Kalymnos is a part of the world dear to my heart. The ruin at Εμπορειός that you climbed to on the ridge was an ancient food storage building or a building where trading took place from. There is an amazing ancient fortification behind it in the cliffs there too, it's exceptional, very hidden to most(even many Kalymnians don't know about it). Bon voyage eternal Gabriel. I'm a long time viewer so thank you for all the sharing of adventures.

Yes the fortification (Kastri) is up in the mountain above Emporios quite some distance from the main road. It is an ancient mycenean fortification, as well as food storage. You are right. Only few know about it. Also Skalia nearby is another site where there are mycenean ruins. This region along with Vathi were one of the earliest settled on the island. Ofcourse above that mountain range near Argononta is the Byzantine outpost of Galatiani which over looks the Byzantine castles of Kasteli and Telendos on the other side. It was used as a signaling outpost but it has walls.

Hi Gabriel, What a day of traveling around wonderful sites to see but much of this island is what you mentioned rock climbing it has some very impressive cliffs. After a day of traveling around the island and you've seen what you are going to see it's time to move on and see another island and sometimes you come across something new and different that you didn't expect when travelling. The whole point of traveling is to experience what you might have otherwise not experienced. I'm sure regardless of what you know or read you still come across something new and different. That's why most people travel to find that experience that opens their minds to what is possible and different from their regular environment.

Over 25 years of skippering charter yachts in the Greek Islands I always stop off in Kalymnos, your quick coverage was ok but there is a lot more to see especially in Vathi where there is a beautiful swimming spot further down by jetty where the tourist boats tie up, also back near poppies restaurant if you walk further round you will find a traditional boat building yard and slipway, plus the main citrus fruit grown in Vathi is Oranges. The bay of Emporio we moor here often in our charter yacht and walk about 100 mtr super the road from the jetty, to Harry’s Paradise, exellent food and Harry was a very famous Sponge diver on Kalymnos until his death. But each visit to Kalymnos one discovers more treasures, I could go on but your coverage of the Greek Islands is very good. King Regards Alan INGLIS, GREEK SAILING HOLIDAYS Skipper

Those busts near the beginning were of benefactors to Kalymnos, one in the field of local education, the other in religion. The educator is praised for his high level of education and his commitment to the instruction of the children of the island for more than 25 years. The priest studied theology in Thessaloniki and served the island's spiritual needs for decades. The most interesting thing about Kalymnos is that a lot of these people emigrated to the US and settled in Tarpon Springs, FL, just north of St. Pete. Tarpon Springs has the highest percentage of Greek immigrants of any place in the US. I should add that the Kalyminioi made their living chiefly from sponge fishing and settled in Tarpon Springs because the Gulf of Mexico had sponge beds in that area.

For some reason I suddenly want to watch Mama Mia 1 & 2. Your videos make me feel like I'm in the passenger seat of the car. You said Kalymnos wasn't your favorite. It's interesting how people have such different taste. I just watched a video on the RomeWise channel and her family has been going to Kalymmos and prefer it. But I think that preferance is based on family tradition so maybe that makes them biased. Some travel videos showed spectacular mountain ranges off the coast up north. Out of all the greek islands you've been to which one do you prefer and why? I'm a hiker and walker who loves the beach and lingering at a cafe or tavern --- no night party life for me. That's why I thought Kalymnos might be nice.

Good stuff. Love that you cover so much simply walking & talking. FYI regarding ID of any church in Greece. The church's main icon is the one on display, in this case the first one you capture on camera. As you likely well know, Byzantine icons have a specific set number of themes which typically look very much the same, save for a few minor details. In this case, the church's main icon shows a scene of the Resurrection (Anastasis). There are two main Anastasis scenes in Byzantine iconography: one depicting the Resurrection of Jesus, the other depicting Jesus' resurrection of Adam and Eve from Hades. Here, Jesus is lifting Adam and Eve out of their respective sarcophagi, thus defeating Death. This "Harrowing of Hell," or Descent into the Underworld obviously echoes ancient Greek episodes such as Orpheus' and Hercules' descents into Hades. Cool scene.

@@GabrielTravelerVideos I must have somehow missed the name of the place you stayed. I remember seeing the room itself. By the way, your experience getting to St. Savvas and finding it closed due to Google being wrong is not uncommon. I had this happen to me last year when I was there. I got shooed away by an old lady in black who spoke no English as she was closing the gate. My Greek is bad but was good enough to ask her what's up. She said they close earlier than before and to come back. I have been a few times to St. Savvas so it would not normally have been a big deal, but I wanted to show a family member who came with me. He ended up seeing it the following day though. Big tip for you. DO go back there. The grounds and views from there are stunning. There is a beautiful small church there along with the monastery buildings. Great views of the harbor (Pothia) and more. Worth the trip. Then drive from there to a beach down the road. Kalymnos has REALLY nice people and that is one of the things which make it great. The beaches are, as you point out, not as nice (from the sand standpoint) as ones in nearby Kos, but there is plenty to see. Telendos is nice as well and has ancient Christian burial grounds and stunning views, including a nice cove that most tourists are too lazy or unable to hike to though it is a short distance. There is also an (unofficial) nude beach around the right side as you pull in to the dock from the ferry from Myrties. You have to walk a bit though. I'll be back again this year. It's that good.
@GabrielTravelerVideos2 жыл бұрын
Good to know, sounds like it's worth a revisit to see both Telendos and Pserimos. I might not have included the hotel name, it was the Olympic Hotel.
@georgeklimes76042 жыл бұрын
@@GabrielTravelerVideos Makes sense. Have never stayed there (we prefer a place with a kitchen so we can cook). We stay generally on the other side of the island (near Masouri) to get the views of Telendos, but we did stay just off the main drag by the port the first time we came. It was a townhouse and cost 50 Euros. Had a "full" kitchen, 2 bedrooms upstairs, a full bath upstairs, and a half bath downstairs plus a dining area and a living room with TV. Going up the stairs required me to bend over about halfway up (I am 6'3"), but many older houses were built for natives - who generally were not more than 5'8". The half bath required just bending my head slightly, as the doorway was maybe 6' even. That was 5 years ago. Prices might have changed. . There are some reasonably priced rooms over there which also have those views. The downside is that if you want to go into Pothia, you need to drive or get a cab. The views on that side, however, are awesome.
