From 2007-2016, there was a 55 tournament stretch that is one of the most dominant decades of performance by any athlete in any sport EVER. Hakuho sat out one (1) of those tournaments due to injury, and was champion or runner-up in all but TWO of the remaining tournaments (36 titles and 16 runner-up performances). Imagine Serena Williams playing in all but one major for 14 consecutive years, making the finals in 52 of those tournaments, and winning 36 of them (for the record, Serena only has 23 major titles in her entire career). Now imagine her doing it in a sport that's 10x harder on the body. Hakuho is genuinely one of the greatest athletes of the past century, across all sports, and possibly one of the greatest athletes in all of human history. He shattered EVERY record in pro sumo, and his dominance over the sport is absolutely jaw-dropping.

@@Gosankyo Karelin is absolutely up there in the goat discussion, as are Michael Phelps, Katie Ledecky, and Usain Bolt. I think the thing that makes Hakuho stand out is how hard the sport is on the human body and how difficult it is to win consistently.

The fk you talking about? I love Hakuho, 100% GOAT of SUMO no doubt! but Lots of athletes retired undefeated. Thats a 100% win rate. dont give me that bull crap oh he has thousands of wins. well thats because you cant fight 60 times a year in combat sports like boxing and MMA. Vasiliy Lomachenko had a 396 wins - 1 loss in his Amateur record. Thats still a higher %. Dont compare a 1 MMA fight 25 minutes to a Single Sumo bout that can go as short as 3 second to a minute. His 63 record of winstreak is only 2nd to sumo's 69. Thats overshadowed even inboxing with Jimmy Wilde - 93 Julio Cesar Chavez - 89 Packey McFarland - 70 and thats their entire career never losing a fight. 100% Win rate Hakuho has something like 1200 wins, around 200-300 losses. Look, I dont wanna argue, Hakuho GOAT, just dont spout crap like that. Its disrespectful to other sports.
@gabe9125

@@asasipogi You answered your own query without even realizing it. Sumo is a sport where it's VERY difficult to win consistently. Sumo bouts are extremely easy to lose. If you overcommit, hesitate, slip, or your opponent surprises you, the whole match is usually over in half a second. Most dai-Yokozuna (a Yokozuna with at least 10 career championships) have a career record in the .700 range. Harumafuji had a win percentage of 65%. Akebono 74%. Even Chiyonofuji, who's in contention with Hakuho for GOAT status, only had a 71%. Hakuho meanwhile had 83%, a full 12% higher than the next person in line for the GOAT. You're comparing very different sports. It's like saying that great NFL quarterbacks are better athletes than great MLB batters because the former average 65% completion rate while the latter average 0.350 batting average. It's not comperable at all.

@@asasipogi The amount of padding in boxing, it’s far easier to go undefeated than in sports like MMA & Sumo. In MMA & boxing, especially at the pro level, the fighters choose when they want to fight. Not so in Sumo. Rikishi wrestle injured far more often than boxers & mixed martial artists. Most sumo bouts are pedal to the metal from the jump. And that jump is two 300-400lb guys getting off the line as quick as Olympic sprinters or NFL linemen (only in the case of the latter, without pads & helmets to cushion the blow; no, fat doesn’t do the same job). We’re getting into crash test dummy kinds of forces & they do that up to 90 times a year. Unless we forget, overweight guys heal slower & get injured easier than guys that are in shape. Urban Combatives founder Mick Coup once said,”What happens in the first 5 seconds of a MMA fight? Nothing really. But what happens in the first 5 seconds of a street fight? Everything!”. Take the duration into account, the fact the fighters are all shapes & sizes, the hard floor, the bare, unwrapped hands, lack of sure footing, the fall hazard off the dohyo, and Sumo starts to have more in common with a street fight than does boxing or MMA. In boxing or MMA, you can lose focus for a second & get away with it. Guys who do maintain near 100% focus for an entire fight, like Khabib, stand out. In sumo, if you lose focus for an entire second, the match is over, like comparing top level sprinters getting poor starts vs great starts; split second lapses make a massive difference. Fighters gotta stay out of their heads for 15, 25 or 36 minutes. Rikishi have to do it for two weeks at a time. Three words; open weight class. Let’s see how Loma’s record would look if he didn’t have the benefit of fighting guys all his own size. How’d Canelo get on fighting a guy only moderately bigger? Nah man, it’s impossible to go undefeated through an entire sumo career, nigh on impossible to stay undefeated for any meaningful length of time, and ridiculously difficult to have high percentage win rates. Much harder than in boxing or MMA. If there was a combat sport GOAT, Hakuho’s gotta be in the running.

@@skelitonking117 History. Hi Story. Or another way of saying “Tall Tales”. History is a soft science & there’s always a high degree of embellishment & anecdotal evidence, especially when it comes to warriors & hero worship. Braveheart demonstrates it perfectly when the common folk were talking about how Wallace,”Killed 50 men. 50, ‘s’if t’were one!”. Or Canute’s trip to the seaside to tell his people to give their heads a wobble (itself just an anecdote). Even if we were going off earnings, let’s be honest, there’s no accurate way to adjust for inflation between Ancient Roman & modern times. Or even to compare fighter pay. Fun to try, but that’s all it is.

Like so many greats in many disciplines, Hakuho attributed his success on mastering the basic fundamentals. He had the perfect size, athleticism, and mind for the sport but he was so technically sound. His rivals, Asashoryu, and Harumafuji were more dynamic and aggressive but Hakuho being so fundamentally sound, meant that he was incredible at both offense and defense.

That's one of the big reasons why everyone was so afraid of him, he was capable of anything and he was almost always better at it than you were. 8:31 If anyone gets the chance, watch the Tobizaru vs Hakuho fight in full. It's goofy as fuck but well worth the watch.

There are A LOT of things that make Hakuho stand out from every Rikishi ever. But in my opinion it was his ambition to win, his aggression, his strength and especially his technique. He had without a doubt the BEST hip tosses and arm bar throws out of everyone. His ability to quickly change his strategy in the middle of the match also set him apart from everyone. If you read this comment, take notice at 5:40 in the video. The strength shown in that clip is absolutely astounding. To be able to throw a 400lb man in the air like that from a push is seriously unreal. Hakuho is a legend and will be known literally for centuries.

Throwing Kisenosato, Baruto in such a way is incomprehensible yet there it was. Sumo Association's web page still keeps him in their banners even if there is an active Yokozuna. By this I think in spite of association's frowning upon his manners as a Yokozuna, Sumo Nihon Kyokai admits he does not have an equal. Zensho yusho as the final signature was perfect reply to anyone who disputes his manners.

His tachi-ai, or opening attack, was a bit unusual as it was more reactive than most, preferring to see how an opponent responds rather than going full force. He was big and strong, and technically sound enough where he could do that and only very, very rarely get blown off the dohyo.
