Also this is awesome that you are taking my comments and making a video out of it. It makes me feel very special and happy that you can analyze a technique that i saw that stumped me.

Glad to oblige. This is a technically interesting throw. When I brought this up to Derrick and the other guys at the dojo, they all jumped on it. It provided us with a great "skull session."

I also love the detail of tapping the shoulder. Keep up the great content!

Cool. an aikido guy came by our dojo a while back and showed us a throw from his system that is very much like this one. The entry, however, is with a duck under so that Derrick here would turn to the left under the uke's right arm and lay the uke across his back. I have not tried this yet in randori but it seems like it could work.

You're right, I've seen an Aikido throw that has some similarities. Experiment with this throw in practice as this is an interesting throw with a lot of different possibilities. By the way, we will have one more video on this throw be available to watch on April 6. It has some more aspects to this throw that you might find useful. Thanks for your comment!

I would also add that I have seen what has to be a variation of this throw depicted in a German martial arts manual from 1467. Imagine that, eh?
@welcomematstevescott7 жыл бұрын
That is interesting. It's amazing how what we may consider "new" is in reality, the same or similar to what someone did years ago. As the old saying goes; "The more things change, the more they stay the same." What type of martial arts was it? I have some old books on various styles of Cumberland wrestling and Breton wrestling, but I know they are not of German origin.

I have a book on Greek combat sports that depicts a vase painting from 2500 years ago what has to be a taio otoshi variation. In fact this same depiction is identical to the taio variation shown in this same 1467 German manual I mentioned (Hans Talhoffer), and and additional German manual by Auerswald from 1535 and a catch wrestling manual from 1919. The good stuff is old beyond our understanding, and has been passed down from generation to generation. We cannot invent something in combat sports than what those who have gone before us already know.

The book I mentioned in by Hans Talhoffer, translated by Mark Rector, and currently titled "Medieval Combat." You should be able to get it on Amazon. Also there is another medieval wrestling manual that shows many judo like throws by Fabian Auerswald from 1535. If you can find a way to send me your private email I will send you a translation of the Auerswald book.

I attended a refereeing seminar with an olympic referee by the name of Gary Takemoto and I learned all the new rule changes. One thing that I learned is that pistol grips and cat paw or pocket grips are now legal for 3 second. Kind of like the old rules of Kumi Kata but these grips in particular have a limited time of use.
@welcomematstevescott7 жыл бұрын
That is good to know. This means you better get that grip and hit with the throw immediately.

whats the pocket grip

I think Derrick has nice Judo and I like his teaching style. At 0:42 you surmise that this grip would be fine under the new 2017 IJF rules. Fingers inside the sleeve are not allowed but the pistol grip is fine. Steve, would you have any interest coming on my podcast to discuss Freestyle Judo sometime in the future? Please feel free to send me a direct message. I know many listeners of mine would love to hear about your experiences. It's my understanding you wrote the book on Freestyle Judo.

Thanks for the information on the gripping of the sleeves. I will pass along your kind comment about Derrick. He works really hard and is a real student of the game. I would love to discuss Freestyle Judo with you on your podcast and I am the guy who wrote the book WINNING ON THE MAT which covers many aspects of Freestyle Judo. It might be best to simply e-mail me at stevescottjudo@yahoo.com and we can set something up. Thanks again for the information on the IJF rules o the sleeve grip.

thank you soo much but hashimoto are doing another grip can you tell me what it is

You might try our video on what we call Hineri Tsurikomi Goshi. I think Derrick does the other grip Hashimoto uses. Not sure, but I think he does show it on the second half of the video. Thanks for your comment.
@SandriiGupta7 жыл бұрын
Have you played around with an outside sleeve grip? I know in one of those replays he gets it without that inside grip.
@welcomematstevescott7 жыл бұрын
The basic way we do Hineri Nage is pretty much the outside sleeve variation. Look at the video upcoming on April 6 and see if this answers your question.

Is there a way for your other hand ti not to touch beneath the belt?
@welcomematstevescott7 жыл бұрын
An idea might be to continue to rotate so much that your other hand and arm can be used in a whipping motion and not touch the belt. Another possibility is to tuck that arm into your body as you rotate.

I'm not certain that the (inner sleeve) pistol grip is allowed in the new IJF rule set. Cool technique though!
@welcomematstevescott7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. As usual, there is conflicting information coming out about the new rules. I watched the latest videos on the new IJF rules and this seemed to correspond with what was said by some referees I consulted in that it "appears" (as one referee told me to put it in quotes to denote he still really doesn't know for sure) that this grip is permitted. If anyone reading this has some concrete information, we would love to hear more about this.
