I was really hopeful for a description of the Xeno prankster race, expecting something like a snake-based Humanoid based on the statement in the story that Humans had a natural hatred of them from the start, until they fell for the god-tricks. Unless I am really obtuse, a description was never given, other than a love of bad jokes. The first guesses that popped into my head were a snake based (like Yuan-ti) or arachnid race. Or perhaps Giants. I've been a sci-fi fan since I was a kid, and discovered Asimov, Bradbury, Clark, Heinlein, Ellison, etc. I remember an anthology I was reading when I was a lad, with a short story, I believe it was called "Poor Little Flanderaans", though I could be wrong. It was about "first" contact with Humans by a galactic Xeno group, who carefully chose amongst themselves to try to match the new race's biology as best they could, so as to make the Humans more comfortable with first contact. Only, to the Xenos' chagrin, to discover that Humans (The Flanderaans sp?) had a naturally inborn fear of the race selected, which were basically giant sized Humans. It was only then, that the Xenos searched their records, and found that Humans had first contact centuries before, way prior to FTL or even flight, with the same giant sized race. Obviously, the inference is that Humans developed legends of marauding giants in castles who ate people, due to some misadventures of a stranded/disabled Xeno Giant ship in their medieval period. So when the big diplomatic First Contact meet and greet was to occur, instead of a proper ceremony and introduction, the Humans all began to scream and start running away in panic. I'm only guessing on that title, search results yielded all sorts of World War I (Flanders Field) and Simpsons results, I just remember the head of the diplomat corps repeating over and over "Poor little Flanderaans" as he contemplated what a disaster the attempted first contact was, and how unfortunate the whole thing was-with undertones of would he perhaps lose his job. None of this actually relates to the story, just my wanderings and associated thoughts when presented with the possibility (Trope, even?) of inborn racial memories or hatreds. I had similar thoughts recently when I watched a vid series of ASN in which some Humans go to a Xeno Academy, in which the Humans meet a "Dragon" who is enthused with them, and the Dragon-Xeno searched the Human internet and was amazed by how much accurate information the Humans had on Dragons, which puzzled her. Being a series though, I didn't want to break immersion in the story to post a comment at the time. If you've read this far, you're a trooper, thanks for your time, and pardon my rambling.
