Van Halen debut album dropped and that killed off Disco, substandard rock n roll and every poser who were trying to fool everyone by acting like they new how to play guitar. Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoads were definitely the two big gunslingers on the scene at the time that Vinnie Vincent came into KI$$. To be fair though, although Randy did name Eddie as an influence and proudly played a small piece of "Eruption" in his solo set with Ozzy, they were two completely different players. Randy really mixed a lot of the classical modes into metal, and Ed, although a master technician, still drew his style from the blues. Put it this way: they were both great, IMO.

Asking whether EVH was an influence on "the scene" (4:57) ...? HA! I can tell you , Van Halen launched a million guitar players. BY 1980, his influence in modern guitar was far more evident than someone like Clapton - at THAT time. If you consider the first VH album was early 1978, and just 2 short years later guys are doing tapping etc. Think about all the teenagers in the late 70's who picked up guitar because of VAN Halen. These were the guys starting out in bands by 1986 etc. - the Hair Bands . All those guys were huge VH fans and "disciples" . Once MTV came on the scene , and the music video was a major marketing tool: bands were coming out the woodwork to try to capture that "X Factor" that Van Halen had. Many imitators, but no duplicators.

You can compare players all the live long day and say who is better than who and blah, blah, blah. The point of EVH is that he (by himself) reinvented, and reinvigorated how guitar rock was played and perceived. He totally turned the blues rock playing upside down. Now, Randy was a different animal altogether. Randy was the guy who introduced that neo classical sound and integrated it into guitar rock. While Randy’s playing was very polished and smooth, it did follow the “rules” if you will, of classical framing , While Eddie’s playing was sort of all over the place with strange sort of half bends, oddball tunings, (probably to make it easier on Dave) and just very unorthodox, outside the box framework. Eddie also was an innovator, coming up with wax coating pickups, using a variac to “power soak” his amp and inventing what is now known as the “brown sound”

VH was so important for rock in 1978 when everything was soft and bloated. I was only 10 but remember that time of Foreigner, Boston, F Mac, etc, and rock needed a kick. In 78/79' I bought TP Torpeados, both Police albums and Steve Millers greatest hits. I also bought all 4 of those Kiss individual albums. Kiss was like a starter band for boys becoming rockers in the mid-late 70s, where Zep was more for older kids, and IMO 1970's Rush is musical talent that's just off the charts, however I never bought a Rush album after Moving Pictures 1981.

We’d be crazy to give those guys a helping hand, they will probably be selling more records than us in a couple of years, why should we risk accelerating that timeline?”

I do remember Paul during other interviews about bands not wanting KISS opening up for them during their beginning run. They had the makeup thing and characters. Plus, great songs and Paul has always been a great frontman himself. Plus, KISS had 3 different guys, during the early days, singing lead vocals on different songs. Later on Ace started sing some lead songs like Shock Me and New York Groove. KISS opened up for Blue Oyster Cult during their first run and Blue Oyster Cult ended up opening for KISS like a year or 2 later. Kind of things like that happen in Music. Guns N Roses came out and it wasn’t long before they became a headliner and were basically kicking every band’s asses on rock scene. Obviously like Paul says in this interview is that they had to adapt to the hairband thing.

I was there for it all. Eddie upped the ante for a lot of guitarists. The Gunslinger was in full effect at the time. I got wrapped up in it like many others. I would eventually abandon a lot of it and go back to my strengths as a player, but once Shrapnel started up and Malmsteen, Gilbert, McAlpine and all thos rocket ships went into orbit I once again started woodshedding. I am just not a left hand guy. I do it OK and can ape styles, but my influences were pre Eddie. DiMeola and Sanatana were the guys that I was already copping. I ended up being a picker more than a legato guy. To this day I pick 85% of what I do. It is just who I am. Playing covers for 2 decades made me more vesatile no doubt, but in my own little world of my music I am a picker. But the entire Gunslinger thing was fascinating. I bougjt GW and GP magazines every month and the industry was humming with gear like never before or since. I am forever grateful to have been born in the mid 60s. I got to see and be a part of what will be considered the best times to be a musician and music lover. It was an embarassment of riches.

Here's my problem with this interview. I've seen & read interviews with Paul where he mentions Humble Pie, Cream, Led Zeppelin, etc. as influences. It's also what he supposedly looks for in any guitarist that fills Ace's shoes. Yet here, he talks about wanting a hot shot shredder guitarist that doesn't play like Ace, who incidently is accused by the interviewer of copping Page's licks. Paul says Vinnie's style is what the people wanted. He even goes on to say in print that Vinnie could play, but he had nothing to say. Wish Paul would make up his mind.

The songs Exciter was just killer and I think it would have been great in concert. It has a cool riff in the middle that could have been ,made into a really hot jam but that is another story. It is just killer music. KISS maybe not but still great stuff. Just like AC/DC the hew songs sound as good as the old songs and if Bon Scott was alive today he could sing these songs. (A side note AC/DC never had to step out of their lane to stay current) KISS on the other hand I do not think that Ace could play Exciter or A Million To One. Peter is a cool drummer but could he play heavy like Eric Carr or Singer no way. . .

Paul was a "rock star". Eddie is a MUSICIAN. Paul has always seemed to me to have an insecurity toward any of his peer group with more musical talent than him.
@spaceavenger542 жыл бұрын
Eddie's musicianship turned him into a Rockstar real fast. Unlike Paul, despite being an asshole to people at times, Eddie was able to maintain both his musianship and rock star status till he died
