I don’t think I’ve ever talked about this before 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’m so curious if anyone else with lung issues does the same thing!

The Frey Life Yes - I have aspergillosis and bronchistasis. For me it keeps cold or hot air at more control of hitting my broncs tickling me or gagging me into a coughing fit . It also is me trying to limit a lung full of air gulped in and realizing last second it’s too much and will trigger coughing spell

Yes! I've got Tracheabronchomalacia, dyskinesia and COPD. I "learned" this trick myself after I had more and problems with coughing and keeping my airway open. I also try to breathe through my nose when I can't stop coughing. That sometimes helps too. And pursed lip breathing helps also to control my breath, but it's useless in a coughing fit.

I know this is tmi. When I'm having severe menstruating cramp I will breath that way. It helps me concentrate on the breathing then the pain.

I've definitely done that type of breathing to avoid coughing. It sounded very familiar. Not having to do it daily thankfully! I usually only get asthmatic coughing fits in the morning or during exercise or if I have an airway infection. But if I need to cough when I am somewhere quiet or if I'm too tired to keep coughing I'll do that thing. So it's recognizable from my experience with asthma :)

It’s so wonderful to see you guys doing the absolute best for Ollie-not that you wouldn’t!-but I’ve seen tons of youtuber’s-especially in the US, not restraining their dogs in their car-I know it’s not law in the US, but it is here in Australia. If god forbid you have an accident, an unrestrained pupper can do horrendous damage to themselves, or their humans in the car with them. It’s a horrible, terrible thought, but proven in research that in the event of an accident, it’s better for everyone in the car-animal & human for ur pupper to be restrained❤️

I'm familiar with big moves, at 15 my family moved from Canada to Italy and I remember it as a very stressful time for all of us. Plus I found out a year later that my health problems were due to cf, which I had never heard of before that. Be sure to get enough rest to keep up your strength. Best wishes for your new future together! ❤️

I have chronic asthma and recently was diagnosed with vocal cord disfunction (VCD) which mimics asthma. It is not primarily treated with medication but with speech therapy. VCD is triggered by an allergen or stress and I end up with AWFUL coughing gagging fits! Way embarrassing☹️ In speech therapy, I learned how to relax my vocal cords/ throat to stop the coughing spells. And YOU do that too! My favorite is to open my jaw as wide as I can and then touch my chin to my neck- it works! Love your channel and your honestly about life with a chronic illness. 🤟 plus my husband is deaf so I appreciate your CC and ASL references (which are especially useful when one can’t breathe so great 😷).

Thanks guys for the memories given to us through these uploaded vlogs, and as a new chapter begin within " The Frey Life " novel, we'd be privileged and honored to be taken along for the journey, I'm anticipating the new arrival at your new home, may God richest bless it, and cover y'all his children with the power of the Holy spirit., this is a little late in coming but although they aren't initially any videos that'd display the knowledge in the packing of boxes, ironically there's the reverse method of unboxing, I know I know, it's weird but it's helpful - anyway, good positive vybz for the coming years ahead, prosperous and healthy health for you Mary, Peter and Ollie boy all the best, and take care. With having Asthma, I have always found I breathe like that when I'm out in the 'night air' That is a great trigger for 'kicking' my chest off. I find it helpful to hold a scarf, or some kind of cloth over my mouth so that the drastic change between warm and cold air (from inside the house, to outside) doesn't affect my breathing. I find myself breathing like you described through my scarf and therefore not ending up wheezing/coughing. I know it's different for you, but I totally get where you're coming from. Every tip tip will help somebody (I hope) Can't wait for tomorrow's Vlog. Lots of love x

One of the times you've been in the hospital or doing chest PT at home I noticed your breathing and how it's patterened. Working with a patterned breath is a technique learned through meditation or yoga that can also be very useful for anxiety and relaxation. For those with an trauma in there background we tend not to be angle to take full deep breathes as a result of being in a panicked or nervous state for long periods of time.

I have asthma, COPD, and suffer from what my father called “the Hillman Crud”. I have copious amounts of thick mucous I have to take meds, inhalers, oxygen, and aerosol treatments to try and get rid of my crud. Mom and Dad both had asthma. I didn’t know about pursed lip breathing, until I was in nursing school. “in through the nose, out through the mouth”. I call it my mantra. Remember Peter, no more saying, “you guys”, now it’s “y’all”, not you all, but y’all. Many prayers, and love, for the 3 of you

I was born at 25ish weeks gestation and was on a ventilator for nearly 3 months in the NICU. As such I just have some lung scarring and I was diagnosed in my teen years with athletic induced asthma. I do the pursed lip breathing thing you were talking about constantly. My boyfriend makes fun of me because he just thinks I'm breathing funny to be funny, but it's what my body naturally does. I find it easier to breathe that way :) So you're definitely not alone there haha.

Hey Mary,👋 I loved your question... I have lung issues due to being 3 months premature. Mostly when I am walking or doing anything with high intensity movement in it. So that’s why I can relate to pursing of the lips, that’s what I do when I am working out. It definitely makes it a little easier. Keep up all of the great work, love your videos so so so much... 💙 - kaitlyn (from Chicago)

I know that breathing technique-i do it involuntarily too-I have had tons of pulmonary embolisms-so the tissues in my lungs in certain spots have been starved of oxygen=have died in those spots, plus mild asthma. That was a nice video. Thanks for taking us with you. I didn't know you used a car leash on Ollie. I've often wondered if there is any evidence that it really protects your dog in an accident? Anyone here have any proof it will save a dog's life in an accident? They definitely restrict your dogs freedom of movement, so there is a trade off between their fun travelling and their safety. And of course there is the issue of air bags injuring them if they travel in the front passenger seat where most dogs prefer to be.

It applies a back pressure through the airways so they stay open through exhalation and Oxygen transfer continues instead of starting and stopping. It also (hopefully) helps to slow your breathing down a little and relax you. Hope that made sense.

I have COPD. I don't know if I do that back of the throat thing or not. I'll have to ask my husband if I my breathing is noisy some times. Pursed lip breathing is a common thing for me. It gives that positive pressure that helps bring the Oxygen saturation in my blood back up. Change of topic. Poor Ollie looked like his space was invaded by stuff. Such is the case when moving, every space counts. He really enjoyed that reassuring scratch under the head. 😀😀👋
