Even Roger said something like this recently. He said that the one handed backhand is more beautiful due to the free swing, but that two handed backhand has more opportunities to it.

2 handed is better in almost every way. Especially the return and high spin balls are troublesome for onehanders. The great one handed players (federer, wawrinka, tsitsipas etc.) all have the backhand as their weakest shot basically. Yes it's beautiful when they can lean into the ball but it's error prone and they have problems when under pressure.

2 handed back hand is very very illegal and it should be banned at the earliest. It is clear logic. How can a tennis player use 2 hands to play the sport. One should use only 1 hand to play this sport. Accolades achieved by a one handed backhanded player is double of what has been achieved by a double hand usage player. It is a disgrace and shame to this sport

It's not just "elegant". It's much more powerful and energy efficient. "Effortless power" is the key for understanding the OHBH strengths. It's longer to master at high level, it's more difficult to learn, but this is a fake problem if you consider a very talented kid who's playing it from a very early age AND who has a predisposition to it, while at the same time he/she doesn't feel good with the two hander. It has different characteristics than the two hander, different strengths and different relative weaknesses, but the main point is that teaching the two hander to kids who can't really feel natural with that shot is DUMB. We already know very well that in those cases (which are much more frequent than what we could imagine), the shot will remain a weakness forever, no matter how generally talented the kid is. Remember people like Tsonga, Stosur, Berrettini, Ivanovic, Barty. All EXTREMELY talented players with terrible, very weak two handers. Barty's backhand was actually slightly better, but it was still so useless in her game plan (it just helped opponents to take better rhythm), that she basically stopped playing it, opting for playing with one handed slice only, and she started dominating the WTA. Things are much MUCH complex than you often think. The two hander is not always easier for everyone, and it CAN'T be the better option for everyone, no way.

Same here. I'm a very average amateur player, still my OHBH is by far my better and easier shot from the very first days I started playing. Despite it's usually considered the most difficult shot in tennis, this is actually not true at all if I have to talk about myself, and on good days I can hit it extremely hard for my level, with little physical effort... I think it's totally not possible to whip the ball with two hands, like you can do with one hand (which of course means a free wrist). I can also hit very narrow angles and easily switch to heavy high bouncing topspin, plus I also have a good slice for my level too. Contrary to this, I really can't feel the ball at all if I try the two hander, and I find it somewhat hard to get rid of some old technical issues on my forehand side. It seems that people today are finding it very hard to comprehend the lethal potential of a well developed OHBH, in the right hands of high level players with specific predisposition for that shot... convincing them to adopt the two hander is really dumb.

Nadal was easily beating also every other two handed player with that lefty forehand, for what matters. The only players he found big difficulties against, were Djokovic outside of clay (though Nole was winning not because of his backhand, it was rather because of his strenuous consistency, the two hander being just a part of it), and Federer on grass and indoor, and from 2015 everywhere except clay. The only players able to really dominate Nadal's forehand rallies with the backhand, were the late Federer, whose backhand suddenly became a total nightmare for Rafa, and Fognini on very few occasions, who on his best days can consistently hit his double hander probably harder and easier than any other double handed player in history.

It’s not inferior, it’s just that the 2 hander as more advantages. 2 hander allows you to make last second adjustments (if a ball jumps up differently due to a crack, flat spot, hitting a line, or a rock) and gives you that extra left hand that aids with speed, power, & control at the last second as well. With the One hander, you need to set up early, guesstimate where the ball goes and take a huge swing. No adjustments can be made & you might shank the ball or get a bad contact. Vs high balls, 2 hander has the advantage bc it has a better shoulder turn by using the front of your other shoulder just like your fh. The one hander has to use the back side of the same shoulder resulting in a limited range of motion, one that is really unable to hit most high balls unless you are precise every time. I am a one hander and there will be days I can time the shot very well and days where the opponents pace, spin & height towards my bh bothers me & I can’t get a solid hit on it.

The two handed BH is virtually a two handed left handed FH as the dominant hand is the left ( of course referring to right hand players here) so the 2HBHer can be late on the ball and still hit a strong shot. Can hold the shot a split second longer to gain control can hit a stronger return of serve usually. I.e. Djokovic, Rafa, Agassi, Jimmy Conners Bjorn Borg Andy Murray cause they have more tendency to drive everything instead of chipping. And with rallycentric players today it makes sense. Great one handers like Sampras and McEnroe were primarily serve and volley and straight attacking players you don't see anymore. Roger is a different breed who can win easily from baseline or attacking style as could the great Bjorn Borg who had what looked 2H but was actually a Hybrid with top hand release and using his bottom RH as his dominant driver.

@goldencalf5144 Жыл бұрын
That's true, but the two handed backhand is more versatile. The two handed backhand absorbs incoming pace and spin more effectively, it's easier to handle high balls and it's more forgiving of being late and having less than perfect footwork. If you're playing a strong opponent, they won't always give you time to set up perfectly for a one handed backhand.

If we look at players like Gasquet for example or Thiem yes, cuz Gasquet has a shitty forehand, and Thiem is usually spinning a lot with his forehand and delivers powerful backhand more often maybe, but if he wants to, he might hit powerful forehand with consistency, it's more like a choice he was powerful on both side. Federer could be powerful with his backhand too but we know that his main weapon was the serve and forehand

There are 13 among the top 100- 13%. There is clearly a statiscally evidence that suggests that if you have one handed backhands you become more competitive, maybe because of the increase of variety due to slices and volleys.

Yes it's more difficult because 40 years ago Bollettieri decided that the OHBH was weaker. Then, his pupil Agassi got regularly beaten by Sampras (who, according to Bollettieri, had been previously "ruined" by his coach who has convinced him to change his THBH when he was 16), sometimes even being dominated in backhands rallies, but nobody seems to have realized this. Then Kuerten came, kicking a lot of two handed asses with his OHBH, then Henin came, just slightly before Federer came too. They made two handers look weak (especially Henin, but also Federer in morte recent times), but everybody's very quick to forget. Then Wawrinka came, who took three slams out of the hands of the best version of Djokovic ever, despite clearly being a lower level player than the Serb champ, and he did it by destroying his confidence with his lethal, massive OHBH. Then Thiem came, and he was the only player threatening the Fab3, for at least 5 years, mainly thanks to his ultra heavy OHBH... In the same times while the late Federer was making everybody look inadequate (even Nadal's forehand) with his massive anticipated OHBH. All this happened while tennis coaches actually had stopped teaching the OHBH after Bollettieri had declared it out of game in the late 80's. Such champions grew out of a much smaller number of kids than the number of kids using the THBH. But people it's so quickly to forget everything, when they're biased. The tennis bias is that the OHBH is "elegant" but weaker. But it's not elegant. It's actually just DEADLY, and it's much more efficient in terms of the amount of effort required. Then yeah, it's more difficult and longer to learn at high level... But NOT FOR ALL!!!! A certain percentage of young players feel weird with the THBH, they feel constricted and can't find an optimal feel for the ball, while they feel much natural with the OHBH. All this kids shouldn't be kept with the THBH, it will reveal a VERY WEAK shot, like we're seeing more and more, even at a very high level. Those very talented players are heavily impacted by those harmless, useless two handers, while they could've been destroying balls if they had a OHBH. Everybody knows their names.

The one handed backhand is better for offence while the two handed backhand is better for defence. If you are hitting from the backhand side, most of the time you will be in a neutral or defensive position. Therefore the percentages favour the two handed backhand.

One of the biggest advantage two-handed backhand has over one-handed backhand is the easiness to turn a defensive point into offensive, because when it comes to one-handed backhand, your defensive shot is the slice, there is either enough time yo set up for a full one-handed swing or there is not enough time and you gotta go for slice

@@rogergarland3746 depends on your opponents and your slice quality/depth, take Dimitrov for example, he loves to slice on his backhand, but at pro level he loses more than he wins because pros don't make mistakes easily; it's better to use it offensively as a tempo changer to throw opponents off. Repeatitive slices are only effective against players 4.0 and lower as they generally have trouble handling spins and would likely resort to slicing back with bad quality
