** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
It's been a long time since Simon's attempted a "plain" thermo sudoku on the channel but Blashyrkh has come up with one of the all-time great puzzles. It's called Club 27 - we think on account of the fact that there are only 27 cells on thermometers in the grid (surely some sort of record?). The way this solves verges on the unbelievable.
Play the puzzle at the link below:
sudokupad.app/dowo5gsiqj
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Along a thermometer, digits increase from the bulb end.
** PATREON BONUSES **
Simon's latest foray into the world of Islands Of Insight is available now TODAY!
They'll also be a bonus crossword video from Simon and his solve of Region Geometry by Emre Kolotoğlu (3hr 36min long...!) released over the weekend. And Simon's discussion video about Dean Mayer's Sunday Times crossword from last weekend will appear at 1minute past midnight on Sunday morning (which is the moment that competition has ended.)

Blashyrkh here, thanks everyone for their kind comments! And congrats to Simon for a very strong solve, seeing things really quickly. The video is only so long due to your generous explanations. The puzzle of course references the number of thermo cells, but it also alludes to the actual "Club 27", the group of famous musicians all dying at the young age of 27 (Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, many others, more recently Amy Winehouse). This has nothing to do with the puzzle, but it's the one thing that come to my mind when I thought about connotations of the number 27 :D The record for lowest number of thermo cells is something ridiculous like 19, but that's with full-length thermos. This might be a record when the length is limited to four cells, no idea.

This is the kind of video that, when I was first watching a couple of years ago, I would have had to pause and rewind and watch again and think about it and then watch again several times - most of the time - throughout the video. Today I just accepted it and understood it. And this is totally thanks to you and Mark and the great instruction and demonstration that you do every single day. What a world of pleasure in variant sudoku CtC has opened to me - thank you so much, Simon.

Likewise. After pausing a moment, I spotted R1C1 as the most restricted, and the cell the setter wanted you to be thinking about. I wasn't able to deduce it was a 5, and probably wouldn't have without a LONG think, but simply recognizing it as the point of interest is a sign I've learned a lot.
@brianj959
@brianj959 3 ай бұрын
I agree! And to take an example, I figured out that it would be a 5 in R1C1 about 30 seconds before Simon said it: two years ago I would have had to rewind and retrospectively study Simon’s conclusions to understand. I’ve very much loved watching CTC over past few years; I even get a certainly pleasure yelling at Simon’s scanning shortcomings! ;)

"I think that's a 5" at 17:35 is just so insane to someone who has just started randomly watching these because it's interesting and haven't done much with abnormal Sudoku. 'oh so we're just randomly saying digits now, I can do that too'
@bobblebardsley
@bobblebardsley 3 ай бұрын
It's even more insane when you've been watching these for a while and you start to sometimes know WHY it's going to be a 5 even before Simon explains it. I still can't even begin most of the puzzles featured but I sometimes see where a logical deduction is going and pre-2020 I had never even heard of abnormal Sudoku, much less attempted to solve one. Enjoy the ride, it's a fun one!

I've been watching for years, and, at least trying to, solve that whole time. I've gotten to the point where I can solve almost all the puzzles on here, some "faster" than Simon or Mark. (I put it in quotes because I'm not trying to explain everything as I do it.) I was able to break into this puzzle and get that 5, but even when I saw the pattern starting to develop, it took me a while to really convince myself (I was able to first eliminate either 12 or 89 from the row or column logic [I don't remember which] and then the other pair. So I marked that cell 34567. A that point I assumed it would be a 5, but still had to think about it a bit. Then I watched Simon's solve. And it even amazed me that he just came out with the "I think that's a 5" as quick as he did.

While trying to solve this, I also came to the prediction that r1c1 had to be a 5. It's funny how I'd never have been able to do that without watching CtC videos for years. Alas, I tried so hard to prove it was a 5 but couldn't reduce it further from 456. Maybe a few more years of watching will bring me to that point!
@bobblebardsley
@bobblebardsley 3 ай бұрын
@@wenen4510 I'm probably at a similar level. I could see that the thermos had to contain most of the extreme digits between them and then it's a case of looking for cells that see them all, but I couldn't quite nail down the restriction enough. You definitely get suspicious of 1, 5 and 9, and anything adding up to 6, 10, 15 etc (or 24, 30, 35) after you've watched enough CTC vids.

The Sudoku Theory wiki (which I think Philip runs, with other contributors) says the minimum number of thermos is 3, and it's conjectured that the minimum number of cells in thermos is 20 but that's not proven yet. Discussion happens in the theory channel on the CTC discord and I would not be surprised if the thermo question comes up again there.

I usually get a little bit more bifurcatey than Simon, but in general, I don't count anything that can be done in my head as bifurcation. It's not bifurcation unless I put a pencil mark down to track what would happen. Simon doesn't do that except as a demonstration once he's figured the logic out, so it seems fine to me. What a brilliant and innovative construction. This is exactly the type of puzzle I love, a single variant rule, and elegant setting making excellent use of the variant's properties. More like this please, and fewer of the many-variant puzzles. No 3 in the corner was a bonus for me, because it's a joke who's use by date has long since expired and it's starting to reek. Poor Mark who is clearly embarrassed by it all has been coerced into going along with it too. Please turn off the celebration in the settings and move on from 2020. @ 35:42 - "there's a 5 definitely in this domino" - and if you had only checked, you'd have seen which of the cells it was. Even better would have been if you'd checked at the time you placed the 5. That rules 5 off the thermo in boxes 7&8, which puts 89 on the tip, disambiguating the lines in C1-3. All those easy wins missed for the lack of a moment's glance. @ 44:44 - "there's an 89 pair in this column" - which just like with the 5, you could have resolved. The 7 in C1 is looking at a 78, which makes the tip 9, resolving the pair. @ 46:16 - "this digit is under quite a lot of pressure" - if you used your pencil-marks, you could put 5 in there. You've got a 24 pair in box 8, and 4s pencil-marked in box 9, both in R8/9, so 4 can be placed in box 7, leaving R8C3=3, which resolves the whole of boxes 1 & 7.

"Secretary" pronounced as "secretree." This is no big deal (you know what they're saying), but this kind of thing is hugely important in saying "Topiary" (that's a 4 syllable word) and if said as "tope ya ree," how is anyone you're speaking to going to glean "Topiary" from "tope ya ree?" 30:44 for me. had to guess once and the next move was crazy.

Solved it by Intuition in 22 minutes. Figured out there was pressure from bith sides on r1c1, so I put a five there. Assumed it must be on the opposite thermo. Both guesses were right. It worked without having proven anything.

You found a solution. Whether you solved it is, I would say, debatable.

I'm a bit surprised by the snobbery in these comments. I could easily see a speed solver go, "This cell is clearly under a lot of upward pressure and a lot of downward pressure. I'm pretty sure it's got to be 5 - I'm gonna go with it, and not take the time to prove it." Are speed solvers not actually solving? More importantly, there are no sudoku police - do whatever you find most enjoyable. And I would encourage others not to dump on people for enjoying a puzzle as they see fit.

@@steve470 "Are speed solvers not actually solving?" As I said, I consider it debatable. In my view, I would say no, they're not "solving" if they're making educated guesses along the way. I don't have an issue with anyone tackling these puzzles anyway they see fit. If they get enjoyment from it, that's great. I just dispute the claim that they "solved" the puzzle. That's all.

@@RichSmith77Per Merriam-Webster, the first definition of "solve" is "to find a solution, explanation, or answer for". Per Chambers, "to discover the answer to (a puzzle) or a way out of (a problem)". As I said, I consider it snobbish - that someone would not only differentiate the two, but post an unsolicited negative reply to someone else's comment to point it out. That's all.

I agree - but I think that Simon often does not include his face, and Mark almost always does these days. (And the time of the video suggests Simon rather than Mark.) I look forward to both of them!

I have no idea why Simon continues to always go for dark colors (obvuscating and making it hard to see his own pencil-marks). No idea Why is that? Okay, I see for colorblind reasons, but aren't there any two lighter colors that are colorblind-friendly?) Simon often uses (or even runs out) two or more. I lightened mine up. Why not lighten them up? (That's consternating) You go,though, Simon..

I am late to the party sorry, but I don't understand the logic of this one. With the colour domino, Simon assume that two digits are higher that the two other, and place them together on the opposite thermo. And from that he has a 1-2 domino and a 3-4 domino. But why was it not 1-4 and 2-3 let's say, with one digit being smaller and the other bigger than the two others. I don't get how you successfully prove this point.
