First, I want to thank you for sharing your work on this site. I have been playing for a few years now and watched many viedos while learning this instrument. Your teaching and playing abilities, I found, to be the best ones around and I must say that you play with the sound very well. Thank you again. Best of luck. Ali from San Francisco CA

Very nice...I like what you do. E-mailed Dwight Lind last night and he said to come here to listen to the key of F#. Like others I wanted to hear a lower scale flute and make a key decision.The sounds of these instruments sooth my soul.I work with his "step son" ? Stoney, so this is a nice connection. Your work also confirms to me that I`m on the right track and am excited to get the ball on the road. F#...yes!!

Much appreciated! I distinctly remember this as being quite a blissful moment. I thank Quiet Bear (Dwight Lind) for offering these great flute kits. Much credit must go to him.

Thanks for your nice comment! I'd say start off with an F# & take it from there. CAUTION: Once bitten by the flute bug, you may find yourself overtaken by an uncontrollable urge to buy flutes in many different keys & by many makers... you've been warned... hehe! As for trilling or doing flutter tongue effects: everyone's abilities in these areas are different. You'll find there are things you can & can't do. Don't sweat it; what matters is that you'll still have your own voice on the flute.

Wow, this piece is just absolutely delightful, Bruce! Very uplifting. About a year ago I bought a High Spirits flute A (been spamming my channel with flute videos since. lol) and have been finding your videos very inspirational, both in your playing as well as representing the different flutes. Helped me to say yes to a pocket flute, too, since you showed it can sound lovely despite the high pitch. haha. So, yeah, finally decided to comment and say thank-you for your presence here on YT and spreading the "good fluting vibes". A wonderful addiction these flutes, yes? :)
@AllenBruceRay11 жыл бұрын
I feel very humbled by your kind words ~ much gratitude here! Actually, this flute would be fine for a beginner. People usually start with the keys of either A, G, or F#. Of these three, the F# is lowest in pitch. It is also longer though still quite manageable if you have average length arms and medium-sized hands. This one was a kit, so I had to shape it by hand and put a shellac finish on it, but it was WELL worth the effort!

@aguacun Thx for such a wonderful comment! A lot of people seem to connect with this tune, which is 100% improvised. Sometimes these things just happen. That's why I take a camera & tripod with me when I go out to play my flute in a tunnel, etc. That way, I can capture these moments. I'm very grateful that my Muse hover over me at such times. You are correct that the main purpose of the Native American flute is to play your own songs from your own heart, so please do that with your KK! ~ Peace

+Black Gallagher Good question. Quiet Bear retired from flute making, so he doesn't have these kits anymore. However, you can get the same kind of kites from Stellar Flutes: www.stellarflutes.com/pretuned-kits.html

This is one of the best performances I've seen on YT. Your flute playing is magical, simultaneously whimsical and contemplative, playful and spiritual. If this was improvised you must improvise some more and please post it on YT. I'll be watching out for it. BTW, I am really torn now between buying a bass D or an F# Native American flute. Before watching your video I was leaning toward getting the bass D but after hearing you play this piece in F# now I'm torn again!

Rey, thank you so much for your heart-felt compliments and comments! Believe me when I tell you that I'm deeply humbled by them. As for your F#/D dilemma, either of those would be an equally great choice. Most people who get serious about the NAF will want to get several flutes in different keys anyway. This tune was indeed an improvisation, and I agree with you that I should keep on improvising on video. The vast majority of what I do here on YT is in fact improvised; it's a sort of never-ending challenge to myself to come up with something from nothing in the moment and capture it for others to hear how these instruments inspire me. So far, I have well over 450 videos, so there are quite a few there to listen to already. I've not been making these videos with any regularity for the past few years for a variety of reasons. One is that I would prefer to play outdoors, but the places I want to play in are all unavailable, and right now it's about 18 degrees Fahrenheit - way too cold for these poor wooden flutes and my poor old fingers! I prefer places of solitude, but those are rather hard to come by in a densely-populated place like South Korea (the town I live in has close to 300,000 inhabitants.) I will gladly play indoors, but the conditions need to be right for that, too: proper lighting, the time to record, wife out of the house so as not to bother her or impede the process, etc. Yet another reason is that musically, I felt that over the years I was just repeating myself and playing a lot of the same phrases in the same style. No doubt that that comes largely out of playing solo. I feel a need to branch out and do more with other musicians and instruments such as drums, percussion, guitar, etc. To do those, I'd need to either hook up with someone else with similar proclivities and available free time, or do it all myself. Doing it all myself has its advantages, but it would take more time than I can give to it right now, and again, it would still be more or less all one flavor. Really, at this point, I'd want to work with other people. It's better to bounce musical energy off of other musicians because that is really where the excitement of the moment can take things into another realm. The whole being greater than the sum of the parts and all that... Just some thoughts inspired by your comments. Anyway, I than you again and wish you luck on your flute journey. Peace ~ Bruce

Allen Bruce Ray. Artists feed off of each other and this is as it should be. When I get good enough with the flute I'd love the chance to play alongside other musicians. Otherwise, like you, I would prefer to play at a time when my wife is not in the house. But I am fortunate in that I own several acres of property in a secluded wooded area, far from other people, so I can always venture into the woods in my own backyard and play the flute to my heart's content without having to worry about bothering other people. There is a lovely stream in my backyard where I intend to play. I think the beauty of the woods, the sound of the stream, and the singing of the birds will inspire my flute playing. There are many hawks where I live. I hope I can mimick their cries with the flute, as well as the songs of other birds. But this will all have to wait until Springtime because lately the temperature here has been freezing and I'm sure the cold is no good for the flute. I have been warned that playing the flute in cold weather results in excessive condensation inside the flute (more condensation than usual) and so I'd have to be shaking it out constantly. No, no playing in the cold. I spent $225 on this flute, so you can believe I'll be taking good care of it. I ended up buying a red cedar Dm flute. I decided to start with that and, when I'm ready for another flute, the F# will join my collection.

Thank you, Rey, for your insight. It would be nice to have my own place just as you do, but I'm grateful for what I DO have, and I need to use it to better effect. I fully expect to be more active in NAF matters this year. Thanks for helping me to kick-start that! Peace ~ Bruce
