This sort of music is something the new games are lacking. Believe me when I say this, I like the new games and the story they want to tell, but man is 343 completely muddling the overall atmosphere of Halo with the wrong genre of music. Yeah, five sounded great, but there was this near heavenly, almost celestial or majestic tone that O'Donnel's music set. The music made you feel small, yet in awe of the power around you, it added an air of mystery.
@surrept19798 жыл бұрын
Love the way you worded that, and I agree completely. It illustrates the success of O'Donnell and his team!

Totally agreed, but at least 343 is trying-and is- doing good to the franchise, also. It can get way worse, this is nothing. Just look at Konami with Silent Hills, good lord, what a fuckup. They really need o'donnel back, though, it just isn't the same without him.

Martin O'Donnel is an incredible craftsman and he takes a lot of inspiration from 70s prog rock, King Crimson and Rush for example, you can definitely hear the psychedelic/experimental harmonic playfulness in the soundtrack, not to mention the good musical direction from the game director from the projects inception, the idea to incorporate these sci-fi soundscapes with ancient sounds like the Gregorian chants was genius and set the atmosphere of the games perfectly. Halo series was lightning in a bottle, incredible art.

Especially with the psychedelic landscape, he identified the sci-fi aspects of halo with those sounds and paired them with the Gregorian spectrum for the surreality and enchantment of the music, combined with gameplay allowed for true ‘ahead of its time’ experience.

On the surface humanity is invaded by an alien civilization and you're a super soldier who saves the day. But if you go deeper than that, you as the player are just in surreal amazement of the covenant. Their weapons, color scheme, motivations etc. Our fascination is contrasted so well with the serious tones in the games. Whereas humanity in the game are simply trying to survive the brutality of the covenant. I think its a beautiful juxtoposition

A lot of this music has that mystical feel that brings back memories of playing halo 1 for the first time and discovering all of the alien technology

ODST was the fourth halo game I've ever played after halo reach, ce anniversary and halo 3 in that order and yet when ODSTs music starts to play, I get extremely nostalgic

I like using this for when I have to type my papers. It helps me focus with the added flashbacks from each of these soundtracks. Love it

2:35 I think about a Forerunner place like the Epithet map where sentinels fly around doing their things... aka an absolute overload of beauty and engineering wonders :3 Man I love Forerunner architecture and artstyle (CE, H2, H3)!

I love these so much. Each one is fantastic. It has such a dreamy fun tone to it. Dream again is one of my favourites, I'm glad it was first

man you can really tell the difference between the old martin o'donnell stuff and the newer stuff from other composers at 343. The old stuff just sounded so much more uniquely halo whereas the newer stuff just sounds like its trying to sound like halo. The age old battle between original and generic I guess :/ Play anything from the original halos and I can tell you that's halo, anything recent and I'm not too sure.

I really like Halo 4s soundtrack. don't care what anyone says. And I feel the only reason halo 5s isn't memorable is because of the awful campaign although I do like it's soundtrack alone
@cvckw7 жыл бұрын
Betito117 if halo 5 had split screen co-op, a longer campaign, and more master chief, then it would be my favourite halo game. tho i do love the abilities you have, zoom capability, and the cut scenes.

Betito117 I personally think 343 are bad at capturing the overall feel from the music. Their music I think, could've been slapped in cod and no one would notice.

I was listening to this while writing my Sociology paper. It really allowed me to concentrate on my work, and I ended up getting it done without feeling exhausted. Thank you for dedicating your personal time to selectively pick these amazing pieces to compile into one video for our enjoyment. I am looking forward to what you will push out next :)

I would say that this music left a lasting impression on me. So many emotions that were otherwise thrown aside were brought into the game with this playlist, really added to the atmosphere and created a frontier that was otherwise not known by any gamers. Halo remains the best in the series for me, although Halo 2 brought a level of badass otherwise unheard of and Halo 3 brought new wonder and calamity, Halo: Combat Evolved had a lasting effect that has yet to be replaced. One of the best campaigns I've ever experienced.
