LOL, I started with 45 minute, ended up using 90 minute. Drywall is about my worst DIY skill but been learning from you during COVID. They call it Easy Sand 90 in Home Depot down here in the States. And thank you for showing me how to clean my gear and keep a bucket of water handy. You're an awesome teacher.

Im FAR from a pro, just renovate a few rentals as I buy them. As an amateur I find if I do 99% of my work with quick set (I use usually 20 min) and the last coat is a super super thin skim layer of all purpose, it seems so much easier for me. I think its because the average DIY person has a hard time keeping the coat even over a wide span, I know I do. A little thin in one area using all purpose may dry and shrink and look like poop compared to a slightly thicker area or visa versa. I think that coupled with the average user cant mix each batch quite as good or when we mix a batch that is the same(using a scoop for mud and a cup for water), we probably dont have the perfect thickness like you pros can get, every time. I enjoy your videos and have used them a TON. The above just seems to be what I have learned. Thanks for the videos!

Help! I have an old 1970’s house in the US and the drywall everyone says is 1/2 inch, it is not. Standard current 1/2 inch is too short, I tired 5/8 inch and it’s too proud. What do you suggest? I have multiple patches from a renter, some are as big a 1 x 2 feet. Do I shim the 1/2 inch up or float over the entire thing. I don’t want it to look terrible and I really don’t want to pay a professional to do it. What do u suggest. All of the spots are on the walls , no ceiling, if that makes a difference. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I love your videos and have even used your recent taping video, dunking the tape in the bucket and it worked like a charm. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos, they really help out a ton!
@vancouvercarpenter
@vancouvercarpenter 6 жыл бұрын
Just use 1/2" and pre-fill the whole area with a coat of mud to bring it up to level before taping if you have the time to let it dry. Shimming is more hassle than its worth. As long as what you are installing winds up under the plane of the existing drywall not above it. Its easier to fill an innie than to hide an outy.

I've done a number of these patches and I can still see the (very faint) outline of the patch in certain lighting or from a certain angle. I can't feel any bump if I rub my hand over the area, though. Is that normal and the best that can be done or am I doing something incorrectly?

If you shine a hard light at a steep angle across the patch after you’ve mudded it, you can see the problem areas you need to address during sanding. A flashlight can work well also to highlight these areas. You might need to build it out a bit farther than you think you need to.

You will need to carve out the spots that will blister. Gently tap on the wall with your finger and where you can hear a hollower sound you will need to gently score the paper and remove the crumbly drywall and loose paper or it will blister. Once you have done that prep work it should just be two coats of all purpose mud to fill it in. You will be able to see any more blisters after the first coat. Be sure to cut them out and fill before painting. Damaged drywall is kind of a pain to repair.

We also move at a pace that is hampered if we try to keep the area spotless. Most of what we do is before install of floors and paint all of which require a cleanup...the best we can do is hide the mess...and who the hell looks inside of their walls and says they are too dirty. lol.
