All super great artist. Michael (king of pop) Marvin and Stevie, for me it's a tie. Prince after them. Marvin died at 44, Michael was 50 Prince 57 Stevie is still here will be 70 in May 2020. Marvin had much more to give he was one of a kind. A mural was hoisetd at an event I recall, Dick Clark was the master of ceremony. A mural of Elvis Presley, John Lennon and Marvin Gaye. Dick Clark made a point of saying that he (Marvin Gaye) belonged up there. His duets with Tammi and others, His years at motown. I heard it through the Grapevine was and is the biggest hit out of Motown. Barry Gordy is on film saying Whats going on is probably the best album and is Smoky Robinsons favorite. He spent days in his studio layering his music singing background and lead. Truly one of the best and arguably the best. Of the four artist I can listen to his music the longest, it's timeless and never grows old.

New Media I know it's subjective, but to me Marvin Gaye vs someone like Michael Jackson (who was a superstar but a minimal musical talent) is like LeBron James vs Shawn Bradley. You could subjectively say that the former is better and nobody could factually disprove you, but it's just ridiculous.

I never was in to michael jackson. In the 70's all my friends were into the jackson 5,but I liked more grown-up music like stevie wonder, sly and the family stone,the beatles and the rolling stones. Songs like ABC sounded childish to me,even thought I was a child. When prince came around he was the whole package. I prefer musicians,song writers,dancers,inventors. And prince is all those things and then some. Michael was a better singer when he was a child. He had more records with the jackson 5,but he did'nt write any of the songs, well maybe he co wrote the song ben,I don't remember. His fans keep saying he played instruments,if he did it wasn't on stage during his concerts. Which makes it easier to do dance moves. Prince dance with and without instruments of all kinds. Guitars,bass, piano and drums. Which makes performing a lot more difficult. I think a lot of people our hang up on the fact that they knew michael as a boy. That's why they've made him a bigger deal then he really is. It was michael people who told mtv to start calling him the king of pop. The one thing I can give him some points for is that in the 80's he knew how to market his image. And to take advantage of the public love for the jackson 5.
@BMOCTV9 жыл бұрын
+Kelly Ellis Not sure about the not writing thing. I knew he wrote more as he got older & had more control over his music. I also wouldn't compare the dance moves from MJ to Prince. I agree that Prince played more instruments on stage but MJ was a better peformer overall in my opinion. Thanks for the comments tho & I respect all opinions! LOL

+Kelly Ellis Sorry but Michael wrote a lot of his songs once he left Motown and yes it's been said that he can play instruments but he prefers singing and entertaining. That was his passion. Plus, Elizabeth was the one who referred Michael as the King of Pop, Rock and Soul, not Michael.
@kbab20089 жыл бұрын
+Davina Taylor Davina. I'm not putting him down. I just think that a lot of his best songs were written by other people. Except for Billie Jean. Which I like a lot. Maybe because it has some of Hall and Oats song in it. Also I remember when MTV started calling him the king of pop,it was every hour on the hour. It got on my last nerve big time. I would have loved to hear Prince and Michael jackson do a song together. But Prince was right to turn down the song Bad,because it is a very bad song. I would have rather they did The Way You Make Me Feel.Now that was a good song.

Timbaland can't go because he produced majority of the records on Aaliyah's OIAM album and Dr. Dre produced and inroduced is to Snoop, Em, 50 Cent, The Game and Kendrick Lamar. Pharrell produced classics off of Usher's 8201 album and he produced other R&B and Hip-Hop classics from the early '00's so Kanye would have to go.

Yo I'm getting mad watching this. What is wrong with these people picking Erykah Badu to get bounced amidst Beyonce, Janet Jackson and Whitney Houston? Badu is the only one there who actually MAKES her music.
@BMOCTV8 жыл бұрын
Why does that matter? It's based upon who's music we like the most. It's our opinion. Just because an artist may be more involved in their music making doesn't mean it automatically sounds better than the next person. Music is music.
@BMOCTV8 жыл бұрын
How?
@manoneal17248 жыл бұрын
BMOCTV Yes, but notice how you say "who's music"..."who's music we like the most". Whitney Houston, Beyonce and Janet Jackson albums aren't really THEIRS. It has their name slapped on it, but for the most part they didn't create it. It's the intellectual property of others behind the scenes. Erykah Badu's music is HERS. She's the only one who actually has music to her name.
@BMOCTV8 жыл бұрын
Man O'Neal So you're saying they didn't actually sing those songs? If not why does that matter?
@manoneal17248 жыл бұрын
BMOCTV No, they sang them. But that's about it for the most part. The majority of the songs were created and performed by others.

Hell no. I swear y'all need to do your musical research. What's Going On changed the landscape of music. I could go on but I'll leave it at that. MJ couldn't even play instruments or read music. He's the least talented here by miles.
@MINK23938 жыл бұрын
Man O'Neal You are insane Michael Jackson could read music.. Michael Jackson is far more talented than Marvin Gaye because he was the full package.. If you wanna talk about changing the landscape of music.. Talk about MJs Billie Jean that changed music forever.. Dont even make me mention Thriller.. MJ is literally known for changing show business history and rewriting what Elvis and The Beatles did.. You need to to do your musical research.. All the barriers MJ broke in music are you kidding me? Marvin Gaye doesn't have the artistry that MJ or Prince had but he could sing his ass off.. MJ could sing, songwrite,compose, dance, produce, besides piano backstage he couldn't play instruments but he could sing the notes.. DO YOUR MUSICAL RESEARCH
@manoneal17248 жыл бұрын
MINK Absurd. 1) MJ was a great dancer and more financially successful. He was certainly a bigger icon. No argument there. But I'm talking about straight up audio music. Not popularity or showmanship. 2) Michael Jackson's music like Thriller (which was mostly made by Quincy Jones not Michael), was HUGE in how it changed the music BUSINESS. But as far as innovative sounds and musical composition, there was NOTHING new about it. And things that could have been considered "new" like the over-produced 80's drum machines, were terrible and really jump started the death of musicianship in popular music. Nowadays a lot of albums don't even have live instrumentation or studio musicians. It's all computer tricks and that could possibly be traced back to MJ. 3) To say that Marvin didn't have the musicianship that MJ did is insane. Besides the FAR SUPERIOR vocals, Marvin was an accomplished session pianist, keyboardist, drummer, producer and songwriter before he even broke out as a solo artist. And he played and sang live and served as a band leader. You say MJ could read music and compose. That's simply not true. I don't know where you get your information but I can promise you that it's false. And his instrumental talents were barely existent. 4) As for the actual material, Marvin's classic albums are far more unique, innovative and impressive than Michael's, and critics would agree. Go on any website like rateyourmusic and look at the raves and reviews for Marvin's albums in contrast to Michael's. It's not even close. People who actually listen to the music know that there is no comparison between these two artists. I can't PROVE to you that Gaye's music is better. It's all subjective. But the history book would certainly agree with me for what it's worth.
@MINK23938 жыл бұрын
Man O'Neal What Marvin Gaye albums are more innovative than Off The Wall, Thriller and Bad? 3 albums that are on the all time greatest and most influential albums of all time!! If we are talking quality MJ still wins and Marvin Gayes music isnt as timeless as Michaels is... MJ music was for more versatile and covered over 7 genres of music... Vocally its debatable but Marvin Gaye never rarely sang flat when MJ did live although MJ did far more than just sing on stage... MJ also had a 4 octave range while Marvin had over 3 octaves...MJ wrote and composed plenty if songs.. He wrote 9 out of 11 songs on Bad alone!!! He also wrote 12 out if 14 songs on Dangerous!! He got inducted into the songwriters hall of fame!! Co Wrote We Are the World.. Another timeless and influential songs ever... History books says MJs music is better clearly.. Had a much bigger impact worldwide and no one has had a bigger impact with music only rivaling The Beatles.. MJ is a singer, dancer, songwriter, true artist, true performer and is one of the greatest talents ever known and thats a fact!! Overall talent wise MJ could do much more than Marvin Gaye.. People who listen to REAL music would laugh at you.. Marvin Gaye is a legend no doubt but when your comparing him to whom some believe the greatest ever you just sound foolish....

MJ definitely gets booted here no question. He was well marketed and beloved by fanatics, but his music was so unimpressive and out of these four dudes he's the only one who had basically ZERO musical talent outside of singing (and by the way he's easily the worst singer of this group especially considering that he lip synced often). Prince was crazy talented, could do everything in the realm of music, and has made some CLASSICS. That being said he HAS made a LOT of really...really...REALLY...BAD shit. Marvin and Stevie, what is there to discuss? Two bona fide geniuses. Anybody who picks one of these two needs to be shot.

i think Michael's gift for arranging and composing is slept on, simply because (though he could play a bit) he was not proficient in playing a bunch of instruments. Michael is my favorite artist; however, it would be ridiculous for me to not pay respects to Prince Rogers Nelson. He's put on one of the greatest live shows i have seen in my life, and has a wide range of slept-on material. That man lived and breathed music. He certainly had his critiques, but Prince considered MJ to be a genius as well, and has publicly declared so. Most people in the industry praised MJ's dedication to his craft. He's certainly not immune to critique ( for instance, i think the HIStory tour was lazy with the 90% lip syncing), but you can't deny the brilliance of MJ. You can respect both MJ and Prince, and not have it be a battle. Be well...
@MINK23938 жыл бұрын
Man O'Neal Lol now I knoe you just hate MJ this is just blasphemy at its finest.. Zero musical talent outside of his singing smh... The blasphemy you just dont know how idiotic you sound.. Every legend has called MJ a musical genius... You won't get a response out of me.. good day

MINK Michael Jackson, he could sing, now other than that...let's see... - Couldn't play instruments - Couldn't read music - Couldn't properly compose staves (and I don't care what you say, if you're not putting down the notes and cords than you are not arranging anything) - Never lead a band - Had most of his best work produced by others (i.e Quincy Jones) ...where's all this legendary talent? To even compare him to guys like Stevie or Prince, who did ALL of these things, and Marvin who did most (all, mind you, with pure, live instrumentation and no help from computer tricks) is pure, blind fandom. MJ was more famous than these guys. But not half the musician.
