Burr wants power essentially. That's what the room represents. Hamilton, Jefferson and Madison are all near the top deciding the fate of the nation on their own and Aaron realized regardless unless you have power you have no specific say in how the nation is to continue. I’m pretty sure Burr wanted to pursue politics suddenly because Hamilton said something like “You get nothing if you WAIT FOR IT” And “wait for it” is Burrs whole thing, so Hamilton making fun of him there sort of pushed him to finally stop waiting for it. In a later song, where burr was running for president, Hamilton was like “You’re campaigning openly, that’s new?” And burr goes “You know what, I learned it from you”

What I don't get is - what is the purpose of power if you do nothing with it? Like, for the majority of the play Burr refuses to reveal his opinions on anything that matters. We know he's jealous of Alexander, we know he loves his daughter and wife. That's literally it. He served in the war and claimed to care about the Constitution so one can argue he does want what's best for America... And yet his entire campaign was based on superficially charming men (and their wives) to get votes. The REASON Hamilton voted for T-Jeffs (in the musical, in real life it was more complex) was because Burr did not express his beliefs or ideals on anything. Hamilton's whole issue with Burr isn't that he has the "wrong" morals, it's that he has none, period. After thirty years of being pressured by Alex and others to achieve something, to have a dream... he decides he wants to be in the room where decisions get made. What?? How would that be of any use unless he intended to do something with it? It's like he wanted to be in the room just because Hamilton was in there. Even once he beats Schuyler and becomes senator he does nothing with that power, all he's shown doing is showing up with Thomas and James and taunting Alexander over their false belief he stole money. I adored his performance and singing voice in the musical but Burr is not nearly as complex as people pretend he is. He's just a shitty person.

@@xXxJason_ToddxXx I know it is 5 months since your comment but wanted to point out a few things. Firstly tbf most of the characters other than hamilton we don't get much on their political beliefs. Most of Jefferson and Madison is them opposing hamilton. We do get a bit of a look at madison as small government trying to keep the union together, and jefferson as the idealistic southern farmer, but nothing crazy. The musical is also 2hrs and 30mins long, and that is with a number of songs including those that add to burr being cut from the musical. There simply isn't enough time to have another song about all Burrs political beliefs like feminism or political participation. Also the fact is that the Burr character is already deep, and doesn't need the addition of complex political beliefs. In fact adding a song about Burrs political beliefs or mentioning it would take away from his character. Burr's entire character is based around the fact that he never truly admits to anyone how he feels,is always slow and cautious to action, never shows his true self, when hamilton first meets him and asks him "are you Aaron Burr sir?" he responds "that depends who's asking". That is in and of itself part of the mystery and depth of Burr. We never really know what he is thinking or what he believes. Room where it happens and Wait for it are great 1.because they are great songs but 2. because for second Burr drops the facade and says how he truly feels about things.

A. Keane I get what you’re saying, and I have amended my opinion somewhat. I should point out that I don’t hate Burr’s character, I just don’t get his motivations towards the end. He finally decided to go after something he wanted rather than waiting for it, yeah? But he went into POLITICS. You cannot be a politician that accomplished anything while expressing zero opinions. Politicians by their very nature need to be opinionated. So to reiterate my earlier question: Beyond being jealous that Alexander is always in ‘the room’ and not him, why does he want power? What is his goal? It’s lampshades in the musical that no one knows what his position is-even Madison and Jefferson point out that if he’s asked a question he changes the subject or ignores it entirely, even his enemies and those voting for him don’t understand what he’s trying to accomplish. I just want to know if his only reason was because he was jealous of Hamilton having political power and not him?

@@xXxJason_ToddxXx I think Burr want's to do good and help build the american nation. He fights in a war for it, he supports the US constitution (which was as the play portrays divisive at the time), He says as much in Dear Theodosia. Even in Room where it happens he kinda speaks for all of us, he points out how no one has a say, and points out that these 3 guys just decided the future of the financial system of the US, and the future of the capital government, and nobody but them heard the terms or got a say. However Burr is sorta socially awkward if anything, while he hides behind a charming, charismatic facade, as he admits in wait for it, he is so scared of messing up and destroying his families legacy that he cannot bring himself to admit his own opinions without feeling safe to do so. We see this play out throughout the musical. Burr supports the revolution and is willing to die for it, but can't bring himself to state those opinions pubicly to anyone outside his friend group. He's good soldier with a keen mind, he gets promoted to LT. Colonel, which was the same rank hamilton held for most of the war, he serves a number of generals. However when actually put in front of washington he can't bring himself to risk proposing his own ideas, so just sorta vaguely complements washington. Burr supports the constitution but can't bring himself to risk openly stating those beliefs. As Hamilton brings up Burr is in love with Theodosia but won't admit their relationship in public (obviously probably a prudent choice given the circumstances). The few times we do see Burr open up its when he feels completely safe in doing so. He only starts to be antagonistic towards Hamilton after he has the safety of a senate seat and the support of the democratic-republicans. His main song (wait for it) is conspicuously a solo. In stark comparison to hamiltons My shot, which is performed in front of a packed bar, and later out on the streets. He admits to Hamilton that he won't stop for anything, because he firmly believes that Hamilton will support him given that he is doing what he believes hamilton would do. Burr certainly has good intentions, although there is certainly also some power-hungriness and hamilton jealousy involved(though basically all the politicians in the show are power hungry other than old washington). He just is never in a position, other than when he is alone, where he feels comfortable taking risks and admitting his true feelings. Ironically, when Burr finally reveals some of his true feelings to someone other than the audience. When he explains to Hamilton that nothing will stop him chasing what he wants and that he has learned from him, Hamilton kneecaps him. Which leads to the unfortunate ending.

This song is basically burr's desire to know how Hamilton does it. These seemingly impossible decisions came out so smoothly. He *really* wants to know how it's done. But he never gets the opportunity.

It's not so much that Hamilton had more opportunity than Burr, because he actually lacked many of the things that Burr already had from the get go, it's that Hamilton acted upon every opportunity he had in order to get where he was. Burr on the other hand "waited" for everything to sort of fall into place because he simply believed that eventually, keeping quiet would work out in his favor and make him successful. Of course there is the fact that he couldve lost or tarnished his families reputation because he has to live up to his families name or something along those lines, but he still could've realized that what he wanted wouldn't be given to him just because he was patience. Sorry if you already knew this or read it somewhere else.. :'-)

Like the main reason he got to go through school so fast was cause his father's influence. Hamilton had to fight for it all and then even surpassed Burr. You are so right about the fact that Hamilton acted upon every opportunity. Which, to be fair, also got Hamilton in a lot of trouble XD

It's a bit of a stretch to say that Burr's father's influence got him to graduate so fast. Burr's parents died when he was 2. He applied to Princeton first when he was 11, and was rejected. He applied again at 13 and was accepted because he was a LITERAL child genius. That's the reason he graduated in two years. (In fact, by the time we get to "Aaron Burr, Sir" he's only 20.)

oh yeah! sorry i didn't mean to say that burr didn't prove his worth and wasn't a genius. i was just saying that his father used to be the president of the college he went to and was like really respected and this helped get burr on the fast track...like he would have succeeded in doing well either way, but it helped who his father was that he got accepted so easily and was allowed to basically go through school so quickly.....hamilton had no such luck and so despite being as skilled as burr, had a harder time getting people to accept him

I personally think this song is not really about Burr and his lack of accomplishments but more on the fact that he has found what he wants. It's him feeling suspicious of how they traded these things away and him not being a part of it is hard for Burr. This song is in fact a turning point for Burr as he starts acting a little more like Hamilton since he has found his want in the pursuit in politics.

I understand Burr. I also wanna be in the Room Where it Happens. My "friends" are never proud of me, so I never feel like part of the group Guess what? One time, I tried to confront them about the issue, and I even provided a comic I wrote to show them how frustrated I was. All they did was make excuses and laugh at my comic. I love this song because it is the only one where Hamilton is shown as the villain. Irl he was a really bad person, and this is the only song in the entire show that shows that. Burr wants to know. He wants knowledge, and the ability to do what's right, not the power, as many think. Hamilton is the person who wants power (and Jefferson obvi). He gave up New York City so that he could control the banks. It was his way of benefitting himself without breaking the law. Hamilton doesn't care about fairness, hence the lines "you got more than you gave" "and I wanted what I got". (Small spoiler) in the next song, Schuyler Defeated, however, the play makes it start to look like Burr is the villain, until the very end, depending on how you look at it. I feel like this was done intentionally because the room where it happens is in Burrs POV, while every other song until your obedient servant and the world was wide enough is in Eliza's of Hamiltons or Jeffersons. The room where it happens is the last song seen from Burrs point of view where he is not the villain. No one trusts Jefferson though, so of course you wouldn't believe it when HE says Hamilton is the villain. Hamilton is the evil one, but because the story makes you believe that Burr is on the wrong side from right after on, you don't trust what he said. This is the moment Hamilton turns. But you don't see it because he changes the way you see it. From that moment on you only see it from his point of view, just like Wall street. "All of Wall Street thinks you're great" - Edit: it would also make sense (though this part I don't think was intentional) that the writer of the musical, the guy who makes you see it his way, plays Hamilton. Hamilton wrote the story. You only see it how he wants you to see it.

What I think.... *Arron running after Hamilton when he left to go to dinner. He trips and hits his head, now he sees tons and lots of stairs leading nowhere and somewhere. He keeps seeing flying doors, and when he runs up one of the stairs (that's the "right" one) he jumps to the door and doesn't make it and falls again to get his head hit on the ground but to him he feels like he's falling. He blacks out.* *The three people in the room hear a thud and comes to see what it was. They see Arron on the ground. When he jumped he managed to knock the door knob off somehow. They look to each other.* "What is he doing here? You didn't invite him, did you?" ".....this is why I didn't want him here. Now he's going to make a song on what he thinks happened today...shiiiiil" "Weeelllll, I could help with that. Let's just get on with this boring meeting I'm sure will end up being pleasant...for me." Burr has no right to be in the room where it happens because no one trusts him. He has done nothing to earn his place in the room. Hamilton, on the other hand, has worked hard and has a right to make decisions bc he’s actually done something for society. So u shouldn’t feel bad for Burr imo
