@@beumuth No. The way I interpret the situation, Icky is stuck in a downward spiral of self doubt and second guessing himself. He's avoiding making a choice to live or die because he's convinced himself he doesn't deserve to live. Charles is aware of this to some degree and tries to trick Icky into making that choice, but Icky's too deep into his self-doubt to see the game is a thinly veiled pretense to boot him back into reality. So, Charles decides to put the decision and all of its implications in front of Icky, no tricks, no finagling, just blunt, "Do you want to live or die?" I suspect some part of Charles wanted to grab Icky by his clavicles and shout, "Listen up, birdbrain! You are keeping you here with your blasted dithering! Time's up! Do you want the Ick to eat you, or do you want to live another day? Pick! One! NOW!"

@@anthonydezii8493 Yeah. That's the purpose of the game. He's trying to wake Icky out of his stupor. Icky figured that since he ignored a death omen he is fated to die and cannot stop it. Resisting it is pointless so he doesn't fight it. Charles is challenging him at a game to wake up some competitive spirit within him. That's why he says "Oh I won't win", he fully intends to lose. Icky however doesn't see this and doesn't look at the gaps in Charles' defense that would let him score points and win the game. He just cries "what the use" and gives up at the first hurdle. So Charles switches strategies and directly challenges Icky's survival instincts, it takes a heap of a lot to suppress your survival instinct, especially when you feel a genuine, sudden, outside threat imposed upon you. And once Charles touches off that instinct he was able to remove the black.

It’s been super fun diving into everything and retwatching and just falling in love with the chars and story ahhh And yes! I love the usual style, I think it’s amazing, but the visual storytelling of using a vastly different style to show that something is “on a different pane” or otherwise not a part of the “norm” is always cool and No Evil does it so well!!

He does kind of bring it on himself by treating people like expendable pawns. The whole reason he's in this mess is he thought he could use the Black Ick to terrorize McCoy and Hatfield into a peace agreement. The only people inclined to help him as a matter of course are Amaroq and Angel, and Charles proved he was only too happy to toss them aside when it suited him back at the Mercy Bow temple. I think Angel is still rooting for him, and she managed to recruit Kitty into a maternal role in time to prevent things from getting truly FUBAR, but there's only so much she can do. Besides, we're still in the, "You made the mess, you clean it up," stage of his punishment. I suspect that when he transitions from atonement to improvement, there will be more people willing to overtly help him. Whether or not he is capable of accepting that help is a separate question.

@@alexanderleonardi3625 As I recall, and I admit at the outset my memory is far from perfect, Angel adopted Charles when his mother was forced to abandon him because his father was a Hatfield and the mother was McCoy, Amaroq went with Angel and the baby because he was tired of the feud as well. Years later, Charles gets the idea to stop the fighting using the power of the Black Ick to scare both sides into peace talks, and Amaroq went along with it because he either believed it could work or he just didn't possess the tools and methods necessary to talk Charles out of any darned thing (I suspect a mix of both). However, the more damage Charles caused, and the more power he accumulated, the more he began to view the people of both towns as toys he could use as the whim struck him. And if they happened to break, it's not his fault the creator made humans out of such shoddy materials. Amaroq may have planted a base idea in Charles's head at some point, ("I wish something would make Hatfield and McCoy just sit down and talk to each other," or some other innocent turn of phrase) but the bulk of the planning and the actual actions taken to carry it out was all Charles. And now he must lie in the bed he has made.

So the reason Icky didn’t wake up is that he wasn’t sure he wanted to wake up. Charles had to trick him into saying he wanted to wake up which is why Kitty said “Good hustle”, as in good con job. So, which minor was it that they think Corn assaulted? Charles? And it looks like Charles is now the official keeper of the Black Tezcatlipoca, like Kitty, the Red.

I don't think he was tricked. He just needed the willpower. He believed that it was his fault somehow that people were being taken by the Black and that this was his punishment for failing. We hear him initially scolding himself for not studying the contract more when he had the chance, and that there's no chance to any longer. He'd consigned himself to his fate until Charles makes him admit that he didn't want to be there, that he wanted to wake up. Also, saying "good hustle" to someone means you're congratulating them on their hard work. Clearly Icky was harder than the others to clear and that was Kitty's way of praising him.

I love hpw Bart and Ickys situations are reflections of each other others. Ickys earlier frustrations we watched with those around him invalidating his anxieties, coping behavior and frustrations at being exspected to easily solve a problem they could not decipher. Lashing out when he felt alone and like nobody was helping him. Questioning help he was given. Falling into despair with everyone telling him to just "come on out of there." Maybe it's just because I struggle myself daily "recovering" from clinical depression. (Don't feel like it should be called recovering. More like learning how to live and cope with trying to keep on living when you've been damaged into having to do that living in a different less self-sabotaging way.) Bart gets it towards that last bit though. He's gonna help Icky, by first helping himself, to then guide Icky into, well, also helping himself. Which round the table is also how Bart, first really helps himself. Kid did pretty good with his first bout of empathy.

Human Huey, new outfit for Charles, Icky(!), Game, everything was amazing. I’m wondering what the blue signifies, when we got to see inside his head a bit. It seemed to be draining when he was losing his spirit about what was going on. Also shout out to the music, it’s always amazing. Also Icky’s neck reminded me of Brom’s. Edit: Actually, looking at the scene at 4:44 and having looked up the game online briefly, I think Charles is annoyed because, Icky probably could have taken his piece. According to what I read ‘Players capture BEADs by surrounding the opponents BEAD on two sides either horizontally or vertically’. Perspective is a bit difficult, but if Icky moved the piece closest to him one square to his left, he might have been able to capture Charles Priest? Of course I don’t know if that same rule I said applies to Priests if it’s not a regular bead. But assuming it does, Charles is annoyed because Icky has the choice in front of him, but Icky is lamenting saying his fate is sealed without trying. Damn.

Except for the turquoise beads in his head that flow down throughout the bones. As he becomes more despondent, the turquoise tendrils fade bit by bit. His pieces in the game are also turquoise. When he finally realizes he has the ability to wake himself up, it flashes and he is free. I took it as a call back to the turquoise bracelet of protection he gave Kitty in the flash back of episode 31. Kitty gives it to Icky's Mom when they leave Hollow and we can see it on his wrist when they enter into the room at 1:27.

Saw a pretty mean comment about Charles... I will remind everyone that despite all the crap he's done he's still a child. I doubt between Ameroq (who was raised by a village that seemed to abuse and use him) and Angel (someone who I'm not entirely sure understands a human's fear of death or a clear moral compass, likely through no fault of her own) that he would have really learned healthy boundaries and consequences. That's why Kitty forcing him to pay for his mistakes despite him "seeming" to have "learned his lesson" is so good. She's holding him accountable. She's seeing through his tactics. Just my opinion, but I think he can still learn. He's a child, and as a child with way too much power, he's occasionally going to lash out or act up (especially in the face of physical violence, Calamity looked like she was going to hit him and he recoiled in fear and threw a tantrum) But he'll learn. Kitty is a good mom, and she's very responsible!!! Sorry I take this series seriously because I absolutely love it!

Huey's expressions on his human face are remarkably similar. And I don't think that's a super obvious thing to say. One face is that of a coyote and the other a human, yet somehow I knew exactly what kind of face his coyote face was making. You're so damn talented Betsy! I also feel like slowly but surely Charles is learning. I'm starting to feel sad for him... he's just a child and I don't think he really knows what he's doing, despite all the trouble he's caused. At least Kitty is here to learn him somethin'.

By the time the Director had twisted it to say what he wanted to say, and the money Producer had inserted his girlfriend into the production, and the line producer had vetoed anything edgy, it would be awful. Art like this which are just collaborations of artists are magical.

In No Evil: Judgement, Ichabod said he tried to hold the Blue Tezcotlipoca but it repelled him. He said that the Liberation Machete requires strength of will and as we saw here, that is something Ichabod is severely lacking. But maybe that will change in the future?

He saw humanity's issues and decided they could be fixed by a firm hand guiding them, His hand. He and Coyolxauhqui came to blows and started a battle between those who followed them. Seeing what they'd done they sacrificed themselves and became the Tezcatlipoca Mirror.

The animation and story is beautiful as usual, but I haven't seen anyone talk about how good the background music is! The percussion and echoing, repetitive melody in the dream sequence perfectly match and elevate the tone and flow of the scene. Mr. Shoes is doing an amazing job with the sound in these.

I mean, Betsy does both of their voices, but typically Kitty's is higher and Calamity's is deeper. So Kitty in a deeper tone would sound close to Calamity.

(Maybe the kid is happy to see “something going his way”? He seems to act like he’s the victim in this story, despite uhh, all of his actions otherwise)

I love Charles' new duds. The hat is much more flattering than the dunce cap he deserves. But I was really hoping the Black Tezcatlipoca would help our poor lopsided evil child with his appendage count. PS I have so many thoughts, idk whether to leave individual comments for the algorithm or one big one. I hate clogged TLs and FB walls, but this series gives me thoughts and feels like nothing has since I read Moomintroll as a child.

Can...did Iggy lose his legs? We saw that the blue was meant to represent his life, and when we entered the void, we saw the blue recede up to his waist, which I feel implies the loss of mobility. Of course that might not be true, but we didn't see his lower body move when he woke up

Now I already knew this was largely based on / inspired by various myths from around the new world (especially the Aztec and Maya) but stumbling upon a Wikipedia article containing the words “the four gods who created the world, Tezcatlipoca, Quetzalcoatl, Huitzilopochtli and Xipe Totec were referred to respectively as the Black, the White, the Blue and the Red Tezcatlipoca” certainly spoils a few things

I haven't read Brother Swan, but in the Judgement comic it's implied pretty heavily that Calamity is the weilder of the blue. She doesn't try it like everyone else because she was covered with the black ick, BUT she actually manages to stay awake for a little while after coming into contact with it. They comment that it is because she has such a strong will, and a strong will is the desired trait of the liberation machete; just like the judgement scythe desires a responsible hand to weild justice.

@@veggiedragon1000 Yes, and I think the black ick desires peace. People think it is evil, but I think it seeks out no conflict. And if you'll note, that is when Charles uses it the most, when there are warring parties around.

@@philtrubey7480 Exactly, I think that is why the black tezcatlipoka chose him. His stated goal was to stop Hatfield and Mcoy from fighting - he just went about it through fear, which is the wrong way. All of the Tezcatlipokas embody "positive" traits, but they all have their negative sides.

Interesting that Charles is shown to not have full control of the black ick, as least not until the end. When Calamity threatens him, Charles is frightened which causes the crystal fort to be built. It looked like the fort being built was as much of a surprise to Charles as it was to others.
