One island, two countries: For more than 100 years Ireland has been split into British Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. This divide has only been exaggerated by Brexit as the people of Northern Ireland had to leave the European Union together with the rest of the UK in 2020 - even though the majority of voters in “Ulster” voted for “Remain” just four years prior.
The controversial EU-exit is now boosting Irish nationalist forces that might have been forgotten since the Good Friday Agreement and the end of the “Troubles”: Both republicans parties like Sinn Fein and militant dissident groups like the New IRA. While Sinn Fein has become the biggest political party in both Northern Ireland and the republic, the New IRA is already rated as a top security threat by the British Security Forces.
This 60-minute documentary investigates in five chapters how Brexit has fuelled the Irish nationalist movement and questions how realistic the dream of a United Ireland really is today. From Belfast over (London)Derry to the coastal town of Drogheda, meet former enemies from both sides of the Troubles, radical Republicans and those trying to make a positive change who all share ONE ISLAND.

I’m the grandson of a catholic republican from Tyrone who left to work and set up a family in Manchester in the 40s due to lack of work. As an English born culturally Irish catholic I really struggle with the rights and wrongs of both sides. I see and understand the republican movement but I don’t agree with the killing as a way to achieve the goal of a united ireland. I just hope that the education and welfare system in the north improve the wellbeing of its people which will hopefully bring an educated and democratic resolution. Irish people are beautiful on both sides. Be proud of yourselves and don’t let hate decend through your families

I'm a Yank. Mom was from just outside Charleville, Co Cork. Her Father, Patrick O'Connor, born in Ardpatrick, Co Limerick ( in the Galtee Mountains) was a teenager during the civil war. He joined up with Sean Moylan and Dan Breen in the "flying columns". They wouldn't let him on the front lines, so he cut down a lot of trees for roadblocks, dug ditches, and made tea for the men. He remained a loyal Republican until the day he died. Many of our family friends growing up were from Northern Ireland. Some came in the 50's because of economic opportunities being limited at home, and some came in the late 60's and early 70's because of the Troubles. Most didn't talk too much about it, but were always raising money for Irish Northern Aid, Sinn Fein, and the Hunger Strikers in the early 80's. I was intrigued by the stories of the people who did talk about what was going on in NI. People's doors being kicked in in the middle of the night. Children tossed out of bed by soldiers. Internment. I became very sympathetic to the republican cause. I even thought that I would go over and join the cause ( US Army trained) if it could make a difference for the better. Yeah, I was a pretty dumb kid back in those days. It was always a hope in our family that Ireland would one day be reunited as one Nation; One Island : One Ireland. Maybe there's still a chance I may see it in my lifetime.

Dumping economic migrants all over the island to suck on the government teets, complete and total disregard for our cherished culture, all while destroying ranchers/farmers business (not migrants but green initiatives to rely totally on the parliament) could and should calm that bitter rife real quick. Dublin will soon look like that cesspool London in coming days. We are prideful people. Proud of our heritage and who came before us. Preserving the island as necessity for generations after. Sitting idle isn't an option. Coming from a deeply rooted republican family going back to the turn of the 20th century, perhaps I am too optimistic and the island is already beyond repair.

Paddy Gallagher. What a tool! He fails to understand the principle of consent of both sides of the divide. At the moment, Northern Ireland remains a constituent part of the the UK. Hence the PSNI. When the demographic change, there may be a successful vote to reunite with the south of the island. He also fails on 2 other counts: 1) The people of the Republic may not vote to accept reunification - especially when they know people like him in NI will not accept the status quo in the Republic. 2) There are many Catholics in NI who will also not vote to rejoin the Republic as they see themselves better off within the UK - healthcare free at the point of delivery being just one of those reasons. If the 'New IRA' (or whatever they call themselves this week) start any violence in the Republic, they will be mercilessly crushed by the Gardaí and the Defence forces. If they thought the RUC and British Army were harsh, they will get a huge culture shock!

I played rugby in the north being from the south in the AIL 20 years ago. We went to Limavady playing Ulster. The sideline were calling us Fenian bastards. Few years later we went to Portodown, a protestant club, and they could not have been more welcoming. Didnt know much about the troubles being from the South but I could imagine it would be very hard to separate yourself from your identity growing up on both sides ,especially if you had a relative killed on both sides, but at the end of the day, British soldiers should not have been policing the the streets of Northern Ireland

From what I have read there are calls for independence in all quarters of the UK. It’s no secret Scotland and Norniron want separation of some kind but believe it or not, movements for Welsh and even English independence are brewing. London is going to end up like Washington DC. A federal district that can’t really tell the constituent countries how to run their spaces. Devolution to the max. After the politico-economic hurdles are addressed, full separation seems inevitable. Just a matter of when.

It is truly to be hoped that the process of engagement and discussion on the future political structure on the island is a peaceful one. There are scenarios even I can imagine, notwithstanding Brexit, where unionism has an established and rightful place alongside republicanism in the north. It does need another commitment to trust and good will though for this to happen

Who we consider today as the Irish were originally planters and invading Celts from central Europe. They latterly invaded and colonised neighbouring Scotland, the remnants of that invasion being the Gaelic language, which is still spoken today in the Western Isles of Scotland. There is no pure and homogeneous Irish race, and never has been. They are a mix of Celts, Saxons, Vikings, Normans, etc, just like the rest of the British Isles.

There is little prospect for a United Ireland the way things stand. Unionists will strongly oppose it and so the two Governments will not force it upon them. The unrest over Brexit has again polarised the two communities. 25 years since the signing of the Good Friday Agreement and little has changed. The politicians from both sides are not yet mature enough to sit down and discuss what is best for Northern Ireland. I would be amazed if a United Ireland happened in my lifetime. Would a Referendum pass in both jurisdictions if a border poll was called? I don’t think so.

I want all of you to understand something about all this. I'm from the Republic of Ireland. Half my family is from here and the other half is from Northern Ireland. Everyone talks about Catholic vs Protestant, Orange vs Green etc. I'm a Catholic. Fact is down south where I live Protestants and Catholics live side by side. Half the time you wouldn't even know which one people are. Why is this? Nobody cares that's why. Nobody cared up north in the beginning. The British state forced the two groups to fight by giving one side more stuff than the other. The point of this is as follows; if people are too busy killing each other over injustices they don't have time to look for the real bad guy because they're blinded by simply trying to survive. Everyone wants to blame one another and look across the table at each other but nobody bothers to look up. If you want to understand more of how this works read Animal Farm

As an Irish American, the grandson of an immigrant from Cork (but with a varied American/EuroMutt background) I have always held Ireland in high regard. Obviously, the last name helps to keep me in the mindset! And as someone who has been going further and further left in my politics in America, I too am anti-imperialist and anti-colonialist, but I'd hope that the youth there could see that suffering and violence cannot be the answer to ending these things. People, children, in America die every day to violence that has no reason or purpose and despite whatever grand ideology you may believe, it's all still death for death's sake in the end. The enemies that uphold these structures are used to the violence and they feed on it. Mutual Aid and Respect, building our communities and cities to be oriented around uplifting the least among us, and truly living for one another has got to be the counter to the suppressive violence of past ideologies. I finished the Netflix show Derry Girls a while ago, and in the final episode of the vote for the Good Friday Agreement, I wept for a feeling of relief to a stress I'd never had to live with. Ireland may not be my home and y'all may not be fully my people but I hope to all that's good in the world you can find the time for Peace!!!

Thank you for this thoughtful perspective. It saddens me to see the entirety of Ireland, even after the sacrifices of too many lives lost, not in charge of its own destiny. The Republic has traded the hard fought freedom from the yoke of the crown for that of the EU/WEF/NWO money men. Look at the housing crisis, the influx of unvetted foreign thugs, and the teetering “miracle economy” to see what the future holds, as the lines between FF, FG and SF blur to see Ireland overrun and sold out. And in the North, you have Republicans still enamored with the murderous Hamas and Fatah lunatics, whilst clutching to their fondness for Che and the most extreme leftist revolutionaries known. As a lifelong believer in one, united Ireland, it pains me to state that the future is bleak.

If Ireland becomes one, John here shall be out of a job. The Politicians have already demonstrated their feeling toward their Northern counterpart and treated with contempt when they have visited Dublin. It is very sad that his father was murdered by whom ever and a shocking waste of life. You can sympathise for John, but you really can’t understand how John felt growing and why he took the road he took forward himself or how he feels even today. John however, can understand how the families of the Israel’s feel when the HAMAS Terrorists murdered 1200 Israeli Citizens and kidnapped some 270 men women and children. I understand why John hold the view that Northern Ireland should be United with 5he Republic. i question the belief that it is best for the people of NI. I sincerely do not believe that it is the correct move, financially, and from a Health and welfare standpoint point, particularly the old people and those nearing retirement. I never understood why there is no party, movement, or even a politician that campaigns for independence. Independence from Britain, and independence from Ireland. Couldn't the nation forge a path ahead on its own? A joint identity for a joint future? I grew up during the troubles, and there was a group which main aim was independence. The ‘Ulster Independence Committee’. I doubt they would have received much support from the Catholic communities (being a mainly Protestant run organisation), but they did exist, and received some support from Protestants in the North. Edit: The UIC did actually become a fully fledged political party, known as the ‘Ulster Independence Movement’.
