Even at my office, all of the employees learned English and have college degrees, yet not many of them have the confidence to write long documents in English. If one is talking about functional literacy like speaking a bit of Greek back in 1st Century Palestine as a fisherman, carpenter or tradesman, it would be just enough to do the job, but no where near the literacy level needed compose any works in the New Testament in Greek.

although the title is misleading: there it says "the world", but they only talk about Palaestine. Nothing about Roman internal politics, the Roman Civil war, the first emperor Augustus, how was the rest of the Greek Roman East, nothing about Egypt post-Cleopatra, nothing about the Parthians, the situation on the Germanic limes, religious and philosophical trends in the Roman Empire ... Even linguistical issues: anyone listening to this might think Aramaic was something like the Jewish language of the day. Actually it was a geographically wide spread language spoken by a whole bunch of people in the whole of the Middle East, in the Roman part as well as in the Parthian part.

Along with those who have called attention to the slaughter in the Middle East, you deserve our thanks for a sobering comment, and thus an existential one, one which cuts through the surface view of even the deepest scholarship. If I were God and wanted humans to know me and have a relationship with me, I wouldn't make one brief appearance to one small group of people in one small area of the planet, not write anything down, but instead leave it to various anonymous writers to tell my story through a collection of literary works that at turns are literal, and allegorical, and sometimes either/or, depending on who is reading it, where they're reading it, and when they're reading it. The God of the Bible is such a crude caricature of the kind of God it would take create an entire universe. Am I the only one who sees that?

Definitely not alone. It is nonsensical. The "it requires faith" cry does nothing to rebut either as there are many many examples in the Bible of people walking and talking with god and just seeing magic happening. Also some of the stories are hundreds or thousands of years apart so it removes even more reason why it couldn't be happening now.

This is a big lie of biblical scholarship. ""At the death of Herod in 4 b.c.e. a rebellion broke out at the site, the so-called War of Varus, which sought to remove Sepphoris from Herodian rule (War, 2:68; Ant., 17:289). The rebellion was supposedly crushed and the city burned, and many of its inhabitants were taken as slaves."" Sepphoris was the capital Galilee for centuries and Nazareth was a suburb of it.

It should be remembered that in 1BC there was not 1 uniform form of Judaism. Firstly it is just wrong to think that all people in Palestine at the time were Jewish. Even for the majority who were Jewish, Palestine was full of sects and cults of all sorts which were all classed as Jews. Much the same as the hundreds (if not thousands) of groups who call themselves Christian today but differ substantially in their beliefs and practices.

Happy holidays to everyone! Just a quick pondering here. Why does it seem as if academics tend to dismiss the role and work of women running households, teaching/raising children, and managing daily lives and matters of their families? That's probably one of the most important roles in society if you think deeply about it. Military and government and paid employment is not all that matters.

The no room at the inn is a mistranslation. In the original greek, the word refers to a sleeping loft of a house above the general living area. It was full, and mary, in labor, would have made it ritually unclean to have the baby there. Thus, Jesus was born in the families ( likely relatives of Joseph) stall, a separate room of the same family home. Animals were kept in the home due to predators and vagrant thievery of the time. The manger Christ was laid in was likely stone lined with straw, and the swaddling clothes are more symbolic than most realize as well. Swaddling clothes weren't for babies, but for newborn lambs to keep their fleece pure, making them acceptable sacrifices for the temple. That's why the shephards knew him by sight, the swaddling clothes. Also, shepherding wasnt a job, but a family job. While the men were away and in smaller families women often cared for the sheep. If the men were away to register or was otherwise not in the fields that night, a woman could have been one of the first to worship Christ.

Thank you for bringing us this interesting and informative interview with Prof. Jodi Magness. It was a delight to hear her. For more than a dozen years I have been buying and enjoying Bart’s courses from The Great Courses organization. Foolishly I assumed Jodi’s courses were covering the same ground. I see now how much I have missed. Jody’s insights as an archaeologist help to illuminate Bart’s insights as a (reformed) minister and religious scholar. Obviously, both are great historians as well, and they bring to their subject a refreshing enthusiasm that is absolutely contagious. My deepest thanks to both Bart and Jodi for helping me, and I assume all of us, to understand the origins of the Judeo-Christian religion. Whenever either of them answers one of Megan’s excellent questions, I sense that I am receiving the distilled benefit of a lifetime of study and reflection.

Could you please be more specific. Were people being genocided during Herod’s time. Back then the Romans came to call a large area Syria-Palestina. Palestina is Latin for Philistines. Perhaps you’re using the word genocide in the way left wing loons use it today. October 7 2023, 6000 Muslims from Gaza and Israel began burning, burning to death, raping, raping to death, beheading, shooting and kidnapping over 1200 Israeli civilians with intent to continue until all Jews were eradicated from their homeland. These murderous primitives had the intention of wiping out Jews: genocide. Israel responded to this event by fighting back, and in so doing have killed around 40000 combatants and non-combatants. Left wing loons and crazed antisemites try to contort this into extensions of their own sense of victimhood, but you might have a different view of this matter. Islam, Muslims, Shiites, Sunnis, left wing loons, right wing antisemites, all have a wish to exterminate Jews entirely. I’m open to being persuaded by good arguments. Tell me about your genocide.

Subsistence living and the practice of leaving the fields fallow every seventh year must have been an explosive mix. The Romans hired farm hands to work on construction projects in the year fields were not worked. Among the constructions of Herod the Great, of particular interest for the gospels is the fortress of Machaerus on the eastern side of the Dead Sea where the Baptist was executed, most likely in 37 CE. The question about educating women and teaching them to read and write is fundamental. However, outside of the rabbinical class and other elites, the question of literacy puts the figure of Paul in much higher relief. Did it require a scribe to write a letter or a gospel? With Jesus and the apostles being Torah worshiping Jews, it has always made sense to me to speak about them as 'Early Christians.' A moniker that also helps to separate the 'Jesus movement' from Romanized Christianity (Constantine in 313 CE; Theodosius in 380 CE). It becomes increasingly difficult to see the Early Christians as not being in direct, political conflict with the Temple caste, the Herodian clan and the Roman order. Were they Josephus's 'Fourth Sect'? Was Judas Iscariot a Sicari? One alternative to the Temple of Jerusalem was the Samaritan temple on mount Gerizim (5th and 2nd centuries BCE). Pilate's massacre there, and the leaders he arrested (and most likely crucified) is also of particular interest in the charged years of the 36 - 37 CE. Was one of those years a Sabbatical when the farm hands were idle? The paring of a messianic figure with a rabbi is particularly interesting. In the first century Josephus pairs Judas the Galilean with Zadok the Pharisee, the two he credits with founding the Zealot movement in the 1st-century. Is this a monicker for the Early Christians? The writers of the Dead Sea Scrolls? The Sicari? Although Josephus is a flawed witness-a Galilean general during the war against Rome (66-70 CE) who turned and became a Flavian-the importance of his writing cannot be ignored. It is contemporary to Paul's letters, and predates the gospels by a century or two. Was the house where the Pentecost was celebrated (Acts 2) near the Mount of Olives? The birth of Jesus is couched in the time of the census of Quirinius, the 'escape' of Judas the Galilean, and a flight to Egypt. Most likely such a flight would proceed along the spice route that led through Petra. Petra was famous for producing frankincense and myrrh. Traditionally part of the gifts presented by the Three Kings/Magi (Matt 2). During the gold rushes of the late 1800s in British Columbia and the Klondike wagon roads were built with inns or 'road houses' spaced 5, 10 and 25 miles apart, comporting to the distance travelled in a day by people walking on foot, and wagons pulled by oxen, mules and horses. Likewise the missions in California, from the Napa Valley to San Diego are spaced 25 miles apart, or one day's walking journey. When the pioneer roads were upgraded in the West, they made possible travel by stage coaches at far greater speeds. In Roman times, only high ranking officials travelled by horse. People walked. Thus the real question about an inn at Bethlehem would center on whether or not Bethlehem was on a principal route. On such roads the chronology of development might well be to build an inn or road house first, before a hamlet established itself around it. The proximity of farms and orchards being another determining fact. In Acts 9, 22, and 26 Paul fell to the ground-no horse is mentioned (though a horse appears in Caravaggio's great altar piece for S. M. del Popolo). Thus, indicating that Paul was possibly travelling on foot.

anyone know if jesus was read to from the torah in hebrew, or an aramaic translation. he seems to understand jewish law, but if he was being taught in hebrew and he didn’t know the language other than thru its similarity to aramaic that seems like something that would be a problem for him ministering or interpreting jewish law.

Jesus could read. In Luke 4, he began his public ministry by reading from the Torah, which would have been in Hebrew, from the Book of Isaiah... “And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up, and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read. And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the scroll and found the place where it was written, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed, To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.” And He closed the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him. And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”” ‭‭Luke‬ ‭4‬:‭16‬-‭21‬ ‭LSB‬‬ bible.com/bible/3345/luk.4.16-21.LSB The expression of doubt by the esteemed scholar as to whether Jesus could read is rather bemusing, based on that NT Scripture alone. Why would she have any doubt at all?

Funny, I always assumed Herod was a title because there were multiple of them. Never even occurred to me it was just some jerk naming all his kids after himself.

I've recently heard from a video by someone who has a Masters Degree in Jewish history that most Jewish men could read Hebrew. This is because Jewish men had to read the Torah. It was a mandate, not an option. In a sense the Jews had a kind of universal education for men even in the centuries before Christ. Whether this extended to Greek speaking Jews living outside of Israel who had a Greek version of the Torah, Idk.
