Marlon Brando directing himself ! It was done professionally well by him not trying to steal scenes from other actors especially Carl Malden. I personally wish he had directed more films but his legacy as the greatest male actor will reign supreme .

One of my top ten westerns. Beautiful cinematography/scenery, good acting, and a typical revenge movie with a bit of a twist on the part of Rio at the end. Ben Johnson is a hoot as a villain, very scraggly and unkempt, with some memorably funny lines.

This is easily one of the best westerns I have ever seen. And not just a great western but a great movie. Convincing performances by the entire cast; even more than Brando, Karl Malden impressed me. There's only one point that bothered me, the conversations in Spanish that lacked subtitles in English. Maybe the producers never thought their westerns would be watched in India or in places outside the American continents. That did not detract from the movie, however, as the context and the actors' skills made the meaning clear.

Che grande film!!! Con un Marlon Brando del genere, non si può aspettarsene di più. Sembra che il regista l'abbia preparato apposta proprio per lui su misura. E che stupenda storia d'amore!!! Sembra una realtà e non si trattasse di un film. Le sfumature sono di un ottimo soggetto, con un surreale altamente qualificato. Vendette e vendette, ma poi subentra la legge, e poi di nuovo i tradimenti umani che spuntano come le ciliegine sulla torta. Insomma è un film che ti lascia un sospiro da mozzafiato. What a great movie!!! With such a Marlon Brando, one cannot expect more. It seems that the director has prepared it especially for him to measure. And what a beautiful love story!!! It looks like a reality and it wasn't a movie. The nuances are of a very good subject, with a highly skilled surreal. He sold and sold, but then the law takes over, and then again the human treachery that crops up like the icing on the cake. In short, it is a film that leaves you with a breathtaking sigh. Ok, just saw this for the first time 2024. It is, in my opinion one of the best western movies I’ve seen. It literally has everything, sensational scenery, excellent acting, plot, and Brando’s gun-play was exemplary, especially for the 1961 time frame. We didn’t get that level of gun action, until recent times in my opinion. Fun western! Highly recommended 👍

In 1961 my older brother worked at a drive in theater in Oak Cliff Texas. I was 9 years old. One night this movie was on. I was memorized as I watched. I'm glad it's on KZbin. I' hope to watched it again. Carl Malden was a really good bad guy, and ben Johnson played a great "scum sucking pig." Gotta new name for life long politicians. :)

che bel film. Troppo avanti coi tempi. Marlon Brando ha inventato un nuovo genere e nessuno lo ha compreso. Lo chiamarei neorealismo western, ma è molto di più. Scene stupende, moderne, originali. Ambientarlo al mare è stata un'idea geniale. Fotografia stupenda, dialoghi sintetici e raffinati come diamanti. Peccato davvero non sia stato capito.

I liked the movie also because it wasn't rushed and pressured to make it sellable or appealing to majority of popcorn cinema viewers. There's more humanity in it and it shows questionable and contradictory personal/private human thinking and behavior going against its official/public appearance and beliefs. Movie shows human behavior and feelings like lying, anger, hatred, revenge and punishment to be deeply embedded in our human genes shaped by the evolution and give us certain slightly toxic satisfaction when fulfilled even when we r somehow aware they can turn to be totally destructive and do more harm, than good. These deeply human contradictions in general and pursue of goals which can cost us life and much more problems than before can be considered almost our trademark human thinking and behavior😉 Also Brando as director put in this movie pretty intriguing situations like when Rio is saved by Dad 11:50 and then 13:05 Rio tricks Dad to take the ride which could had been in either good or bad intention for example give Dad option to ride as he doesn't have shoes and cannot walk. Also there is option they could ride both and find second horse together, but they rather split and divide, giving more option for betraying each other. After that Rio is tricked/betrayed even harder by Dad and somehow crosses the border of friendship for which Rio who pays 5 years in jail which on the other hand gives Dad chance and path of much better, stable life. This shows what happens when human behavior goes over the limit and beyond what's still acceptable and within the borders. It also confirms that small lies r seed of a bigger lies usually growing out from them and that small dishonesty usually grows into bigger one. Rio continues to lie and trick even after all of that to get what he wants, however this moment 1:01:15 and growing feelings to her start changing him which in comparison to Dad 2:02:58 is key difference showing Rio's character advantage of being capable to admit the truth.

A FACE OCULTA. Um dos melhores filmes de faroeste que assisti, apesar da inexperiência de MARLON BRANDO como diretor, mesmo porque ele não decepciona e surpreende pela bela condução da história. Em alta definição é um verdadeiro presente para nós, cinéfilos.
