This movie was actually made at the very last time it could be made, at least without being presented as an explicit period piece, due to the imminent rise of digital photography which rendered these kinds of photomats obsolete. It adds quite a bit of poignancy that Sy would have soon been out of a job anyway and unable to continue the passion he's fully devoted himself to as anything more than a hobby.

Sy's world is muted neutral tones whereas the family he's obsessed with is so colorful and warm. It's amazing story telling through color. You actually feel cold and isolated in the drab fluorescent lighting at the photo lab/store and you feel warm and cozy seeing the family photos, especially the kids pictures!!!

I get why people say this is a suspense/thriller/horror etc. movie. But honestly, when I first saw it, I must've been the only one who came away from it feeling very, VERY sad. Kinda like how Jake felt towards Sy. I knew -- this movie -- is really a "tragedy" story more than anything else. Robin's final monologue is just heartbreaking if you catch on to the notion that he slips into talking about himself.

The ending is deliberately ambiguous, and there have been quite a few theories about it. Here's the one I've come up with after a few years to think on it since the first time I saw it (and apologies for the nasty subject matter, but it's kind of unavoidable with this particular movie). Sy's breakdown talking about parents taking pictures of their kids doing "things children shouldn't do," plus his earlier line about having mono and hepatitis as a child, indicate that his own parents forced him to do child porn, which is the source of his mental issues. He's tried to make up for that trauma by devoting himself to helping other families create wholesome memories like photographs should be, and especially latched onto the Yorkins because they seemed to be the ideal family he never got to be part of. And then that image is shattered when he discovers Will's affair, and combined with losing his job goes totally over the edge he's been teetering on. I go back and forth on whether he was always going to just take the pictures, or planned to kill Will and Maya and then changed his mind, but either way he ends up subjecting them to the same trauma he went through, transferring it to what he sees as a deserving target for not appreciating the good family he has. A lot of what he says during the whole scene is probably the exact same things his parents told him ("Don't really do it. This is all pretend."). And then after those pictures served their purpose, he destroyed them like he wished he could do to the ones his parents made, and instead used up another role just shooting random stuff in the other hotel room he conned his way into. The final photo is him slipping fully into his delusion of being able to be part of a perfect family, basically disappearing into his wall of pictures.

Robin always had those dramatic chops... people forget he was a Julliard trained actor before he was a comedian (he was there with future Superman Christopher Reeve). Robin started to do standup as an outlet for all this manic energy and he just blew all the other comics off the stage. Btw, if you wanna see where Robin learned to improv, youtube clips of Robin Williams & Jonathan Winters... Winters was Robin's comedy hero.. they both had the same crazy manic improv ability, though I think Winters genuinely had some mental stability issues.

There are 2 other thriller movies starring Robin Williams that you need to see: Insomnia, where Al Pacino plays a veteran cop in a small town investigating the murder of a young girl, while playing a deadly game of cat and mouse with the primary suspect. Mark Romanek had Jack Nicholson in mind while writing the movie, but he turned it down as he thought it would just be a repeat of his role in The Shining. I think that's definitely for the best, as having an actor like Robin Williams who was so well known for playing positive, friendly characters just ratchets up the creepiness further. In fact, it actually kind of plays as a deconstruction of his more emotionally needy characters. Just imagine if Mrs. Doubtfire intended for us to be fully on Miranda's side, and you have something a lot like One Hour Photo. It also helps that he so rarely did this kind of physical transformation for a role, not even for the two other villainous roles he played the very same year in Death to Smoochy and Insomnia (yeah, it was a weird year after being such a fan of his my whole life).
@woodbbl3 жыл бұрын
Mrs. Doubtfire is suuuuuuuuuch a terrifying movie and it took me awhile to be able to enjoy it again after it clicked how insanely hard the tone misled you into cheering for the TRESPASSING EMOTIONALLY ABUSIVE STALKER EX OH MY GOD. It still feels kinda weird watching it, but man... this role just displayed Williams' incredible range in one movie far too well - both in terms of character/voice variety, and in terms of being able to move gracefully and seamlessly between very different emotional tones.

his name is a play on words Seymour Parrish ( See more Parish) his camera acts as a Sniper Rifle as his weapon of choice. a bit like "Phone Booth" the victim learned in the end to be faithful. his nightmare scene was based on a deleted scene where he talks about red eyes being shown in photos. some believe there are elements of Neon Genesis in this film (Robin Williams admit to being a fan, the Kowaru Unit action figure was from his personal collection) in the end Sy was the victim of child abuse being forced to do kiddie pics

Just a random lil tidbit, but the Evangelion figure that shows up in the movie was originally thought to have been Robin's contribution since he was a fan of the anime (He was a big anime and gaming fan, even named his daughter Zelda), but after someone contacted the director about it, he confirmed that it was just a cool looking toy he saw and Robin had no input in using it. Evangelion would be a good watch, not for the channel, but on your own, if you haven't seen it. P.S. Look up "Robin Williams plays Spore", it's him at E3 playing with Spore's creature creator before the game was released.

“The World According to Garp” is a fantastic 1982 RW movie based on a bizarro best selling book from a few years before. It’s hard to describe but has a great cast and a very young Williams as the title character and it goes down a lot easier then these late career movies. It was his first “serious” role after doing so much stand up comedy and gave everyone a taste that he could not only ACT but that he could also flip and access the comedy in a moment and his naked heart was just as readily accessible behind his eyes.

Sy must have known that in order to be tried and found guilty of any crime against William and his girlfriend, then William would have to admit/confess to being with that woman in the hotel. So, the question is: Was it Sy's motive all along to force William to tell on himself? William probably assumed that there actually were photos and would serve as proof that Sy was guilty. Sy was probably released after questioning, since the police had no reason to hold him. It was William's word against his. But, wait! What about that knife left in the sink? Did Sy stab the girl to make it look like William did it? That would be one way of getting William thrown in prison for life.

Ooh, you've made me sit and think about what movies of Williams particularly connected with me (besides the easy answer of "all of them" I suppose!) Hook, I think, will always be the most special to me because it came along at a time in my life when I was very isolated, and was a central theme of a local camp for young teenagers I went to where I actually did find myself feeling like I fit in for a brief moment in time. It made me appreciate the story of Peter Pan, which I never really felt a connection to before. And it was a very very apt role for the man who was so good at bringing out the childlike joy and laughter from inside so many adults, to end up doing the same for himself! Having said that, I also goddamn love Popeye. It's weird and strange and bizarre and the songs are whaaaaat and yet... it's so damned likeable?? And the casting really was unbelievably well done. Not just of Williams although I literally don't believe there's another soul living or dead who could've done that so well, but also poor Shelley Duvall who got done royally dirty for The Shining, and the rest.

Williams' movies got me through a lot as a kid going through some serious mental health issues, so while I appreciated how ridiculously terrifying he made Sy, I also couldn't watch it again - seeing him do that movie was like seeing Will in photos with another woman, I guess you might say! So I'm glad you watched it, because I could remember just how excellent it was and also say "ehhhh yeah, I have NO wish to see this again because WOW he's too good at being terrifying." It was also surprising to see some familiar faces in this I didn't recognize the first time!! I don't know why I didn't recognize so many of them but here I am 20 years later yelling BILL LUMBERGH!!! DEAN PELTON!!! FRANK FUCKIN' BENNETT WAS IN THIS???? OH MY GOD AGENT PHIL! GET 'IM, PHILLY! Has anybody in the history of ever seen THIS as their first RW movie? I've always been curious as to whether a) it's still an effective movie and b) if it made it harder to see Williams as the joyful manchild (the good kind, not the awful kind) he was in most of his work.

I don't know if anyone has said this already -- and I'm sure many agree with me when I say this, including you, OGB -- but Robin Williams was robbed of an Oscar nomination for this. Your first few minutes of assumptions of what was gonna happen in this movie made me go "Oh, hold on to your hats, it ain't what you think!" This was his most heartbreaking performance ever.

This is one of those movies that once youve seen it once, you need to watch it again sometime again with the knowledge gained from the end... it goes from a thriller/suspense to a sad and tragic movie. There are Sy's all around the world, in many places... they arent bad people, just broken and alone.

This movie actually plays for NRA, you know. The message: don't go in hotel room having sex with your secret lover without a loaded fire arm. You never know who forces him self in and makes you to do weard stuff at the knife point.

Yes, Insomnia with Robin and Al Pacino is one where I don't think I can recall a single funny line from him, but all drama. He was excellent. And of course, she's beautiful - I remember her from Gladiator and The Ice Harvest.

I loved this movie when it came out Robin Williams was a talented actor. This movie reminds me of when people used to develop pictures it seems like digital took over

its great seeing him go from a funny character such as Popeye to this serious character in this underrated film.

And now everyone shares all their photos and personal info ALL over social media willingly. But Sy is the weird one...?!?!

Great pick! 👍 to see another film that is a departure from lighthearted or tearjerker Robin Williams, you might like Insomnia

This is one of those movies you only want to see once even though it's close to perfection of a psychological - thriller/drama.

Another excellent performance from Robin in this. Proving his abilities in both the Drama and comedy fields. A very good film.

This was a good slow burn. You know he's going to do something. The only question is - how off the rails is he going to go?
