This generation of music is one reason. Music has lost its way. People have forgotten what true talent and beauty sounds like. Glad we still have Ashcroft and a few others.

Even Noel wouldn’t say he’s a better songwriter than Ashcroft. Back in the day, Noel had a lot of admiration for Richard Ashcroft. In one way it’s a shame that The Verve aren’t more widely known but then I don’t know if Richard Ashcroft would want it like that. Don’t think he liked the fame etc

This may be the most depressing song ever. Listen closely to the lyrics and what he means. That life is pointless and not worth living... Add the fact that RA's voice is so powerful and you can hear the pain, sorrow and genius all in one song. Top stuff!
@MXmiao6 жыл бұрын
Yes. So deeply depressing, and yet so important as a human to at least contemplate the reality of life from this angle. Although I'm a happy and grateful young person, this song really spoke to me of the darker part of existence, and helped me grow up in that way, as I'm sure it did for many others. The last few lines are especially telling and relatable - after all the "you come in on your own and leave on your own, forget the lovers you've known and your friends on the road", we finally get - "lies... got to get rid of this hole inside", repeated until the ending silence. However resigned we may become to our loneliness, in the very end we will yearn painfully, desperately, for connection with others to save us from the bare, lonely meaninglessness of 'real life' on some level. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, one love

Loneiness, pain , alienation, regret, guilt, desperation and numbness are real human emotions. There's a story behind them..a reason. Always remember you're loved. Reach out to Jesus. You have a reason, a purpose. Give it all to him. "Whenever you feel unloved, unimportant or insecure, remember to whom you belong" Ephesians 2:19-22 "Therefore I say to you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it and it will be yours" Mark 11: 24

(The) Verve were to 1994/5 what the Doors, Love and Velvet Underground were to 1966/7. They all were definitely part of a wider scene but also so obviously distinct from it. Great music and great bands during those early to mid 90s times but no one sounded like the Verve or had the same degree of poetic soulfulness apart from I guess Spiritualized. Ashcroft and Jason Pierce are just made different, true soul legends in my opinion producing amazing art with their bands
