The mental strength to keep going is incredible. I was (re) watching the video from several years back when Lewis Hamilton was sailing with Alex on a previous Hugo Boss boat Got me thinking - "Lewis - we've got a problem with the car - we're going to need you to climb onto the nose of the car and do some repairs, while still racing. Don't worry - we'll talk you through it"...

From Lisbon, Alex, where you have a lot of people pulling for you, like thousands others all over the world, who admire your extraordinary skills, not only as a navigator, but above all, as an unusual sportsman, with a resilience capacity, that make you an example (for the youngest, but also for older people) able to overcome the greatest adversities. Good and fair winds for you and the rest of the Vendée Globe fleet. "You never throwing in the towel".

There are many “wins” available in an epic such as this, much more than the overall title. This demonstration of indomitable character speaks volumes of the man at hand and the nature of every competitor. Be safe, your inspiration is greatly appreciated.

Incredible to see and follow along with this challenge ! It’s the double challenge for Alex, as he is apparently left to become a mechanical engineer simultaneously to being a world class sailor ! His humanity is clear throughout - all who are watching this #VendeeGlobe2020 closely cannot help but feel the struggle to see if this boat will make it through ... all that time and money and apparently some real structural issues . Almost seems impossible .. but after this race, it will be the next chapter for Alex and his team : to try and work on a boat less vulnerable and constructed in some way that can both ‘fly’ at top speeds without so many problems... #AllezAlex #HugoBoss

Forget the others, Alex you have won this race already. Truly unbelievable feat to stay positive and get that job done. The camera makes it look so calm up there but the bow of a boat is never calm going upwind! And now you have to get back in to race mode! And no psychologist onboard!

Loving your work Alex keep on going we’re all rooting for you. Shore team, he should be predrilling all work it’s far easier and far safer I’m sure he has a marker pen onboard . I’ve worked on site my entire life and working freehand is harder and risks injury, he is in a confined space which is constantly moving. He’s miles from help, this is not a sprint but a marathon, if he slips with a drill? Come on guys, everything fits on a computer screen and is easy but practical work is a skill which computers or universities don’t teach. For the time it saves it’s not worth it, the job is less accurate and with the loads your dealing with it makes sense to do it once do it right.

I'm sure many of us watching this have spent hours upside down, taking the skin off knuckles in impossibly small, hot, bumpy compartments, whilst at sea, but to do this for several days, on your own - and video yourself doing it, whilst still trying to keep racing, requires some real self-motivation.

Just looked at the weather forecast for tracking around the high pressure system, it does seem you may be able to gain miles in the next few days on the leader. Considering your situation ensuring Hugo Boss travels safely you have set yourself up in the perfect position to fly East. I am so impressed with your resolve not to give up and bounce back into fixing the boat. You have worked so hard to stay focused, you really deserve to win this race or at least be on the podium. Wouldn’t it be great if you and Sam Davies catch Apivia and give Charlie Dalin a close race across the Southern Ocean.
