Lungs burning, your desperately sprinting through the burning, decaying city streets. In the distance the soulless rhythms of "Feel the Beat" echo ever closer. You accept your fate. Just like everybody you loved, you will soon be gone. Suddenly, a beaten up humvee adorned in battle wounds and war like spikes comes barrelling around the corner. A mysterious man in a grey hood steps out and offers you his hand. _"Come with me if you want to live."_

I always feel a little sorry for Eurodance songs. It seems like they only ever get remembered now if there's some semi-ironic meme attached to them. Which is too bad, because...I kinda agree with Todd when he says Eurodance is what you think of when it comes to "night" music. There's just a kind of energy to them I appreciate, especially in these mopey times.

dude im so sure eurodance is coming back. seen a few albums on bandcamp that recreate eurodance, techno picks up some elements from there and it is in the sweetspot where it is nostalgic for the older generation and comletely new to the new generation. it will come back (probably altered in some way tho) mark my words! dont believe me? if 80s and 90s corporate music can make a comeback, cheesy commercial dance music can aswell :D

On April 1, 2020, COVID-19 took the life of Adam Schlesinger, co-founder, songwriter, and bassist for Fountains of Wayne, who were featured here on One-Hit Wonderland for their 2003 hit “Stacy’s Mom” (despite me being a fangirl, getting picky and snooty and not considering them mere OHWs.) They were on Conan the first week back on air after 9/11 performing the Kinks’ “Better Things” as a message of hope; and now, nearly 20 years later, Conan did a very lovely tribute the day after Adam passed, including replaying that performance. Speaking of One-Hit Wonders, Schlesinger wrote the song “That Thing You Do!” of the movie of the same name, a movie that tells the story of the one-hit Wonders AKA “Oneders”. I just wanted to mention that the world has lost a VERY talented singer, songwriter, and musician who has contributed so much, with and without the band. Fountains of Wayne were once featured on this show, but they very very much loved, and Adam did so much beyond, and now, on this episode, a slightly cheeky but 1) interesting feature and 2) relevant reference to this devastating disease caused by the Coronavirus, I just felt it would be nice to give some love to Adam Schlesinger, a TITS OHW alumnus, and a tragic loss among many thousands of other victims. He was only 52.

Harsh. Also, I may be remembering it wrong, but I was sure a TV show here said, at the time, that she was the producer’s wife. Eurodance is one of those genres that was niche at their time, and kinda got tossed on the wayside. Personally, I liked a lot of these songs and I thought they did their job of being club music very well (and are actually pleasant to listen to compare to some modern examples). I loved Rhythm is a Dancer when I was a kid and when I lived in Germany mashups were not an uncommon thing to hear on late-night radio so when my family was out of range of AFN's the Eagle (an English radio service for military folks in Europe) we'd sometimes hear mashups of german and English songs that were amazing.

Someone buried in comments probably said this 3 yrs ago, but: a lot of italo disco and its neighbors + offshoots were often even more not-giving-a-fuck about performer “authenticity” than this. The briefly outstanding French project “Valerie Dore” had a different singer but apparently also different synth + electronic drum syncing in live/video performance versus the producers/session players on the recordings. That seems to have been the norm in Italy too. It always seemed like every italo disco “band” was an ephemeral alliance of a few then-contemporary producers + musicians who might have never be all together in the same room again after they made enough material for a couple 12” singles, and then “joining” 8 other bands in the same genre and *hoping* that ANY of them would sell enough to worry about live/video appearances. Meanwhile, people from all over Europe were holiday partying in Italy and bringing the music and some of its organizational quirks home with them. It also came to North America fantastically with Lime. Milli Vanilli themselves were created by the German producer behind Boney M. Knowing some of all this context as an adult now makes it very easy to feel astounded that anyone gave a damn about the MV scandal, except to say perhaps that they were probably not worth paying to see live. In the US I think it was almost a mass hysteria from sudden revelation thatvthe *Entertainment Industry* is always selling you an artifice package of one kind or another. They were like the scapegoat for Anglo popular music after a few years of treating Def Leppard’s drummer as rock inspiration porn, while their recordings where even prior to the car accident the drums were like 100% M Mutt Lange and a Fairlight CMI. I mean sure, the drummer had creative input and played live, so every case is a little different and everyone has reasons to accept/disregard it around the music THEY are attached to. But this gets me thinking about Orson Welles’s documentary F for Fake, and not-caring about fakes so much that I’m caring-a-lot. It’s shitty how house and eurodance music later used the voices of black women whose appearances weren’t considered marketable or whatever and pissed on proper credit/compensation, but that’s its own issue, while it seems like the people who did studio work on earlier italo/euro disco tracks often just weren’t looking for a stage career or felt a little too old - both of which would apply to me if I were making italo/euro disco during its peak time. Sorry to be long as fuck, but you got me thinking about music I haven’t heard much in a decade.

The rest kind of blended together as the filler between the songs I actually wanted to listen to on the pop stations. But yeah, the 90s were a lot more than grunge and Britney Spears/BSB.

As a 90s Kid all I cared about was BSB/NSync/Brit/Christina/98 Degrees/and other pop. I didn't discover my interest in hip hop until the year 2000. Then in 2001 I discovered I liked R&B. In 2008 was when I started gaining interest in other genres.

Britney Spears and BSB were late 90s. Grunge was early 90s. In Europe, Eurodance built momentum for the entire 90s and then Denniz Pop and Max Martin served it to US.

I just came from Watching Drag Race and as soon as I saw the title I was like "Did Crystal Mythed cause a resurgence in El DeBarge???". Instead It's the Black Eyed Peas. Can we just replace them with fun drag queens?

Mr. in the Shadows, I'm curious about your conclusion of, seemingly, favor of "Rhythm is a Dancer." I'm aware it's not a "one hit wonder," candidate, but your general perspective on 90's dance music is interesting to me. I was an "underground," or as I prefer, "on sight" DJ throughout most of the 90's and into the early 2000's, so I heard, and often had to play, many of these songs. Even to me, a DJ who was there and saw the insanity that was the 90's dance-music scene (house, techno, etc.,) I couldn't understand the madness sometimes, but I did enjoy it, that's why I did it. Your more or less, outside perspective, gives me a welcome, wider view of this absolutely incredible time from my late teens and throughout my 20's. Thanks for the videos.

I'm Italian and here the song was bigger then in the US, I think. People remember it from their youth. And you also have to keep in mind that in Italian the word "corona" means "crown", so we will never associate it just to the virus. (and i think this could be valid for Spanish speakers too)

I also love your explanation of this early - mid 80s obsession with Asia, all these songs that were really quite racist and feeding stereotypes of the chopsticks noise, the Ah so, rice hat, bowing and ridiclous use of play names. There was a Thompson Twins song Love on yourside which had some really racist lines like "Like some Nip in Saigon" and then you had "The Chinese wall" complete with Chinese sounding gongs and cymbals, the usual xylophone chopsticks thing. Turning Japanese was also racist. The 80s was a high point of Asian stereotypes with Long Duck Dong in 16 candles, the Japanese Robster Craws guy in Revenge of the Nerds, The kid in Indiana Jones, Movies like Empire of the Sun and Goodnight Mr Lawrence which emphasised WW2 Japanese cruelty, The Japanese guy in Police Academy. Plus even worse, was all these cultures and languages were blended and lumped together - Japanese noises in a song about Shanghai China etc.
