"I wanna sit under my own vine and fig tree A moment alone in the shade At home in this nation we’ve made One last time" The song was not only him stepping down. It was he has also passing on. This son is the last time you see him in the play.

Right after this song he dies. Because the song said that "The faults of incompetent abilities will be consigned to oblivion, as I myself will soon be to the mansions of rest" the mansions of rest in this case being heaven, And oblivion meaning death. So this song signifies him both leaving the government and leaving this world.

Two reasons why this is so emotional. 1 - This song represents possibly the most important moment in America's entire early history. There are so many examples of Republic nations that fell apart because the man at the top refused to yield his power. By willingly stepping down and not running for a third term, and setting the precedent of a two term maximum for every subsequent president, Washington ensured that the nation he was so instrumental in creating would live on long after he was gone. And sure enough it has (even if the guy running the show now is a giant sentient Cheeto with a god complex). 2 - it's the last truly uplifting moment in the show. With this crucial father figure now gone from his life, Hamilton goes off the rails. After this song, he loses his job as Treasury Secretary, humiliates his family and destroys his political standing by publicly announcing his affair with Mariah Reynolds, eventually leading to the death of his son, and provokes his long time rival Aaron Burr into the fateful duel where he loses his life. This song is the ultimate turning point in both the smaller story of Hamilton's life, and the larger story of the fledgling USA finding its feet on the world stage.

I like that they made a big deal out of this. It's one of the few times that anyone has voluntarily relinquished power in all of human history. Given how popular Washington was, and that he was basically creating the job as he went along, him deciding not to run again set the most important precedent in democracy. Western civilization had only ever had kings and emperors before that moment. He "taught us how to say goodbye" and move on to the next leader.

Christine nailed it when she called it "the end of an era." I felt the same way when my boss retired recently; he was my first boss at my first job, and I couldn't have asked for a better, more competent, more supportive one. He was at our company for over 40 years, and was my boss for the last 10 of those. I was heartbroken when he announced he was retiring, and it's been a tough transition, but he more than deserves to reap the rewards of his labors and enjoy his time "in the mansions of rest." TL;DR - Pour one out for George, and then another for Jack. We shall not soon have men like them again.

Hi! I’ve been watching your reactions and I’m a fan! This song in particular, gets me every time whether I’m watching an animatic or listening to it on the album. I cry every time. The vocal on this is insane and it makes you feel what he is feeling. Also, it’s the historical reference because we all remember George Washington as a great leader and president. So you, as the audience, feel like you are experiencing him step down from power and how much that means to our country moving forward. Great video! Thanks for sharing.
@kire98917 жыл бұрын
Oh gosh I don't remember getting so emotional over this song when I watched it elsewhere, but between this particular animatic and your emotional response Christene I started crying too! It *is* a very emotional song, since, like I think you said at one point in the video, Washington is like a father figure to Hamilton, and his only real ally in government. With Washington going back to Virginia, it will be like he's a world away from Alexander who's still up in New York. So I think the emotion is very fitting, even though I do feel silly crying over someone just going home XD

I LOVE this song! I remember that my Social Studies teacher played this to teach us about Washington's farewell address. After hearing it, I LOVED it. I searched it up, and there were results saying it was from Hamilton. I was like "THIS IS HAMILTON! NO WONDER PEOPLE LOVE THAT MUSICAL!" After about a month of listening to this song while doing homework, I was on Disney+ and I found out Hamilton was on it. I watched it, and I loved it (Obviously). So I'm happy since this song basically introduced me to Hamilton and other history-based musicals. I'm even in the process of writing a musical. This song remains my third favorite because of Helpless and You'll Be Back, but it will never be toppled by other Hamilton songs because of my history with it.

what I love about this song is the emphasis on "teach them how to say goodbye". In this time, rulers/leaders didn't volunteer to step down; they led until they were replaced/usurped/died. So Washington is saying that America needs to learn that it's okay for the leader to step down and let someone else lead. That was Monumental! And Washington along with other Founding Fathers worked hard for America to Not have a king since that was all the people knew. Another thing people don't usually know is that before FDR in the 40's, presidents only served a maximum of 2 terms out of a tradition George Washington set. It wasn't law until after the 1940's. Washington could've held the office until he died, but he stepped down after 2 terms. So, every president until FDR followed that tradition for nearly 150 years. This song makes me tear up because it's honoring that historical moment.

Idk.. maybe it has to do with Washington knowing when to say goodbye to go spend sometime with his family free of worries before he runs out of time... Or Alex having to say goodbye to the only father figure he knew... Perhaps Chris awesome vocals... Yeah... this is just so sad... he's just going home, but we'll never see him again...
