Simon, if you want to outline the regions (even if there is no "good reason" to do so other than that you want to do it), you go right ahead. I love seeing you have fun. It has been a while since a puzzle brought tears to your eyes on the channel, so that was fun to see, too. That long line with just 4s on it - so funny and amazing. Thanks so much for this very entertaining and interesting video!

Simon, you often say you don’t know how the checker knows… it’s really quite simple - the setter can embed the solution into the puzzle, thanks to Sven’s superb software. There is an option to “create link with solution” after the initial solve which the setter can then publish.

Far from being annoyed when Simon did the outlines, I was thrilled. It looks much more complete that way. It does annoy me that some regions on the very edge of the grid have the border drawn and some don't, though. I think it's nicer if it's consistent.

Technically if you go by the letter of the instruction borders along the edge are not a part of the solution, since it explicitly directs you do "divide the grid" which a border line does not do (it makes me nervous watching him fill those in at all since I'm used to solving puzzles in Penpa etc that are often set in such a way that stray marks on the grid border break the answer checker)

great puzzle. there's a really nice way to do progress at 30:30 that doesn't involve as much trial and error. the bottom left circle is surrounded by finished regions and it's line, so it has to be a 1. the other end has to be at least 3, but can't be 3 since it would put 2 2s on its line which is impossible make their regions not touch. so it has to be a 4+. 4 would bump into another region of size 4, and 5 is the max that can fit and in only 1 way to place it. this makes the lines 2s and 3s (they cant be greater than 5 since it doesn't fit, can't be 4 since they all touch finished 4 regions and can't be 1's since they're on lines). the last circle needs to be a 1 or 2 since its line has to be between itself (2,3) and the other end (5). it can't be 1 or it would isolate the cell next to it making it 2 1s touching. so the last circle is a 2. forcing everything on the lines to be 3s.

The app knows the solution is correct when the puzzle is provided with a solution; but, if it's not, then it will use sudoku rules to check for mistakes and assume it's correct if it's consistent. This means that you can check a non-Sudoku-rules puzzle, provided the puzzle's solution is known! Sven's software is quite excellent, isn't it?

Somehow there always seems to be a part where Simon overcomplicates things. The circle closest to the left lower corner already had a known value of 1 for ages because it is not part of any of the other surrounding regions and cannot extend onto its own line.
@Michael-kp4bd
@Michael-kp4bd Жыл бұрын
That’s true, and I see things like this often - BUT… i almost always notice that the “obvious fillable cell” adds very little information to the puzzle, all the while Simon is cracking away at large leaps forward that strongly progress the puzzle. I also have to remember that there are often multiple paths that get you to a solved cell, so I don’t mind at all seeing it uncovered a different way. Simon’s intuition is so strong an unique, that something “over complicated” is just as valid if it is true and his brain figured out the logic!

At 29:30, there's a much easier next step than Simon's fairly convoluted logic: we know from the black lines that r9c2 can only ever "grow" into r9c3, but that cell is on its own between-line, so it does not grow, and therefore becomes a 1.

That was completely bonkers. I thought, "the long line needs to be at least alternating 4s and 5s, so the top end must be 6", then snorted my tea when I saw what that would do, and realised what the solution was. This should have been released on 1st of April. I started off drawing borders between bulbs and their lines. This made some of the plotting a bit easier. For instance, it was obvious that R9C2 was a 1, and that the first cell on the line had to go up and across, leaving a 2 region for the other bulb. Even without drawing borders between bulbs and lines, how could you not see that R9C2 had to be 1? Instead, you forced it to be a 1 by the other regions, proclaiming "and that makes this a 1". How could it be anything else?

I managed it, I only needed one hint from Simon which was the pink penning in line at timestamp 9:20. The rest of the logic I got myself so I'm pleased. At that one key moment in the puzzle I was saying "that's crazy!" I got pretty far up to the point of needing the given 2 and then I missed one possible configuration without realising, which made me falsely conclude I'd broken the puzzle. So I went all the way back to find my mistake, worked all the way through the puzzle again back to the same point before realising I didn't break it and just missed something haha.

The checking works because it looks at the numbers, and the fact that no two adjacent regions with the same number may touch avoids any ambiguity. So you only need the numbers to define the regions, and the coloring isn't needed at all.

This is why I suck at puzzles: when the requirement was presented that the two ends of that long line had to be a 3 and a 5/6 on the other end, my brain resisted. And then when it was 3-to-5, my brain said "there is no way you can put just one number on a long line across a whole puzzle like that. You've obviously done something wrong, go back and start over if you need to." I do, however, enjoy watching them be solved, so there is that. And the worst part is that when Simon is solving things, there are times when I am quicker than he is to see things. And then I think, "well, if I am quick at this then maybe I should try to solve some puzzles." Sigh.

this was a fun solve. I do think simon did some unnecessary bifurcation around the 30 minute mark. If you mark border between circles and their lines, It's clear that the bottom left circle has to be a one, and that the members of the lines have to be two or three. and then the circle bottom of column four cannot be a one, because that would create a problem to it's neighbor on the right. that forces the three for the squares on the line.

@emilywilliams3237
@emilywilliams3237 Жыл бұрын
I am not a coder, either, but my impression from other puzzles that are not sudokus is that there is at least one extra step required to have the solution in the software - it is not automatic nor programmed in in any automatic way. Only some of the basic constraints are programmed into the software; otherwise the solution has to be specifically input by following some extra steps. You may notice that sometimes the message at the end of a solve says something like "Looks good to me!" and in that case the solution has not been included, but the programming of the software checks the grid for what it has been programmed to understand (starting with the basic rules of sudoku). Especially grids that don't follow "normal sudoku rules" have to have the solution directly included. Since Simon (nor Mark) does not see the puzzle before they start the video, they don't know in advance if the solution has been included, which is why they sometimes are surprised (especially with non-standard puzzles).
@RoderickEtheria
@RoderickEtheria Жыл бұрын
@Emily Williams This said, he should know from previous puzzles that the software is capable of recording solutions. The recording of a solution is easier for constraints a program isn't built for than adding additional constraints. This means that, whenever their software is used for differing constraints than sudoku, the expectation should almost always be on that the solution was included.

20:08 this looked deceptively tough at first glance, but wow that was easier than I thought (don't mean it in a negative way, I like my puzzles solvable). Fun puzzle!

27:35 on the second go round. It helped using the rules as written instead of the insane rules I decided upon myself. Though to be fair, it was still a pleasant solve until it wasn't with a circles greater than lines rule. 😅

30:21 with a couple of peaks when I got stuck pencil marking incorrectly. Like, I said r6c2 could only be 123 because I didn't see that it could move further than that past the circles. Neat logic, just wasn't really used to all of the possibilities.
