I get so much hate for converting tractors to electronic ignition. Not sure why people think a points setup is so much better than a solid state modeulenthat rarely goes out. Good work Stan!

Used to be a old electronics wizard locally who seemed to be able to convert anything to a gm module and coil , he's been gone 20 years and I wish I had paid more attention

I am rebuilding a Lincwelder 225 and it has one of those points plungers and is on a tower. I am so happy I found your video. It's not easy to find videos on specific Onan engines that are connected to Welders. Oh no I will be sear Ching for an electronic ignition for these engines. If and when I find an ignition like the one you used I will let you know .

Lookup Pertronix for the actual module, you may be able to adapt it in similar to mine.

@@ShadonHKW I found one but I do not have the extra money at the moment. It is on a welder that I am going to sell however I am rebuilding it to go on a welding trailer with a gas air compressor, Job box, drill press, and a vise along with a crane to get the equipment on and off and to help with the equipment to be welded as well. Thank you.

Just the kind of thing i was looking for, thinking about converting my 5.0 CCK, which has the same points setup. Looks like the minnesota power parts website is down, can you share which petronix ignition module (part number) they used so I can try to find that? I don't see any 2-cyl lobe sensing units on their website..

Are you concerned that the pushrod of the kit looks a bit hard? Original follower looked to have a bronze head riding on the steel cam, now it looks like you have steel on steel.
@ShadonHKW5 жыл бұрын
The bronze was just a guide bushing, It gets splash oiled from the crank case, not too worried.
@MedicatedOMO4 жыл бұрын
That rod is as hard as the cam it sits on. And oiled constantly. Perfect match.

Great video! I'm still trying to figure out where the starter is located on these generators.

in the back behind the coil
@MatthewBerginGarage11 ай бұрын
On my 6.5 the starter is the 12 volt DC exciter generator on the main generator rotor. It is run as a motor driven by the battery to start and switches to exciter when the engine fires. When the engine starts the increase in RPM enables the exciter to start generating and the rise in the exciters output voltage drops out the starter circuit.

If you still have the generator --could you do a 4 year up date as to how well it has worked?
@ronalddaub50494 жыл бұрын
I don't know where you got you have to clean points every couple of days unless you got a bad condenser points usually last for years anyway it's nice to have electronic ignition but there's nothing wrong with a good set of points in a good condenser they will run forever
@MedicatedOMO4 жыл бұрын
Remove the plating and what's underneath erodes quickly. Use a solvent and never file unless you have to. Filing destroys longevity.
@outinthesticks81763 жыл бұрын
Been years since I changed points , old ones had thick tungsten contacts , could file them half a dozen time's we used to tie knots in the wire to increase the capacity. Los of time's point arcing is caused by contamination on the contacts ,point lube,finger grease,grit from sandpaper used instead of a file , rain etc

Thanks for the 'Guinea Pig' change out on the Onan. Now that I know it works I might give them a shout and get one for my Onan. Had it for years, use it once in a while on remote work. Have always kept spare ignition sets on hand when it acts up. What is the kit worth?? Cheers/greg

From the thumbnail and title I first thought it was going to be one of those automatic grease caps. (They use electrolysis of urea or ammonia to generate pressure and inject the grease)
