Boy, did Phantom Canyon bring back sweet memories I thought I'd forgotten. My folks took me down the road in our brand new 1956 Chevrolet Belaire. I was 12 and my love of overland travel began there, thanks to parents with a love of adventure. We looked for the "phantom" around every corner. Now I drive my 2013 4Runner listening to that same lady give me directions. She's everywhere! Thanks for taking me along.

+Bill Sprague Wow, that is so amazing, Bill! Can't tell you how much we appreciate you sharing this with us! We might have even teared up just a little bit... Hey just curious, what were legends your parents shared with you about the trail? I read a lot of things online but the stories seem to conflict a lot. Thanks again!
@BillSprague7 жыл бұрын
Lifestyle Overland All we knew was what I read in the "True West" magazines I picked up along the way. They just decided to take the canyon road out of Cripple Creek. I remember we encountered a couple of Army convoys apparently from Fort Carson. The old rail line must have been the location for a bunch of train robberies. I'll do some digging now that you have convinced me I have to take the Enchanted Rockies Trail. I'll be the solo guy in the truck camper who's not in a hurry. LOL! I'll keep you posted on what I dig up. The "True West" magazines are long gone. I'll look through my Dad's slides to see if I can turn up some pictures..

I would suggest Cripple Creek days. It was written by a colorado college professor who came to Cripple Creek via Kansas. Her father was a prospector and she tells story to traveling to Cripple Creek via Phantom canyon in a stage coach which was held up by bandits. The entire book is full of mining lore and legend.

The trail is a dead end, back tracking is a must however the sights are worth it. The whole trip is only a couple of hours. I used to go from there to the Caribou Trail and mud lake, which is only 20 minutes from there with 2 trails 4x4 only. 1 trail leads you to rainbow lake camping area and Colorado university arctic research center. I only have a 4 and a half inch lift with stock 32" tires from a 2015 wrangler. I had no problems getting through.

We enjoy Phantom Canyon Road, even though it isn't at all challenging unless covered in ice and snow. It's a shame Gold Camp Road was closed when you came through, there are some really nice views along that road. Great video, thanks for sharing.
@LifestyleOverland8 жыл бұрын
+Wayne Young It really is a simple and enjoyable trail. We had a blast on it, just wished we had caught the aspens in their prime. I still would like to try and find an alternative route on gold camp. The guy seemed very knowledgeable and even said he tried taking his jeep around it on some forest roads with no luck. If we had more time I might have given it a shot.
@wayneyoung508 жыл бұрын
On the east side of Woodland park is Forest Service Road 300 (Rampart Range Road), and it goes from Colorado Springs north to nearly Denver. You could have picked it and gone south to the Springs. It's easy going like Phantom Canyon, but has many trails off of it, and many are quite challenging. Camping spots are everywhere along there. Check out traildamage.com if you're interested in returning.

Your 4runner is an excellent choice, being a platform relative of the FJ, Land Cruiser Prado and Lexus GX. Your edition is essentially the best equipped Toyota factory vehicle besides the FJ Trail Editions. I actively contemplate an older used boulevard GX as my cost-effective overland build. Or 15 year old diesel right-hand drive Prado from Japan. Nice to see this vehicle works for you!

I binged watched your videos today while I was home with a sick 12yo. First off, thank you for make my the videos. They are wonderful. And hats off to your daughter for being a good co-pilot... I wouldn't for a moment think all kids could be that calm for 5 or 6 days. Did you carry, do you plan to carry any personal protection with you along your trips? While I loved the videos I couldn't help but be worried the whole time. To many people looking to take advantage of good people in a compromised situation. I don't think I've ever wanted a Toyota 4Runner more then I do right now. Thank again for great videos.
@LifestyleOverland7 жыл бұрын
+william stodgel Hey thanks for watching! Sorry to hear your kiddo is under the weather 😕. Our girl is truly an awesome traveler but trust me, she has her moments just as any kid would! As to the personal protection; that's a choice everyone has to make based on their area of travel, local laws, and abilities. They best form of protection we've found is traveling with others. When that's not an option, we step up our situational preparedness. I'm thinking we might need to start getting commission on some 4Runners 😉. We have had multiple folks buy one after watching these videos, haha! Such a great platform!

Thanks for taking the time to upload the content including the mapped trails using Gaia. One day I will def be using this for my overland experience. Would my 4x4 Silverado handle most of these trails in around the nice season? Which months did you guys go? Thanks! Subbed
@LifestyleOverland7 жыл бұрын
+soundlive7 Hey you're welcome! Thanks for watching! Your Silverado would probably handle most of these trails, especially if you have any lift and larger tires. The trickiest parts would be in New Mexico but there are several fun bypass routes if you had to go around certain areas. We traveled this route the first 2 weeks of September which worked out great. We might go later in September next time to catch the Aspen trees in full swing.

Could you please explain your decision process as to why you haven’t replaced the OEM bumpers with steel aftermarket bumpers? Most overlanders do this but your rig remains OEM. Appreciate your thoughts! I’m in between getting an FJ Cruiser and 4Runner

the only problem with the 4runner is that after you "mod it" the rig just becomes anemic. I had a 2015 trail edition with an icon stage 5 lift, shockrocks rear bumper and sliders and a prinsu rack with the same SSS front bumper and the truck just didn't have much power left and not to mention the gas mileage went to about 14 mpg. Traded it in for a full size truck. I do miss the 4runner from time to time as it looks so good with all the mods i did to it.
@LifestyleOverland6 жыл бұрын
We re-geared to 4.88's and it's like a rocketship compared to before. Great for towing. Still low gas mileage but it's not built for saving the earth, just enjoying it ;)

You make a good narrator, maybe you should get a job with the travel channel doing this! Enjoying your content very much and looking forward to watching many more. I just bought a 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road for hitting the trails as well, hoping to enjoy this lifestyle!

Thanks, we really appreciate that! Hope to see that Tacoma on the trail one day!

How much time do you spend setting up and taking the videos during an average day? Not talking about the time it takes editing the videos.

+Jeffrey Schwartz Honestly it's very little time when you have a driver. I would say we add 10% to our total travel time worst case, so about an hour to hour and a half of filming per day. We are learning when to snag shots that work in the videos vs. when to leave it alone because it either uninteresting or bad lighting so that helps with total time too. Obviously it takes an exponential amount of time when you have to set the tripod, drive by, run back, pick it up, etc. I usually don't film much when I'm on a solo mission.

Question, what sort of lift do you have on your rig? Do you have a build thread of everything you have modified and added to your 4Runner?
@LifestyleOverland7 жыл бұрын
+Brooke Bruno We run an ICON Stage 2. Here's the build thread: overlandbound.com/forums/threads/2014-4runner-te-momma-bear-build.59/#post-673

How long did you take to plan?
@LifestyleOverland6 жыл бұрын
We spent about 30-40 or so hours of investigation and routing over 3 months.

Do you or have you done any 4x4 on these journeys? Any tricky parts?
@LifestyleOverland7 жыл бұрын
Emeka Ossai Weather is the wild card on this trail. There are only a few rough spots, mostly in New Mexico. But all that can change if there is rain or snow on the trail. It's best to go with a capable 4WD vehicle and a decent collection of recovery gear (traction mats, winch, etc.) just in case.

you called your voice navi "SIRI" if I'm not mistaken, but it's not Google Maps? Also what do you use for mapping exploration? I'd love to do a personal chat on hangouts or something. Thanks.

+s0uLjah That was Google maps which we use for paved road travel. Gaia GPS is our primary navigation app and when paired with their Pro online account makes for a powerful planning tool.
