The most painful speedruns are the ones where you have to do an 80 hour run without sleeping to get a chance at a world record.
@1krubby2 жыл бұрын
Do those even exist anymore? By now every long form speedrun has breaks built in where you get to pause the timer and sleep for a while

This is super interesting, but the ergonomics of using one hand with a SNES controller seem like a nightmare, and that positioning of your hand is probably why your hand hurt so badly. If you actually still want to do this, I’d highly recommend figuring out how to hold your arm so the stress on your joints/fingers is lessened.
@reidleblanc31402 жыл бұрын
Yeah everything about that position looks a nightmare. as someone with hypermobility who is extremely prone to RSI and has to be very careful about how I position my hands/arms during all activities .... the finger overextensions .... *shudders* One thing people overlook is shoulder/arm position GREATLY affects hand pain. holding up your entire arm like that instead of resting it on a table just looks so immediately painful

If an "accessible" category is changed to force using a controller in a way that destroys your hand, that doesn't seem very accessible. I have an ASCII Super L5 (the one-handed controller featured early in the video) and they were explicitly intended for JRPGs, so it's still pretty amazing to see a Super Mario World speedrun using one. It is not easy to use for action games.
@noahblevins95692 жыл бұрын
I personally think it is super cool to include extra categories for 1 handed gamers. Many music instruments etc require stretching the fingers in ways that were abnormal before, and the body will generally adapt.....leaving you pain free. Playing a couple hours for like 3 sessions is not anywhere close to the time it would take to actually adapt.

Speedcubing (solving a rubik's cube as fast as possible, basically speedrunning a rubik's cube) has a one handed category. it seems like it'd be really difficult to turn fast but top solvers solve at over 7 turns per second, it's really cool if you haven't seen it before and a slight flex, I have two 9 second solves in competition B)

Theres these people who can solve one that has been alternated 100 times blindfolded, one handed 5x5x5 rubix in 20 seconds yet if I turn the cube more than 10 times I can't get it back to normal
@junebug4132 жыл бұрын
i think proper wrist support is the more important aspect here, laying the controller on a hard wooden desk probably didn't help with having to turn your hand in weird ways.
@apu_apustaja2 жыл бұрын
Yes. Rubber mat is a basic requirement I would have thought.
@barkbuck55212 жыл бұрын
My wrists hurt just thinking about doing this. I've tried playing a couple games with one hand before, Sonic Adventure 2 and Oblivion. It didn't go well in SA2 but it was easier than you'd think for Oblivion. Not necessarily easy, but it went better than expected.

I love that Shovda got a plug in this. One of my first thoughts when i clicked this vid was the special controller she was using to play through the injury on her other hand. Kaizo is cool, kaizo one handed is just beyond impressive

I believe that runs should be comparable in order to count. In this case, there should be a SNES controller 1 handed, and a Anything goes One-handed category separation.
@fatburdo2 жыл бұрын
Man, alt controllers should be allowed, you ppl are gonna hurt yourselves then no Speedrun for you!! You can see from halfcoordinated that they don't stretch their hand that much and have a looser grip, looks more ergonomic

I have one question, why would you use your right hand for the mouse?
@Storster2 жыл бұрын
Pretty much any PC game you play that uses keyboard (WASD keys), and even a lot of general software shortcuts, are designed with right handed mouse in mind, so I just got used to it.
@Icysnowman2562 жыл бұрын
@@Storster The way I got around this was by using numpad, with wasd being 8456, jump being 0, inventory being, 1, etc. But if your keyboard didn't have a numpad, that would kinda ruin that whole idea :(

It's bad enough using the dpad constantly on switch lite. I know it's not one handed, but the layout makes it mess up and cramp my thumb during intense games (joycon drift yayyyy. Thank God many games let me use dpad). This sounds a million times worse.

What he did at GDQ is amazing, however GDQ as a series of events are toxic and have put gaming in general into disrepute. Events like GDQ need to be held to account so that no other event goes down the same toxic path.
