Never had a car, cycled to work for the last 15+ years, all year, in all weather, cycled to school, to uni, for groceries, for fun, for leisure, for mischief, for adventure, and almost never thought "this sucks, it would be sooo much better if I had a more expensive bike"... and every time I tried, it ended up being a disappointment rather than improvement. Re Jake's point about building a bike for under 3k, I'll say I've built a damn good bike for that budget. Didn't cost me that much, since I had a bunch of the parts on hand, but $3k is what it's insured at. Soma Fog Cutter frame and fork, hunt four season gravel wheels, Ltwoo R9 2x11 hydraulic mini groupset, Shimano 105 11-34 cassette, Ali Express 50-34 cranks, YBN chain, GP5000 AS TRs, cane creek headset, and a Topeak Super Tourist rear rack because I do use it to commute and run errands. That Ltwoo groupset has treated me really well for the 400mi I've ridden it. I think y'all would be surprised if you got one to play with

Probably a frame that could take 35-40mm tyres and have 2 wheelsets; XPLR wheels for gravel/training/fun and deeper wheels for road. I like the idea of the Pinarello X. Rotor crank set with direct mount chainrings - 46/30, 52/36. With 2 chainsets you could set up a road rear derailleur for 11/34, 11/36.

I own a Halfords Vodoo Bizango (£750) and a Trek Domane (£4.150 but can be found on offer for under £3.000) so I probably fit into the category of bottom scrapers but I honestly don't care as all that counts to me is getting outdoors and getting some miles clocked up, and keep me in health and good shape. I can understand that if you are a pro rider, or a very keen top performing amateur, that you would want as close to the top specs as you can afford and justify but the for rest of us, which is the very large majority, I cannot imagine that the top spec bikes will get us onto the roads more often, or riding an awful lot faster either.

Just did this recently, took redundancy and got a payout. All my bikes where ridden into the ground. Got four bikes. One because I bought one too many, one to go to work on at my new job, a dream bike and a dream winter bike. Ribble Edurance titanium shimano ultegra £4000. Spa Cycles Elan mk 1 shimano 105 steel £1300 (commuter), Spa Cycles Elan Mk 2 titanium Ultegra with hand built wheels £3200, Sabbath Silk Route Titanium tourer from a local bike shop at a bargain £1600. N+1 is now broken for me. £10200. Went out on the Elan TI today, it's like riding on a sheet of glass that bike.
@Mapdec3 күн бұрын

@tonyjennison31993 күн бұрын
@@Mapdec The Sabbath is old tech rim brake but hand built wheels with hope hubs and a cane creek headset, brakes are short pull TRP v's and they will stop you, as responsive as the hydraulics on the other TI's. Bargain and massaged my conscience a little as I bought it from a local bike shop. I keep them in the house. I've been amazed at the quality of the TI frames which I suspect in reality are made by ORA. The Ribble particularly as a triple butted internally routed frame is particularly well made, not that I can find a fault on any of them. Thank you for the reply sir with respect, I learn a lot from your channel.

A $3k bike is 90% as good as a $10k bike. With that being said, I'd have 3 bikes in this situation. I'm building a budget Time ADH 24, I bought the frame on sale at 1700 pound, I just bough a SRAM Red D1 upgrade kit at 900 pound. I already have the wheels (DT Swiss ARC 50). Now searching a 165mm SRAM red crank, just the arm, I have the power meter and chainring already. Also thinking of the handlebar probably will go with some chinese integrated one, like the superlight Avian Canary (240g), without going integrated, as I will probably travel with it. BB Rotor pf4630, Seatpost Elita One (130g) and some 130g saddle. I hope I will like it beter than my ADHX, at that price I could not pass on an ADH. I'm getting the ADH with the FSA headset this time, let see how it compare with the Deda. I'm trying to go as light as I can this time, I don't want an other 8,5kg+ bike like my ADHX. I really don't like this bike much, it's bulky, heavy and so stiff. I'm 58kg as a reference. My goal is to build a climbing bike, I was climbing 5000m per week this summer on the ADHX, I really love it, I just want something more nimble.
@Antoine_Frs2 күн бұрын
Wow, suprisingly close to what I'd do. As an alternative Deda Zero 100 RHM handlebars + Kalloy Uno stem (+ ti bolts) would be 100g heavier, but cheaper, easier to live with and the RHM shape is great. If you're going for TPU inner tubes and not tubeless, have a look at the Veloplugs instead of regular rim tape.
@morneauh2 күн бұрын
@@Antoine_Frs I have the Deda SuperZero RS handlebar on my ADHX, they are not particulary lightweight and with the deda superbox it's quite heavy (400g+ setup). This time I'm going lightweight. I will check the UNO, maybe that would be more flexible for my setup.
@Mapdec2 күн бұрын
The FSA is about the same. I like the look of the gravel one, but the road version looks weird. Enve probably make the best looking solution for a 2 piece. I still think the Deda Alenara is the best looking combo though. Weird to have a beautiful made in EU frame with Ali finishing kit. There is a very good reason western brands are heavier.
@morneauhКүн бұрын
@@Mapdec I can still change my mind on the headset, they haven't shipped the frame yet. Deda is not western brand, it's from Taiwan. You can get the super light stuff, but you need to pay a premium for the deda superleggero. Chinese brand are not segmenting yet.
