Hey, Golf Duff. New subscriber here. I've been trying one-length irons, on and off, for almost a year and a half. For some reason, I seem to hit all of them thin. The idea really appeals to me, but my ourcomes, so far, do not.

Welcome as a subscriber Sean! Sounds like your doing something funny with your ball placement maybe... Hard to say though. But since you do that with all your OL irons (if you do) then there must be a consistent problem. It's not always going good for me either, I have actually gone up in handicap since I first got the one length irons. But I think it's all in my swing. Next year I will focus on getting more consistent, and keep working on my swing. Have you gone and done a custom fitting by the way, to your OL irons, or are they just like mine off the rack?

This is so refreshing! I am a beginner in his 60's, yet to play my first round, and am hitting my 7 about 125 on the range and following Sam Goulden's square to square videos. My golfing friends were telling me they hit their 7 iron 150 plus and their drivers 200 yards. SO I started to watch experienced golfers (and some of my friends) from my balcony, which overlooks a par 4 at about the 150 yard mark. What I found is that many of these guys were only hitting their drivers from the tee between 150 and 170!!! So next I went to down to see how the general golfer was doing on the par 4 10th and paced out the distance they were hitting there - the average tee shot was around 160 yards. i also watched a few hitting their irons on the range - 7 irons were often going about 120 to 140 yards. So, I conclude two things - golfers are about as honest as fishermen when it comes to the outcomes of their sport! I am sure, of course, that many are more up front about their distances, but the male ego makes too many exaggerate their distances. The effect of this on me has been to delay my debut on the course . YES, I know that was stupid, but I felt intimidated by the big talk - which I now know was fake news! I am now ready to hit the first tee, knowing (on the range at least) I can hit my driver as far as them and that my straight 125 yard 7 is fine for a beginner. Which brings me back to Golf Duff ...... I really appreciate your honesty and hope it encourages other high handicappers and beginners to celebrate what they can do and not what others say they do. You have the perfect attitude - it's supposed to be fun. Congratulations and i won't tell your girlfriend!

That's all that matters. Please let me know how your first few rounds go. And again, thank you so much for the comment, and the fact that you subscribe. Thank God. A great video from a real everyday Duffer. I am tired of 6' 3" inch guys with swing speeds in the area of 100 mph making videos about Game Improvement irons. I am 73 years old and started playing golf at 60 years old. I usually am in the area of 100 for a 72 par 18 hole course. The best score I remember was 88. I find that most people I play with are within 10 strokes of 100 more or less. These are the people who I want testing Game improvement irons. Thank you, Golf Duff. Hey Duff, Watched a number of your vids and have now subscribed. I started golfing about a year ago and I too have an average of about 103-ish. I broke 100 a few times but I am improving bit by bit. I have had an interest in one length irons since very early on and would love to try them but don't have $$$ to buy a set just to see if they work for me. Maybe i'll find a used set cheap and give it a shot. I recently bought a set of callaway rogue st max os irons and woods and driver and have been happy with them.

Hi Bill! Thanks for subscribing, and commenting. I went away from one length for about two years, but have recently gotten a new one length set that I really like. I bought the Cleveland Launcher Halo XL irons last year, but hated them, so I tried to sell them for months, and nobody wanted them. Eventually a guy with a Cobra Radspeed OL set asked if I was interested in a trade. So I did it, and was very happy with the new set. Now I think I will keep them for a long time. Really feels great to have one length again, as I am really bad at ball placement. And the one length gives me so much confidence, as I just have the same swing all the time. I really like it. Will make some new videos soon on my new set, and experiences with OL again.

Interesting and entertaining! I have played both standard and single length irons. Currently have a set of PXG 0211 standard and a set of Gria Nova single length. The lofts are quite different between the sets, but I do hit the single length mid irons better. On the short irons there is very little difference. (I carry hybrids 16,19,22 and 25 degree so my irons start at 28 degrees.)

@@GolfDuff, I recently sold my secondary residence so I now have both sets in one location. I am playing the single length currently, trying to cope this winter conditions here which means lots of very thin or bare lies. Since my irons 6- SW, there is only about 1.5 inches difference in the lengths and I just choke down slightly on the standard 6 & 7 irons. The biggest help from the single length is that the lie angle is the same on all clubs.

Congrats on the 87! I played one length irons for about 3 seasons, 4 - LW, pinhawks first, then F7 and F8. I don't have an official cap, but I generally shoot low 80s to high 70s, with 75 being my PB.They do work great. I like the wedges the best actually, I think that they are easier on my back, not having to bend over so much. I'm actually playing my Ft Worth 15 irons this season because I was getting too many flyers with the SGI heads. I'm considering a set of OL irons 7- lob wedge, maybe a 6, and then go to standard length 5 and 4. I find I can hit regular 4 and 5 irons better overall. I love the spin with the wedges also, it's basically drop and stop, or spin back on all but the hardest greens. On some downhill par 3s it can be too much though, and I've had a few balls spin off the green, even though they landed in the middle. I tried a few OL hybrids, a 19 and a 20 degree, but didn't really get along with them either. It was either a good shot, or a worm burner with those, I don't know why.
@GolfDuff
@GolfDuff 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks James! I have never been close to the 87 again, so maybe it was a one off thing. Actually I have started to play so much worse in the later part of the season, my handicap has gone up to where it was before the season started. I seem to have gotten inconsistent. I love the concept of OL irons, so I don't think I'm going back to standard any time soon, but the shafts might not be right for me as I never had a fitting for them. I might go back and have them fitted next season. I got the one length down to PW, and under that I have regular irons. Backspin is something I almost never have. Wish I did, like you seem to have. Even though it can get a bit to much at times😂 I bought a 5 hybrid OL speedzone this season that I really like. But I feel that the flight is very low, so the roll out can get enormous if I hit them to the greens. Most of the time the ball rolled off in the back of the green. But anyway, it's one of my most trusted clubs now. Anyway, James thanks for subscribing and commenting👍💯

I broke 80 last week using Milford Golf SL-7 irons. I have been playing golf for 4?years ( 66 years old) . My set is 6 iron( 29 loft) to GW(50) graphite shafts. I use Cobra SL hybrids 19 F9, F8 22&25. My swing speed with driver is high 80s mph After experimenting with a 29 degree iron-hybrid I found my carry distance was far more consistent with that club than my SL 6 iron. So I will add the Tour Edge 521HL to my bag for a while. Handicap is down to 12 now. IMO consistent carry distance is more important to scoring well than long distance from the occasional low running 5 iron
@GolfDuff
@GolfDuff 3 жыл бұрын
Seems to me you are playing great, breaking 80 is nothing more than a dream for me at this point, ha,ha. Do you find that you are swinging slower than your 100%, just to make the swing smooth and more consistent? I was thinking last night that I think I swing 95% of my full power on all shots, and it occurred to me that I should slow everything down and maybe try 70% swing power just to see if that helps my consistency. Do you use the Jim Venetos swing?
@kymstock1852
@kymstock1852 3 жыл бұрын
@@GolfDuff Yes I do swing possibly at 90 % to keep my balance . I use the Jim Venetos swing, a method that limits body movement. In the last 4 months I have been fiddling with my set of clubs again. As high handicap golfers we need to embrace higher loft clubs as our friend. We need clubs that get the ball up in the air easily and keep it there for as long as possible ( high spin rates). My Driver is Cleveland HB Launcher turbo 12 degree head, my fairway woods are now a 18.5 5W and a 22 degree 7 Wood, both being easy to hit off the deck. I have kept the one length 19 Hybrid mainly because in the windy conditions we have I need a low trajectory shot as well. I had to drop the one length 22 &25 Hybrids , and now use a 24 degree hybrid -iron ( Cleveland)and a 29 degree hybrid -iron ( Tour Edge) instead of my SL 6 iron. Then I am still using SL irons 7-LW, mainly for approach shots. Having the same swing for all approach shots from 130 m -50 m out is a huge advantage.

I started in 2018. I couldn’t hit my variable length irons very well. In 2019 I bought the F8 one length irons 5i-GW. I noticed inconsistencies in distance at first. I found that the shafts just needed to break in. The ball flights are still unusual, but my strikes land where they should. I have caught up to my friends and they’ve been playing for 20+ years. I was so impressed that I finished off the one length set with 3/4 driving irons and 56/60 degree wedges. The game is so simple now because I just swing one way and I rarely lose golf balls as well. I’m a one length guy for life and I can’t wait to buy the newest version.

Interesting, I was so consistent with my OL irons in the beginning, but now I feel like I have lost my swing. I actually think I have been watching to many "how to swing more consistent" videos on KZbin, and it has got me into thinking to many swing thoughts. I seriously need to get back to the natural swing again. I'll get there eventually. I am getting myself OL wedges next season, as I want as many clubs as possible to be one length. Do you use your driving irons much off the tee?
@jargonaut8956
@jargonaut8956 4 жыл бұрын
Golf Duff. My swing has gotten stronger. I have gained yards on my irons. I think I need the 1L forged tec version. Whatever club I need for any given shot I have to grab the next loft up. I’m hitting my 6i where the 5i should be now and so forth. I like that my wedges are longer, it did take me a bit to learn how to feather them. They have such a towering flight path that I don’t worry about fast greens. The length also gives me the confidence to hack it out of the thickest rough. I would recommend getting the driving irons(3,4) one inch longer with an x-stiff graphite shaft. I find that my 3,4 and 5 irons can bunch up in terms of range at times.
@jargonaut8956
@jargonaut8956 4 жыл бұрын
To prove my point. I think the longer wedge is an advantage, look how easy Bryson’s shots from the rough looked with his one length wedges, (in 7iron length) when he won the us open. Also he’s immensely strong lol, anyways I’ve hammered some nice shots out of deep rough at 150 yards. You have more leverage with the longer shaft and a high ball flight that pops easily out of the rough. For an easy chip around the green all I do is choke up on the club. I never had that versatility with my old wedges.
@GolfDuff
@GolfDuff 4 жыл бұрын
Jargonaut ! Yeah, you are so right. They actually said the same thing on a Golf show on TV after his win. I was looking at the OL wedges from Cobra, and saw that they only had them in 56 and 60 degree. That is to high for me, I might get the 56 as a sand wedge, but I would much rather have a 52 degree to go with it, instead of 60. Way to much for my liking.
@jargonaut8956
@jargonaut8956 4 жыл бұрын
Golf Duff cobra needs a 52/54 degree 1L mim wedge. However, they do sell a sand wedge on the cobra website. It wouldn’t hurt my feelings if they sold a 64 degree one length lol. It’s kinda weird, if I hit a fairway I might fly the green with a wedge. If I hit the rough I’m hitting the green. That’s why I needs a 64 degree

Great video mate. How have the rest of your rounds gone since that 87?
@GolfDuff
@GolfDuff 3 жыл бұрын
Great question. First I had two rounds over 100 again, started messing up (but it was on a new course, so I was not unfamiliar with the holes). But after that I have consistently been under 100. My lowest after the 87, has been 88. But normally it is 97, 94, 96 etc. So very close to 100. But still I feel good and confident with my F9 clubs, but I have started working on my swing to get more consistent. Because my GIR percentage is really low. And I play really bad with my driver. But unfortunately I don't get to play much during the winter, and we have so much snow, and the indoor centers are closed for Covid. So all I can do now is dream about the summer😀

@@GolfDuff Thank you for responding. Stay safe and look forward to more videos on your progress with 1 length irons. I would be interested to see the results of a few rounds where you leave the driver at home and just play a 3 wood/hybrid as your longest club. I've been using my 1 iron as my longest club, which has been very interesting re GIR thanks to being in the fairway for my second shot more often than not. I'm still playing variable length shafts as one length irons aren't easy to try without buying here in Australia, and they ain't cheap! 😔

Was there a big difference between steel and graphite ? Better or worse?
@GolfDuff
@GolfDuff 3 жыл бұрын
I am never going back to steel shafts again. The steel shafts felt horrible on mishits, there was vibrations that felt horrible. Graphite is so much more comfortable, and to be honest, they just feel more hi-tech. Other than that, in performance there is nothing different in my opinion. It is a money and feel thing mostly. I have played graphite for years, and am so used to that, so steel was a mistake for me.

Played half the last season with the one length set, and liked it a lot. I really enjoy the same setup for each club. Even though I see from my numbers that I struggle with the same things as with my old standard length set. But that's just me, and my stupid swing. ha,ha! The courses are not opening for a few weeks still here in Norway, so haven't really started a new season yet, only played some times on a simulator. But I have decided to keep the set for a while, and instead work on my swing. It's the indian, not the arrow like they say.

I switched drivers this season, and now I can finally drive again. And I am also looking to add a 3-wood to my bag. Looking for something used though. One length sure is easy compared to standard, and to be honest. Playing one length actually made me a better standard length player as well, as I am much more aware of my ball position. Was there a big difference in carry yards between the clubs? I'm thinking of switching to a one length setup...I've been only playing for 6 months, but I comfortably hit my 7 iron 190yds and my 4 iron goes about 220. I'm afraid that a long iron with a shorter shaft will end up just being a standard 7 iron for me.
@GolfDuff
@GolfDuff 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, I actually hit longer with the F9 OL irons on average compared to my variable length irons. And the gapping in between clubs is as it should be, with one major exception. I have gapping issues between my 6 and 7 iron. I seem to hit my 6 iron much shorter than my 7 iron, but my 5 iron is longer then them both, so that seems fine. I have almost the same exact amount of shots on 5,6 and 7. So unless Arccos (my shot tracking system) has made a mistake and calculated them wrong, it must be a thing I am doing wrong. Might be a mental thing. If I where you, I would go get custom fit for one length irons, and they will make sure your gapping is right. But keep in mind that most fitters don't like OL irons, and will probably try to sell you on standard sets instead. Good luck, and let me know how it goes👍

Swing speed is the determining factor with carry distance for the lower number ( aka long irons) in a one length set. If your one length set has strong lofts like the Cobra brand, your carry gaps under the 29 degree 7 iron will get less than ideal as swing speed diminishes. Consider hybrids as long iron replacements to get the ball up into the air to get carry at / or below 26 degrees loft ( cobra 6 iron) . You can use their one length hybrids , but getting a longer shafted hybrid increase the swing speed. Getting a variable loft hosel like an old Cobra F7 4-5 and 3-4 allows you to adjust loft to get your carry gaps worked out.

@@kymstock1852 Update* I've been playing with the new rad speed one length irons for about 2 weeks now. I've pulled the hybrid out of the bag, and I use irons. I can hit the radspeed one length iron ~240yds off the deck, 5 iron goes 220, 6 iron goes 200, and 7 iron goes 180-190. . Full PW goes 165, and I choke up and swing easy for 150yds. I got them with a stiff graphite shaft, and they feel amazing. You do have to strike it well...however. Sometimes I'll hit a 4 iron 200 yds, but when I really hit the sweet spot, it almost goes too far. Sometimes, I'll hit 6, 7, and 8 the same distance depending on where I strike it on the face. That's just me being a new golfer, tho.

UPDATE - I think people who try one length irons, like me, struggle with the long irons. The solution I found sounds stupid, but I use a single length 20 degree hybrid to replace the long irons in my bag. As I've found with a bit of practice, full and 3/4 swings get you 3i & 4i distances. If you then choke down on the grip and do the same you can get 5i and 6i distances. What do you think of this?
@GolfDuff
@GolfDuff 2 жыл бұрын
When I played with one length irons (that I don't do anymore), I focused on having the same swing and doing everything the same every time. So I never choked down on the clubs, or changed anything. And that was also why I liked to play them, since they made me not think to much about my swing and setup. It was wonderful. I had 5-pw, and a 4 hybrid in OL. But had gapping issues with my 5 and 6 iron. These two had the same distance, so there was something I did wrong there. Maybe choking down would help... I don't really know. But since then I have switched to standard length, and after playing OL irons I notice that I have much more awareness of my setup, since I think about my ball placement now. So OL has helped me even transitioning to more traditional length irons.

Why go for graphite shafts if your custom fitting was with steel shafts?
@GolfDuff
@GolfDuff 4 жыл бұрын
I have played years with graphite, and in my fitting i went with steel because of the lower prize on steel shafts, plus I thought steel would be just as good. But on mishits, especially on the driving range the vibration in the steel shafts really hurt my hands. So I wanted to go back to graphite. I will probably never play steel again. Less pain with graphite. But I will get a fitting this year for new graphite shafts.

@@GolfDuff I have been playing with Cleveland HB Launcher hybrid-irons graphite A flex ( variable length) lately. I bought them for my wife. I was impressed how easy they were to hit and how forgiving they were of poor strikes. The 5 iron (24 degree loft) was easy to get up in the air. I have been having trouble getting reliable distance with my SL 6 iron ( 29 degree) . I think I am trying to hit it too hard! Anyway I tried the 7 iron ( 30 degree) from the Cleveland set and was impressed how reliably I could hit the ball to 132m . However my target gapping distance is 135m , so I have purchased a Tour Edge hybrid -iron (29 degrees) which should get me 135m. My point is, see if you can find some of these hollow bodied hybrid-irons on Facebook Marketplace or E-Bay as an alternative to hybrids and keep your girl friend happy ( they are cheaper)

I felt like the one length irons gave me a better understanding of ball placement in the stance, as I got more aware of what I was doing after beginning to use them. I had gapping issues with my 5 and 6 iron on my one length set, they went the exact same distance. Don't know why. When I was looking for a new set of irons, I wanted to try something regular again. But I kind of liked the one length system also... but I decided it was time for standard again. And, yes I am always honest to my partner, so I told her. And she thought I was an idiot... ha.ha

Go get a lesson and specifically ask that you wanna stop flipping and hit the ball more with your hands by your left thigh at impact. If you’re able to do that you will knock about 6 stokes off your game. In the video you showed you have a huge flip at the bottom instead of keeping your hands going through impact and maintaining an angle... trust me this will be huge for your game and it’s an easy fix once It clicks.
