THE USE OF ABORIGINAL CULTURAL TRADITIONS IN ART - Assoc. Prof. Lynette Riley
ABSTRACT: This presentation will provide brief history of what has contributed to the diminishment of Aboriginal cultural practice and what the current revitalisation of traditional practices means. I will explore the question of how this assists the Arts Curriculum from my own perspective as an artist. I will use the example of making Kangaroo Cloaks and the ways in which Aboriginal cultural traditions can be used. Earlier last year I gave a presentation to some Masters in Education students on Aboriginal community engagement about understanding the impact of Government policy on cultural transmission, and used my cloaks as an example. A question was given to me by a student in the auditorium “But I don’t understand, how will this help me in my teaching”. I think it deserves an answer.
