Cracking The Cryptic

Күн бұрын

** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
We don't want to say too much about this latest sudoku from Chameleon. We just encourage you to give it a go. It has 1 star for difficulty (suggesting it should be very easy) and a ludicrous 80% approval rating - we would give it 100%.
Play the puzzle at the link below:
link.sudokupad.app/chameleon-...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply ie place digits 1-6 into each row, column and box without repeats. Most of the grid is covered in fog; placing correct digits (without guessing!) will clear the fog from adjacent cells. Digits in a cage cannot repeat and sum to the small clue in the top left corner (if given). Digits do not repeat on a blue line.
** NEW SUDOKU HUNT JUST OUT **
A sudoku hunt, Let's Get Kraken (with a new movie theme!), will be released on 1 July at 4pm UK time on Patreon.
Join us on Patreon for as little as $2 a month to play.

I love the idea that Fog-of-War puzzles enable a kind of setter's commentary or a story-telling element to be revealed as you clear the fog. Probably better if that appeared next to the grid and not in it but that could be great fun.

On the other hand, if the funny commentary obscures some important elements of the grid (like here), that is slightly less funny.

at 16:20 you can eliminate r6c5 as 2 much easier. If it were 2, then r2c5 would be 4 and r2c4 would be 2, and that would leave no viable options for the 8 cage

I laughed out loud at this puzzle multiple times, and then had to explain to my fiance why a sudoku of all things was funny. Also, at 23:14 - you are correct that you missed something that is (IMO) easier to spot. If you consider the 8-cage and the 7-cage together, you should quickly realize that if the 7-cage has a 2 in column 4, it forces a 4 into column 5 in both the 7 and the 8 cage simultaneously, which obviously does not work. That also gives you enough info to get the 2 in the bottom right and the rest of the solve proceeds the same way.

It took me way longer than it should have to find what I thought was the big trick with the 8 cage: there’s a 2 in R4C4 or there’s a 4 in R5C5, so the 24 pair in box 2 could only be one way around. But Simon didn’t even need that!

i found another piece of logic that i found to be really beautiful. at 16:30, the 24 pair in box 2 cant be 2 4 because then it would make the 8 cage 135 which adds to 9 and not 8. i think we're missing something else though, since i can't see any easy way to get the rest of the grid filled in. nothing that would keep it as a 1 star difficulty anyways

22:45 for me. The easy path forward at 19:30 is to realize that the six cell cage has to contain all 6 digits, and the only place for green is R6C4. Then, by Sudoku, there is no green or purple in the 8 cell cage. That means the 8 cell cage can only contain one of the digits 356, which rules out 135 as a way to fill it. So R4C4 has to be a 2.

An easier way of finding 2 in the corner is just to extrapolate from the 8-cage. If it's 3-1-4 then the 4 looks up at a 2/4, which uses up the 2 in c5 ... and if it's 2-1-5 then the 2 looks up at a 2/4 pair, using up the 2 in c5 ... so either way the 2 in box 6 has to be in r6c6.

I think that there is an easier way to get the 2 in the bottom corner, then the steps Simon took around 23:00 into the video. If you focus on the 8 cage, you can see that either possibility for that cage puts a 2 in row 2 column 5.

I loved it, but I can also see the reason it gets disapproved. You have to trust the markings extend as they seem to for cages to progress early on, but you can't trust that they extend for the lines. Would be much better if there wasn't a need to assume the cages will extend as expected for the first couple of bits of logic.

At 23:32 I'm absolutely astonished how Simon has managed to prove there's a 2 in the corner without noticing that the 8-cage in either version resolves the 2/4 pair in row 2 in the same way, because either it's a 2/1/5 resolving a 4/2 up top, or it's a 3/1/4, also resolving a 4/2 up top. Simon finds a complicated way to solve the puzzle haha where does green go in the 6-cell cage?

I'd love to see a twist on these Fog of War with how the 'lights' work. Like if they revealed all the cells in a row and column. That would change the logic a bit.

I'm awful at Sudoku. I got to the coloring phase and could not proceed. I'm glad Simon had a pause at that point.

I was so stoked to finish in 10 mins because it was the first time I have ever beaten the Video time. But then when I watched Simon’s solve I realised I had made a logic leap which helped me finish quicker. Bummer. Oh well, easy come… easy go.

The laugh is priceless for puzzling that X was great discovery..toobad he couldnt get the arcs as close as possible as the sfwr would allow. This puzzle was solvable once the 8 block was revealed as it fixes the 7block...the crazy thing is if u assumed the RHS arc continuous , the puzzle broke. Fun puzzle

Where did you get 20% from? I loved the puzzle. It was challenging for me, so probably at least a 2 or 3 on the difficulty side, but as other posters pointed out, that's part of the joke. It's all just a fun puzzle, yall need to calm down. After solving it, I knew I had to get Simon's reactions to all the fun little inside jokes.

I honestly prefer having the conflict checker turned on. The conflicts are always obvious enough, you just have to land your eyeballs on them. I'd rather have the grid point them out to me than spend 15 minutes being lost because of one small thing I never see.

There are a few ways of finishing the puzzle and the last bit of fog. I noted that 4 couldn't go in r2c5, as it would force two 2s in c4. But I did initially make the assumption about the line going into r6c6. It's the only thing I wasn't too happy with, but otherwise was fun. I also think you could have done more with the 356 colours if you looked at green and the 6cell cage.

You could get the 2 in the corner much earlier at 16:16. If you tried placing 2 in r6c5 then r2c5 would be a 4, putting 2 in r2c4, which puts 3 in r4c4, and a 4 in r5c5 to complete the cage total. But then we have two 4s in c5. So the 2 must go r6c6.

This puzzle took me a surprisingly long time. I suspect that I took the longest ever. I used letters for 356, substituting them only in the last few plays. The setter took a pot-shot at Simon, resolving the final 356 ambiguity by specifying no 3 in the corner. 6:40 I snickered when Simon said, "We mustn't repeat on that diagonal." (This is after I finished the puzzle.) 8:40 My version said, "You guessed it. It's 7!" 9:40 I snickered every time Simon referred to the diagonals or the X. Then I utterly lost it at the reveal. 13:50 More snickering when Simon said there's another (shape). 16:30 2 in the 23 cell forces 2 into the corner. What happens with 4 in the 45 cell instead? 21:20 If 45 is 4, then 24 must be 2, forcing 2 into the corner as well. Heads I win, tails you lose: in the 8-cage, if R4C4 is 2, then R2C4 is 4. If R5C5 is 4 then R2C5 is 2.
