Good way to spend a day snowed in. Watching one of my favorite sword KZbinrs talking about an interesting weapon I never heard of before
@robertvondarth173011 сағат бұрын
My favourite sword ever. I have a sharp, and a blunt for HEMA It’s my primary practice sword. I only made a few mods… - Made a different handle that’s more like a knife/messer for better edge alignment feedback. Bent the thumb ring up slightly so it aligned with my thumb joint. Cold blued the entire thing. I’ll eventually change the edge angle on the sharp for the reasons you mentioned.

It's weird, but a dussack is considered a practice sword. I don't know why, as it is perfect doing the job of ending him rightly.

I would be super interested to see what that serpent sword could do if it were re-profiled. It's such a unique blade shape, and it would also be an awesome before and after video demonstrating your point on blade geometry.
@taylor_green_99 сағат бұрын
I'd like to see that too. I'm curious to see if the blade shape itself affects the cutting power, especially in comparison with regular wavy blades

@JT_Soul12 сағат бұрын
Great discussion of one of my favourite sword types. I would love to see you do a video on some swords you've purchased that had really good edges right out of the box. Not an overall look at the types of sword, handling, aesthetics, design, etc. - just highlighting some companies and products that you feel put a really good edge on their swords. It always surprises me that so many companies get so much right in their swords... but then fail to give them a proper edge. Hearing your impressions of some companies that you feel do their edges well would be very useful.

A sword from the Habsburg period in Europe.After a devastating war against the French who played a dubious role in Europe at that time ( haven't they always ? ) and the Ottoman Empire ,a period of relative tranquility set in. The Habsburg house established its reign. That reign was symbolic for it's practical governance and high taxes. One got a lot in return : one of the safest periods to live under a regime , as these rulers emphasized the keeping under control of robbers and bushwackers etc.This , among other things like better roads and circumstances for the economy to flourish , made the general population wealthier and better fed than before. One can even see the results in the skeleton's average height during a large part of this period. This was certainly true for the region i live in ( Flanders , Dutch speaking part of Belgium ) Then again , even today it's a region where men are among the tallest in Europe , together with the Dutch. The house of Habsburg turned out to be the longest and one of the most powerful reigns on mainland Europe. I'd like to think this blade is symbolic for their period.

@jimsmith896711 сағат бұрын
Man, I have had my eye on this piece for a minute and I'm so glad Skall did a review before I had the money saved up and pulled the trigger 😮 I love everything about this sword, the designs, the lines, the sharpened false edge..But the Edge grind being non-functional for a blade of this type is total deal killer.. This is a blade profile that should be capable of disemboweling a man and still mortally wounding one wearing an arming doublet or gambeson most likely.. Lanskinect -please- make a more functional version of this beautiful weapon! Stiffen the blade a bit, and start that grind closer to the spine in a much more gradual taper down to the edge, maybe even hollow grind it. It will cut like a -Beast-

I feel like a lot of Cheaper/less professional blades have this second bevel profile, just because it's easier to do grind that with a machine or jig. I'e bought a Sax blade once with pretty much the same grind, and that was definitely ground with a wheel. Saw that when grinding a proper bevel on a flat stone, it was definitely concave ground.

Question about those upturned quillions: why don’t swords with knuckle bows usually have another quillion on the knuckle side? I understand that it’s not necessary to protect the hand, but isn’t there a worry about the blade skating past the knuckle bow and hitting something important? Or at a minimum, wouldn’t it allow you to better bind up your opponent’s blade?
@raphlvlogs27112 сағат бұрын
modern people tend to overly associate choppy D guard swords with maritime conflicts despite that they were also used a lot outside of that historically especially in cavalry
