Onboard: Having Fun with Porsche 718 Cayman 2.0 Manual @ Moscow Raceway (see the description)

🇬🇧I’ve been abusing press cars at Moscow Raceway for years, so no need to push my own with standard brakes there ☺️ I took it out to the track for the purpose of exploring the balance of the chassis. Had a great fun without high speeds and hard breaking😇 The car is running on the stock Pirelli P Zeros N1 R18 and they are not as bad as I thought.

Thanks Forever Manual for sharing about the base Cayman on your channel. I have made a deposit to buy a 2021 Cayman GTS 4.0 PDK when it arrives at the dealer (canceled order by another customer) - BUT I have been rethinking that model, because as I also truly appreciate the purist idea of the Base Cayman. Either one would be a year round daily driver (for a 60 year old retired guy in Kansas with some snow, who appreciates keeping things simple with no flash, and who doesn't need to win any races). The GTS coming in is loaded, but as I subsequently played around with configuring a base Cayman I realized that the standard features are mostly the same except engine, and I could be happy with few options -- IF the engine / acceleration isn't TOO flat. I would possibly go with the manual gearbox with the 2 liter. The money isn't a factor (for sure I could do something else with the $40+k, but ultimately I want to get the right car for me). So my question for you having owned the base model, would you get it again if you could get a 4L 6CYL instead, assuming everything else being equal? Thanks!

Dear Mark! I’m about to start making a new episode about the driving experience and your question correlates well with it. I don’t want to give away all my thoughts here😇 Let me put it this way. There’s no simple answer to this question because both cars have their unique advantages. Yes, 2.0 car has its strength and it is even better than 4.0 in some very particular respects but the advantages of the 4.0 GTS are more obvious. You don’t have to explain the choice of 4.0 to start with😉 On the other hand you don’t owe an explanation to anyone when you are 60, do you? So if you look for a bare to bone experience there is, and a 0-60 acceleration is off the table, than 2.0 can be a great partner. Makes sense?

Я-то думаю, чего это за прогулочный стиль, а оказывается, что так и задумано :) Вот только можно ехать быстрее и не нагружая тормоза. Другое дело, что нужно уметь тонко работать с резиной.

Thanks for the post. I'm contemplating the same car. You mentioned you didn't want to brake hard, are you at all concerned about the stock pads and fluid for track use?

We have examples of people driving on Nürburgring at the 911 Turbo pace with a stock fluid, but the pads do need your attention if you’re about to go faster than me on this video :)

That’s the problem with watching all these PDK reviews filmed on open roads. It’s not that bad in a busy city actually. Plus the manual box partially compensates the lack of power by getting you more engaged. I don’t agree entirely that the engine itself isn’t responsive because of having zero problems heel-n-toeing it. Can’t wait to compare my car with 4.0 playing as daily.
