You can buy an Asian region (multi-language) physical copy from plenty of different online retailers. It's the exact same package as the standard physical that was square Enix store only, minus an esrb label. And it's in English by default on any English region switch because it sets the language based on system settings.

I like how Steam handles online games, but not so much the consoles. And that's not even getting into things like Nintendo's online virtual console system.

Switch version has no problems, it continues to be widely available. For some reason the PS4 version is restricted to the Square Enix store.

The Play-Asia version is Asian territory but it had multiple languages such English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Russian, Thai, and Tagalog. Depending on what account you use, the game will use that region's specific language. If you bought only the NA version then English is all you get regardless of which region you're in.

Wanna hear something painful? When the Pixel Remaster Collection physical dropped, it was really late at night and I had a chance to get it. I knew I had four other friends who would also be interested in it, so I let them know and told them we should order together to save money on Square Enix's overpriced shipping charges. They were all asleep, so I got no responses. Still, I figured that there was enough supply to last a while. By the time morning came around, they pretty much all individually told me that money was a bit tight so they were gonna hold off. No problem, right? I'll just order by myself then. So, I checked the site again and they were sold out. Turns out I waited for no reason and had nothing to show for it. To boot, I was planning on getting the PS4 version, so when I decided to settle for the Asia English version and they announced that their PS4 version got cancelled, it was a double whammy. Eventually I caved in and bought the Asia English Switch version and I'm happy with it, but I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't rather have that North American PS4 version. 😂

I would have loved to get the PS4 version as well, but even had I known about it, SQEX's store doesn't ship to Australia. So I had to order it for the Switch from Playasia (there were local copies, but I had been told that the PAL versions may be part on-card, part DLC voucher, and I ain't paying $160 for anything digital).

Let’s not forget the international PS4 physical we canceled, and when these went up for sale in the US, it was shadow dropped when most people were in bed, and everyone woke up to learn they were sold out.

They don't just act that way, they have the numbers and the shift towards digital is massive. We're talking more than 10% every year. Sony reported out of the 2.2 trillion Y from software sales 1.9 trillion were digital. Thats up by 17% from last year. ($14.1bn total/ $12.1bn digital) We'll reach the situation where it's no longer profitable to print any non collectors edition copies pretty soon.

PC gaming is very big and they haven't had physical games for years. I prefer console gaming, in part, because of the physical aspect. I'm not sure I'd commit to a digital only platform. At that point, I'd just start playing games on PC.

Remember, this is the same company that released Chrono Cross digitally (PSN?) and then shortly afterward revoked everyone's access claiming the license to play had expired 30 years before the PS1 version's original release date.

I have a similar issue with Dragon Quest. I would love to play the other games since I LOVED DQXI, but most of them are impossible to get without emulation or spending hundreds of dollars for a DS game.

The same problem is apparent with GameCube, where there are a lot of games like fire emblem that are ridiculously expensive. I feel like I have to pawn off every sacred relic in my local church in order to afford some of those.

Aside from the Switch collection of the first three games, as far as mainline games go (since there's spinoffs like Monsters and Builders), everything is pretty much near-impossible to get

@@jj_grabes Collecting 3DS games is terrible if you're a PAL gamer - last time I checked each of the 3DS MegaTen games were over AU$300 for a PAL version. But yeah, Nintendo platforms are horrible to collect for because their good third party games seem to become hard to find a month after their initial release. Even buying games for the Switch feels as painful as buying games for the PS Vita!

I also have a beef with some of the "quality of life" features. Consumable weapons (arrows) are now just limitless. Doesn't seem to matter which hand you equip the bows and arrows with. Little details like that. Not to mention the win 4x button, which I guess you could ignore. But it also saves in every room. Takes the suspence out of it, and tempts the player unnecessarily to use it if something goes wrong. Totally outside the spirit of the original experience. I am glad I got to play III finally (and II, for that matter), but I feel like I still probably didn't get the original experience. I still think it's good, but it really could have been at least great, and it's not great.

@@fishingmule3266 That's cause they are just phone ports. I remember they launch a trailer for these games a few years ago and the only two platforms they had for it are phones and PCs. They took a page from lazy Sega (Sonic Origins Collection) and Rockstar (GTA Trilogy: Definitive Collection) and just port phones versions of these games to consoles instead which had terrible results. These didn't came to Switch and PS4 until many years after the mobile and PC versions had their release.

I buy digital only. I have once commented to an indie game developer that they don't need to waste time creating a physical box release specifically because we see every single time that they like to do a simultaneous physical and digital release. For an indie developer or very small team, handling a physical release can take hundreds of man hours to negotiate and prepare. For indie games, it results in release delays and it allows a procrastinating developer to retreat from game development and instead focus on the box art or manual for a game that isn't being worked on. This is just what humans do. Square Enix is NOT a small company, they have entire departments dedicated to creating physical releases and promotional material, so I would never tell them to skimp on the physical release.

Companies want mostly digital copies because it's cheaper for them to make. But heck with the psn store. Those old games (5 or 7) year old games gor $50. When i can get a used physical copy for $20. I was shocked when i saw some of the prices for older games there. I would just go to GameStop. I only buy digitally games if there's no other option or the game is on sell. Like there's 75% of deals (but i have the fear it will be removed one day when i wake up).

Agreed. The digital marketplace allows sellers to bypass the laws of supply and demand and deny gamers the right of ownership (including the right to sell no longer wanted goods on their own terms) yet charge full price. People can have their digital libraries if they prefer, but even if I have to spend more importing physical games from Asia or America, I still think theirs is the more foolish choice.

SE sold their stock, and they don't care if it was to scalpers or fans. It sure feels like they have abandoned us these past few years. I'd like a copy, and would be willing to pay a decent amount for it only because, now, there's no other way to buy it, but I SE really pissed me off with how they did this, releasing it in the middle of the night to little fanfare. I found out it existed from an article that was complaining about the exact same thing I just mentioned! Why did SE release this, online only, in the dead of night, with barely any news that it was a thing? Lame. Maybe they needed to save cash to buy more $12,000 Terra statues?🤔

Oh, I didn't know megaman had that situation in the US. I was extremely salty that there was no physical in europe for it cuz it was super popular in the 2000s in europe due to the show airing in most languages in europe. But I lived in japan at the time so I got that copy which was fine. But I was mad on principle. It just reeked of the lack of market analysis. And Capcom has been doing this in Europe for a while, not giving us physical releases (like ace attorney onimusha etc). And I am furious every time. They did this with FF7 interlude for the PS5 too. Hopefully they'll actually reprint both for the holiday season if they were smart.

That whole situation sucked. I had the PS4 version of Remake and used it to update to the PS5 version. It wouldn't let me buy the Interlude DLC, however. The store said "unavailable." I tried to find workarounds but nothing worked. So I decided to buy the PS5 "Integrade" physical. But that was out of print, meaning I had to buy a used copy. Fine, I can still pay extra money for the DLC. Nope. It was still listed as unavailable. I had to buy the digital Deluxe version to finally be able to access the DLC. So I paid another $20 (it was on sale) to finally play the Yuffie content. Such BS.

​@drewtheunspoken3988 they still have the yuffie weapon dlc for 10 bucks as well. At a point in rebirth you can have every weapon you obtained in remake to display on a wall in rebirth. But if you didn't pre order and get the weapon dlc or purchase it will not show up on the wall.

I am so sorry to hear this. I'm a huge Switch fan so last year I got the PlayAsia copy for that system as a treat for myself not too long after I traded in a bunch of stuff at a pop culture store with a gaming section to get a Switch for only $10 cash. This year my manager at work gave me her old PS4 as she got a PS5 for Christmas and I love it but I prefer the Switch because I'm a Nintendo fan plus I love the portability of it so I only buy PS4 exclusives or games that are more expensive on the Switch. I know the feeling when you can't get a game you really want and the company won't make it available.

But I highly doubt you'd be someone who advocates that then that the other option shouldn't exist for people who want it, and I think those are the people we have an issue with in this discussion, because there are unfortunately a lot of them. Both of these types of media should be an option for who they are convenient for.

This decision boggles my mind as well, especially when they are hurting so badly for money. $3,000? It's cheaper to buy a Switch and this game. It's even better than since the Switch is portable and a physical disk exists. Only a chump would pay that anywhere that price!

I buy digital for a lot of games now because I'm concerned a physical game's copies may run out in a week or two for some titles and that they'll never do reprints again to allow gamers that choice. Better to at least have a downloaded copy rather than always hope and pray you can purchase a special edition/standard edition for one game later. It's sad to see, but if companies keep doing this then you're really just shoved into digital purchases like bullying.

That is insane what square is doing. Wearing an eye-patch and a big hat with a skull on it is the way to go to play these classic games in my opinion. I don't see why I should give anyone, including square, this much money when I can play them free

The Square/Enix wants to show investors the game sold out argument makes no sense. Shareholders just care about revenue and profits. Something like this an investor would look at and say “why the hell aren’t you selling more copies of this?”. The digital push doesn’t make much sense either, I’m not exact on the physical numbers but, I think the publisher (Square/Enix) would keep about 50% of what a retail (in store) game brings in (not sure if that accounts for manufacturing cost), while digital they’d take home 70%, standard platforms fee’s usually 30%. Either way, Square/Enix is losing out on sales from people who only want physical, or digital buyers willing to double dip. There’s no reason to do this other than to appease rarity collectors, and that makes no sense from a business standpoint, especially if you’re revenue is down! It all comes back to Why? (Edit) 17:30 Honestly made to order might not work, manufactures require a certain number of games to be printed, and the larger the batch, the bigger the discount per disc/cartridge. That being said, they could always do a re-print and take pre-orders. Larian Studios is doing that with the physical of Boulders Gate 3, in quarterly run batches on their website.

I didn't even know they did that. I wonder what the point of that would even be. Obviously I believe you, but that's such a silly decision. Were you able to install a third-party utility to force controller support? I know that they exist on pretty much every platform where you can make it think you're using a keyboard anyway, but just use a controller. Xpadder is one program I've used in the past on PC to help with that.

Square-Enix really is a mess with final fantasy and they show that they are a) very desorganized or b) very insecure with their management., i mean Final Fantasy 8 got a WEIRD european physical release for the ps4, but they released just the single game... while FF 7 got released with 8 but only for the switch, all the ps1 FF were released on the playstation store digital only, why?, who decided that in square-enix?., is stupid, and why the FF 13 trilogy didn´t got a release?., i mean it is a great trilogy, yes those games are more "cinematic rpgs" but are tight and polished games with great presentation, i´m more than glad with what they did with the kingdom hearts, Nier, FF 10 and 12, but they are kinda a mess with the classics, they should release the whole compilation of FF in one package, i mean that´s why Nomura and Nojima made FF 7 Remake story to hint all the compilation stuff, so they could re-released it, Crisis core remaster was great but how about before crisis? and the others?

This is why I hate Square Enix this generation and their many asinine decisions: 1. Launch Final Fantasy: The Pixel Remastered as phone and PC exclusives with worst text fonts, and they then later launch in the console version limited physical quantity and in limited places, still with terrible text fonts. They finally only change it when enough complaint came through. 2. Never release Dragon Quest Heroes 1 & 2 the Switch version to NA, heck those games already had English translation in the other versions, there's no reason they couldn't just patch those translation to the Switch version. 3. Refuse to natively port Kingdom Hearts Collection 1 & 2 to Switch, instead we got cloud versions which nobody ask for. KH3 I could understand if that one was via cloud but the rest they had no excuses other than laziness. This decision also ruin Sora's appearance in Smash Bros. Ultimate cause a lot of gamers who were excited for him eventually were not due to the KH cloud games. 4. Refused to release Dragon Quest XI the 3DS version for NA. This version was already finished and just need localization but nope instead Square Enix want to release just the Switch version only which took an additional year to launch. At that time there are still thousands of 3DS owners are who would had been excited for that game. 5. Purposely litter Chocobo GP with micro transactions, heck the game isn't even a free to play game so why they thought that was a good idea is anyone's guest. 6. Still refusing to make a third Chrono game, now that Akira Toriyama had come to pass, there will never be a Chrono game like Chrono Trigger anymore. 7. They troll the Parasite Eve fans with the Genesis Symbiote NFT thing which made them lose a lot of fans after that slog failed. 8. Made too many terrible and garbage live service games: Marvel's Avenger, Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier, Babylon's Fall, Forspoken, Balan Wonderworld (technically Yuji Naka's fault but SE know better to tell him to fix his game), etc. 9. They fucked up the multiplayer in Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles. Yes having online multiplayer is okay but the fuck up part is that online play doesn't function the same as the multiplayer in the GameCube original where every player at the end of a quest would get equal rewards, instead only the host got all the stuff at the end of each quest. 10. They are attempting to turn Final Fantasy VII Rebirth into Chrono Cross by trying to create a multiverse between one another somewhere at the end of the game. 11. They port garbage versions (phone ports) of DQ1-3 on Switch and PS4. Now it looks like they are trying to make up for that by remaking every one of those three games. 12. They sell almost all of their western studios and IPs to Embracer Group which EG later killed. 13. They let Tri-Ace died after the released of Star Ocean: The Divine Force. 14. They made some odd spinoff games like an Octopath Traveler prequel, an FFVII remake again this time for phone, a Star Ocean mobile game, and a Dragon Quest mobile game starring Dai. All which had contents that you are required to spend real money in able to get far into each game. 15. They make a Splatoon ripoff (Foamstar), NiGHTS ripoff (Balan), and Baldur's Gate ripoff (The Diofield Chronicle). All which sold poorly. 16. They started last gen by embracing NFTs, A.I.s, micro transactions, live service games, cloud services, Sony, mobile platforms, and Marvel. All which lead to their downfall today. Now they are changing their tunes.

I was very lucky to be able to catch this when they went on sale. I left my copy sealed and is a jewel of my physical collection. That being said, I bought it to play it and ended up buying it again digitally to play. So they got almost $200 dollars out of me for this. Regardless, I agree with every point you made. There is absolutely not reason this should be so rare and so expensive. A reprinting needs to happen and I'm shocked it has not already.

Square Enix are just a f*cking awful company when it comes to physical rereleases (especially for their western customer base), often to the point of why they even bother. Here are a few examples: - Seiken Densetsu 2 (aka. Secret of Mana) for the PS Vita: Despite being an iconic SNES RPG, this game did not get an English language release anywhere in the world. - Legend of Mana for PS4: Despite releasing Seiken Densetsu 2 & 3 worldwide, the only way to get an English language version is to import from Asia. - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles HD for PS4: Despite being a remake of a GC game released internationally, this HD version is Japan only. - Final Fantasy 8 HD Remaster for PS4: Only released in Europe & Australia. - Final Fantasy 9 for Switch: Physical English release in Asia only. Releases in US/Europe/Australia are just DLC vouchers in a case. - Final Fantasy 10|10-2 HD Remaster for Switch: Western releases have FF10-2 and other content locked behind DLC vouchers, whereas the Japanese release has everything on the game card. The Japanese version has the same content (including language options) as the European version without requiring voucher bullshit. - Final Fantasy 15 Royal Edition for PS4: Australian and European versions are just the base FF15 disc with DLC vouchers for bonus content. Japanese & US versions have all content on disc.

I bought the Switch version because they were originally released on Nintendo's platforms and it just feels right playing them on Nintendo. That said, they shouldn't keep screwing up these releases and making them almost impossible to get. Fortunately, I do own most of them on the original platforms from when I was a kid, but to get them now will cost you thousands of dollars so it's just not practical or financially viable for many.

I wish they had put more work into them. They honestly feel like cheap remakes with some of the worst pixel work I've seen in the series. Like the PSP remasters Sometimes the art choice isn't flattering.

I want to bring up one factor that might happen that ff7 rebirth isn't the only game out there and that there are so many games out in the wild and even if people wanted it they probably either will get it later maybe when it goes on sale or when they finish whatever other game they were playing before. like my focus right now as of this comment is shin megami tensei 5 Vengence which comes out in 2 weeks. there have been so many games that have come out between vengences announcement to now and i have decided to skip them all cause i don't want to spend so much money buying games left and right.

Got the switch physical when it came out. Dont remember if it was play asia version or from amazon but it cost me like 80 quid I think. Worth it though. Great collection. Beat 1,2,3 and 4 so far. took a break half way through 5.

Eh, the remasters of 8 & 9 (and presumably 7) were fairly basic. Just an upscale that made things slightly blurry and replacing the text with a font that was clearer to read but didn't match the original and so stood out like dog's bollocks. And the original 4:3 aspect ratio leaving black bars on either side of the screen. At least the Pixel Remasters, while not perfect, made use of the extra screen real estate.

The remaster edition are all missing the extra dungeons, that's an easy $30 DLC for minimal effort and yet they don't capitalize on it... Mistakes all around!!

I prefer to own a physical copy. I wished all the psn games I bought on my PS3 was. I thought I could just redownload them on my PS4. It's the same account & the same bloody store. That game has some issues with graphics on ps5 so I can't imagine it having turned out good on ps4. That said you're right it affected the sales since many never upgraded.

PS5 currently has a 59 million install base. A PS4 version would have helped, but I don't know by how much. Other reasons are people waiting for a PC release or for all 3 parts to be out. There's also people who wanted a 1:1 remake and felt burned by the first part.

@@drewtheunspoken3988 Probably more than you think - 59M is just over HALF of the PS4's sales figures (106M, and that number's based on data almost five years old), meaning that if you assume all PS5 owners are former PS4 owners (unlikely, I know), that's still 47M+ consumers who haven't upgraded. I agree that many people felt burnt by part one, and not just because of the combat system, the bizarro world storyline and a lot of new out-of-place story/gameplay elements. And the fact that 7R was kinda crap. When FF7R was released for PS4, it was not clear whether it would be a part of a continuing series or not (the game ended in a way that assumed you knew the story of FF7). By the time SQEX announced that FF7R will be a trilogy, three years had passed and many who bought 7R for the PS4 found they wouldn't be able to play 7Rb without buying a PS5. I also agree that there's probably a portion of fans waiting for all three games to be out, as the time between 7R and 7Rb resulted in a generation gap, and the developers have stated that the third game will be the biggest in the trilogy, so who knows if the PS5 will still be the platform of choice for the final game?

EASY solution, how about a REQUEST to Square-Enix for them to print more copies? or to release another compilation that includes the rest of the games?., you know, there is no Mystic Quest there, a part 2 that includes part 1 but with all the spin-offs, Square-Enix were selling ps1 games from their store, they had so many copies of their latest ps1 one games that, i shit you not, till the latest years they were still selling sealed ps1 games from their own digital store, if that is the case why to try to reach the company and ask them to print more copies of some of their releases? to avoid this kind of BS ?

Square Enix falls in the same camp of develops like Ubisoft, Activision and Electronic Arts, where there is a clear agenda with not only how they develop games but how they distribute them. They genuine couldn't care less about their fanbase, there is just corporate greed and now woke agenda they try to push. I am also a gamer who only buys physical media and refuse to buy digital games, which is the direction they are trying to push the industry, simply to save a few bucks on distribution. This decision, however, was truly asinine as they could produce another batch of physical copies on the PS4/PS5, they just choose not to.

You and I are clearly buying different games. There are some games that are DLC-in-a-box (FF9 for Switch in EU/AU/US), and there are some that are physical games but part of the content is DLC-locked (FF10|10-2 for Switch in EU/AU/US, Bayonetta 1+2 for Switch, Metal Gear Solid Collection for PS4). For many of these, you can get a true physical release by importing from another region (especially Asia), so don't just apathetically accept anti-consumer business practices.
