One Lesson From Every World Cup Winner

In the almost one hundred year history of the World Cup, only eight nations have managed to be victorious at least once. Many great sides from 1954 Hungary, 1974 Netherlands, and 2018 Croatia have tried and failed. So what makes a World Cup winner and how can lessons from the past be used to crown a new champion?

I'd say 2014 Germany was a case of long term plan pays off, they had been preparing that team since 2006 (with Lahm, Podolski, Schweinsteiger) and got great results in 2010 (with Neuer, Ozil, Muller) before winning in 2014. As for 2022 Argentina, I'd say learn to adapt. They recovered from the loss to Saudi Arabia at the first game with a lot of changes, they changed their tactics for Croatia and dominated the team that beat Brazil, changed once again for France and had them on the ropes until a lucky penalty that completely changed the game (although I agree patience played a huge role in surviving Netherlands and the momentum change against France).

Really great point on Germany, carried the momentum through and stuck with their coach through that time too. Scaloni was certainly adept at shifting where he had to. Thanks for watching!

Watching the history and lessons of the World Cup made me realize that no matter of what squad, players, or coaches; you must work together, not heavily rely on one players, and not being egotistical and full of themselves. Do all of this and learning your mistakes; you/your team will make it farther and some chance of winning a tournament. Unless you pay the ref or cheat your way to the final but karma will bite you later on. Also what I heard that the 1986 World Cup host was originally gonna be Columbia but something happened to Columbia and FIFA give it to Mexico

1998: That’s not the lesson. The success of that France team was built on completely revamping and investing in their youth program in 1994 after failing to qualify for two World Cups in a row. The youth program of France in the 90s (led by Gerard Houiller who would later manage Liverpool FC) had a huge influence on how the 2010 Spain, the 2014 Germany and the 2018-22 England squads were built.

If this was about players, not nations, then 2002 would be the "Never give up" lesson as Ronaldo came back after two crushing injuries that sidelined him for almost 2 years to then win it all in that World Cup so the world remembered why he was considered the best in the world before his knee tore down. He's by far the best center forward I've ever watched, and the best player not named Messi who played football while I was alive, and how he overcame what ended so many footballing careers to play back at the highest level again for another good 5 years was bonkers considering the rather recent, at the time, downfall of players like van Basten due to injury problems.
@intothefray12
@intothefray12 5 ай бұрын
R9 was an absolute phenomenon and people who never watched him are missing out. He was a demon, lightning fast, strong and had the finishing to match. But you're absolutely right, the fact he managed to come back from such a devastating injury, adapt his game and still compete at the highest level was a testament to his brilliance. Thanks for watching.

More than patience, I would say that the lesson from 2022 WC is to not underestimate the rival. Argentina (my country) had won the Copa America the year before and the Finalissima against Italy. We were feeling a bit confident, that the group stage would be easy, and still Argentina was defeated in the first match against Saudi Arabia. Never made that mistake again. Never underestimated an opponent again for the rest of the tournament. If Saudi Arabia was capable of defeating Argentina, so were Mexico, Poland and Australia. Every opponent had to be taken seriously.

It's okay saying "togetherness" won the Germans the 1954 final, but having seen the highlights and stats, I just think Hungary were ridiculously unlucky not to win and it just goes to show how far luck goes. Hungary had more chances, hit the woodwork, had a goal ruled out for a dubious offside, and the complete opposite of togetherness, the German keeper Turek made numerous wonder saves.
@intothefray12
@intothefray12 5 ай бұрын
It's a fair comment and Hungary were desperately unlucky I agree, I just think the fact Germany even made it to the final is unbelievable given the fact they were playing semi-pro. I think if they didn't have a great team unity they never would have made it. Thanks for watching
@jimmyyue238
@jimmyyue238 5 ай бұрын
The sides participating the match can also have the serious effect as in 1954, the FIFA definitely wanted West Germany to win over Hungary despite being underdog. Even in modern day, referee can also impact too. Although there is also an example but is U20 world cup in 2019 after USA knocked France and suddenly became favorites to reach the final (and even winning the world cup by beating Ukraine in the final!) but suffered a shock defeat to Ecuador in quarterfinals (USA U17 and U20's quarterfinals curse).
@timeanagy8495

Hungary was very unlucky. The Hungarian team was one of the best teams ever if not the best. The German team was good, but not so good. There were some serious incidents (like the disallowed Hungarian goal). Maybe this was the only final where the much better team lost. The Hungarian team was frightening. In 6 years they had this one loss. They still hold some records, like the highest Elo points ever or the 27 goals scored in the World Cup. Without this one loss the team's reputation would be even higher. If Im not mistaken, without that loss they would have had 51 matches without a single loss... Incredible.

Why do you think it's only a small group. Most times Argentina Brasil Germany and Italy have had so much help from refs. It's nearly impossible 4 another Country to win it. Germany , literally Diving all their World Cups together.

There is also one very important thing. Influence/politics/bribing or whatever shady that happens outside the pitch. This has helped more than 50% of the winners. No matter if you(the reader) like it or not. Here are a lot of examples: Both in 30,34 and 38 you had a host(or like something like semi host in Italy in France) that got helped by power of their police or political regime. You also have cases like 66 ot 98, when again the winner was host and had very shady thing happening to opponents or somehow good callings for their side. There are also the Germans in 54 that doped(although in the rules, it's still a moral dishonesty). You have Argentina winning 78 with the help of their regime and that famous Peru match. Also Argentina having 'the hand of God' or 'penalty for Argentina'. Also France got rewarded too many penalties last 2 WC or had a case like with England that could have been another 2-3 England penalties. Also their win in 98 when Ronaldo somehow got problems exactly the night before final(it's very shady 'coincedence'). There are more cases for sure, but I think those were enough. You still have to have one of the best teams to win a WC, but it does also help to have a help from outside or some shady coincidences that help you in multiple occasions in a row.

@@LMC-xz6qh Who didn't have it? England in 66(which till this day can't win anything else) who got unfair goal to the Germans in the final? Or that the Portugal players had to go to 1 stadium, but then the match was changed in last moment and such making them harder before the game? Or France in '98, who also couldn't win anything till about 10 years ago and the previous 2 or 3 WC they didn't even qualify? And somehow the biggest star of the tournament got I'll exactly the night before the game? Or all those hosts when WC was new? Read some news about them, to see how many of those WC used their leaders, or police, or army to do some shit to others so they can have it easier. Even this last WC was very special, wasn't it? Penalty for Argentina almost every match, Infantino with the 'injustice if Messi doesn't win it' and the Qataries with 'Messi is our favourite and it would be pleasure if we give him the trophy'. Explain also how Messi(in his peak) couldn't score more than 2 goals every other WC, but somehow now scored in almost every match? And that are just those that are the obvious ones. Who knows if there aren't some other for who nobody's expecting.

The mayor of Rio de Janeiro came out publicly just before with promise to finish touches to Maracana (in this case remaining paint color to bottom stands) in the colors of the winner, assuming in the bag that Brazil would be it. He thought he would fan the wave of obtimism and get liked,........so happend that he had to paint and forever remind all future attandents for decades of the aftermath of the opposite team, celeste sky blue, winning and presumtionsness. He went on to regret making promise but fullfilled it.
