an idiot. I spent like 40 minute playing with colors trying to figure out how I could POSSIBLY disambiguate any of them as 1/2/3/4 or 6/7/8/9 and thinking the puzzle had a myriad of solutions. I pressed play on the video to see how the 1 disambiguated the colors in a way I couldnt find, and immediately saw Simon put the 123 into the 6 cage, and then I realized I didn't realize there were cage totals, because my coloring had covered them up. It solved within about 5 minutes after that fact. *sigh*
