now that you mentioned that in your video i want to give you some more details on the display technology and what amazon might do different. the display market is basically controlled by one company (E-INK) and Kobo/Amazon and others all get their displays from this company. Kobo currently uses the "E-INK Kaleido 3" Displays for their color devices, they are standard b&w displays with a color filter layer on top of it (the extra color layer on top makes the whole thing look darker and grainy) E-INK also has/had another color display called "E-INK Gallery 3", instead of a color filter on top this technology uses colored particels instead of just black ones. this allows for better color saturation and better contrast compared to Kaleido 3. However this technology works sadly very slow and it takes a lot of time to turn pages, that's why currently no company is using this display in their devices. in an annual report earlier this year, e-ink announced a upgraded version of gallery 3 for some time in 2024 and its currently rumored that amazon might use these new displays for their new ereaders. However this is just a rumor and e-ink hasn't yet presented the new displays and amazon could also just use Kaleido 3

Long time Kindle reader here. I bought the new Clara BW instead of the Colour, because I didn’t want to compromise on the reading experience (I never read comics or manga, so crisp text is what is most important). Went with the Kobo because I got sick and tired of waiting for Amazon to bring out a small e-reader with warm lighting. As much as I like my larger Kindles, the 6-inch form factor just can’t be beat for portability and convenience when out and about. The Clara BW is now my most-used e-reader! It’s not perfect (perfection lies somewhere in between a Kindle and a Kobo), but I like it. A lot!

I bought the Clara Colour and I love it! The color screen doesn't bother me because I'm not OCD about it, and I don't read comics or Manga on it. I bought it for books and since it has the 300 ppi it's plenty sharp enough for me.

this is my first ereader, and honestly the integration with calibre + blue light/red light stuff is what matters most. Zero complaints about the screen considering I'm mostly just reading text off epubs with it.

It is a choice, Clara BW which has by now one of the best BW e-ink screens. Super sharp. Or, colors! And I have see some OLDER color e-ink that you probably wouldn't like. It works but it Kobo was smart to wait till better options came along.I I have a 7" Kobo color screen and I like it, even yes with its muted colors and yes slight haze.

My old Kindle Paperwhite is starting to show it's age with a dying battery, so I've been considering replacing it. Since Amazon seems to be deadset on getting lazier, more expensive and providing worse service, I am considering this Kobo colour. I'll probably wait for the next gen like you suggest, since my Kindle still has a little life left in it.

I think a colour kindle would have the same issues. The screen door effect is because there is a screen of colour filters overlayed onto of the e-ink screen, and it absorbs a part of the light that would otherwise bounce back. The alternative technology is gallery 3, but devices with this don't seem to be coming out.

I got one a while back and like it a lot. It has been my main reader since I got it. I have most models (kindle, kobo, nook, pocketbook) and this one is my favorite at the moment. Prior to that my favorite was the Kobo Libra H2O, so I guess that’s not too much of a surprise. 😊. I don’t notice the darker screen or the “screen door effect” at all. Maybe I’m just blind LOL. Very happy with it.

I really enjoyed your video. I did not expect you to (kind of) touch on sociolinguistics: 4:58. Also, your (again unexpected) book reference, got me very interested in the book. I am not convinced that I should buy a color e-ink device yet, though. I will probably endure without it until the next color technology comes along. For now, black and white e-ink is just fine.

This was my first ever Kobo. I am a Kindle user really, but wanted to try the colour eink technology. I thought this would be a fad, but I haven't put it down, reading books from my local library. Really the colour low pass filter is the issue, and I just found I have to turn up the brightness in some situations..

I'm also excited about the colour e-ink technology. But for reading comics, having sizes starting at 9-inch displays would be preferable for me. For reading books only, black and white is arguably better atm. Also, I love Children of Time as well :)

I have the kobo libra 2 And i love it When they announced the kobo libra colour i was tempted to switch because i do like comic books But i ended up keeping my kobo and reading comic books on my tablet And seeing as this color e-ink technology has a way to go i think i made the right choice Also...you said the case from kobo is cheaply made while i argee with you i had a thrid party case and the sleep/wake up fuction did not work properly at the end of the day when i wanted to read the kobo was dead because the case kept waking up the kobo Ended up getting the official case and no problem with battery drain

The first 5 minutes of LTT's video "The worst monitor ever... in color!" about the Dasung Paperless color e-ink monitor (yes, really!), goes in depth into WHY the color version is much less bright and less sharp than its colorless sibling. Definitely worth a watch.

I'm now having to read some cooking books in English that I only find on Amazon and it was surprising for me when I checked these books on the Kindle app of my phone and found out how colourful they are even in epub format

Out of the trilogy, the first book (Children of Time) is the best. It’s my favourite sci-fi of all time. The second book is great, just not as good as the original. The third instalment is the weakest. I did not dislike it, but it was a bit of a slog to read through to the end, and a bit disappointing if I’m being completely honest. That said, Children of Time = perfection 👌

Yea, for manga I think an ipad would be better. But for books you can just convert them to epub and read on kobo

I wouldn't recommend colour e-ink for comics. Since most manga is black and white, you'll be better served by a conventional e-reader!

Thank you! I would like to switch to Kobo from the Kindle (so I can read library books) and am undecided between the Clara Colour and the Clara BW. Although I read mostly fiction books, I'm very tempted by the colors and especially by the more powerful processor of the Colour. However, someone says that under direct sunlight the Colour is much harder to read than a black and white ereader. Can you confirm this? Thank you very much again for sharing your experience. I wouldn't say it's much harder to read, that feels like a bit of an exaggeration. I'd say, at most, it's noticeable if you have lots of experience with e-ink, and especially in the first couple of days from the switch. I can frankly say I don't have any discomfort reading it at the beach, for instance. But I'm sure that if I pick up my old Clara, I'll spot the difference immediately!

I hate kobo branded cases. I had one for my first kobo and it was terrible, fell apart a month after getting it. I have always looked at 3rd party cases. I have either bought custom-made ones off Etsy (expensive but pretty) or I have been able to find one on Amazon (cheaper). Since I don't read a ton of comics and just bought the Clara 2e not that long ago I don't think that I will be buying the new color one. Maybe I'll look at the 2nd edition when it comes out.

I'm finding that it's pretty close to my original Clara. That being said -- I never really stayed on top of battery consumption with these devices. So it's hard to say exactly. Since you'll likely be using the light in situations where you wouldn't with the original Clara, I'm sure this gets slightly worse battery life, but the difference (at least to me) seems mostly negligible.

Kind of disappointed in the Clara Colour. It's hard to read on the bus in the sun which is where I do a lot of my reading. My Clara 2E or Kindle Paperwhite way better.

Not sure what the hype is about all those new color e-readers, which mushroomed overnight, but apparently they're the thing of the present and evidently here to stay. I don't read comic books, so I don't care so much about colors, but if I did, I'd probably stick to the iPad. The quality is way superior. As for reading books, it is ultimately about reading and enjoying books, so I'm planning to stick to my good ol' Kobo Libra 2, which is an awesome device, and plow through enough books already uploaded there that will last me a while. If someone doesn't have a "black-and-white" device yet, maybe a color e-ink one is a viable option. Maybe? However, the real cool news in your video, quite frankly, is that you're in Brazil now. I absolutely love and miss Brazil. I've been there three times already! The culture, music, language, people, nature, and food! Um pão de queijo para mim, por favor? And if a caipirinha accompanies it, I'm a happy camper already 😄 Até à próxima.

I was wondering if the contrast would be different from the Black and white version. Hearing this, I would stick with the black and white. The main issue with e-ink displays vs paper is they still don't have the greatest contrast.

I'm a big fan of the Boox devices. They run Android so you can install all apps you want. Just be careful you do not install distracting apps 🙈.
