Michael Keaton was older than that when he shot The Protege and did probably more action scenes than he did in Batman. Everyone in that film was over 50 except the lead actress Maggie Q. When's Tom Cruise going to get old already?

I thought it would be fun to recount a little story I was told relating to Walt Disney while working with legendary actor Mickey Rooney years ago. I was working on a small, low budget, independent film with the shooting name, “Strike The Tent.” This film was later renamed, “The Last Confederate.” I served mainly as a production office coordinator during the production. I say “mainly” as I had to wear MANY hats on that show, figuratively speaking. Due to various unforeseen circumstances, I was asked to serve as Mickey Rooney’s personal assistant for the day while we were shooting scenes with Mickey in Lenoir, NC. I have never been the type of person to be star-struck with anyone. However, Mickey Rooney was such a living legend! Being a Disney fan, I asked if he had many encounters with Walt. He said he had quite a few. Of course, we all know now that Mickey Rooney would later be involved with several Disney Studios projects like Flubber, The Fox and the Hound, Pete’s Dragon, etc. After I questioned him about Walt Disney he said, “Well, there was the time he tried to cheat me out of some money!” I guess I looked pretty shocked and curious. I could tell Mickey was just dying to elaborate. Mickey said, “Yes. He almost swindled me! We were at a party and a few of us went into a quiet side room to play some poker. Walt was an incredible card player. Well, it got down to the two of us in the room and Walt pulled out a deck from inside his coat pocket, shuffled, and dealt. The SOB (he didn’t use the acronym) won hand after hand after hand. I thought he was psychic or something. Then, I noticed how he kept glancing at the back of my cards as I held my hand. He even sorta squinted a bit. I started covering the back of my cards with my hand and, guess what! He lost hand after hand! Finally I said, ‘Walt, I never figured you for a cheater!’ and he looked shocked for a moment and then said, ‘Awww heck! I was going to eventually tell you anyway. Just having some fun. I was just trying out something I’ve been practicing.’” He said Walt then pushed his money back toward him and revealed that he HAD been reading his cards. Mickey said Walt then explained that a magician from the park (the store I think) introduced him to cards that had slight variations in the back design that, when memorized, would indicate the other person’s hand. He then showed Mickey how it worked. Mickey then said to me, “I’ve always wondered if I hadn’t covered my cards better and then called him on it…if Walt would have told me?! Perhaps he would have just cleaned me out!” I thought that was a wonderful memory of a conversation with a living legend about another legend. Not long ago, I paid my respects to Mickey in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. I left a playing card, an ace, on the little ledge below his final resting place. He was a fascinating man.

In retrospect this show isn't half bad. This was probably one of the few shows Brandon Tartikoff was given to deal with when he took over NBC in 1981 so it's easy to see why this wasn't renewed as Tartikoff was trying to rebuild a sinking NBC ship and only invested himself in promising shows (Hill Street Blues, Late Night With David Letterman) and probably figured that this show wasn't worth the investment (given the ratings etc.). You can see the change in sitcoms between April of 1982 when this show ended and six months later in September of '82 when Cheers began it's run.

He would have nailed the part. He was an astounding actor...he adapted to every role he played and gave it 100%!!! Love the way "All in the family" turned out but Rooney would have done just as well!! There are many roles he has played that where he reminded me of the Archie character even before "All in the family" was created. RIP to an ICONIC actor!

I heard a couple of things behind the scenes about Mickey Rooney being absolutely livid with producers after the show was canceled. I also heard about some of the bullying Dana Carvey did on Nathan Lane. (who ever thought, Dana Carvey could be a bully.) we may need Dave Sundstrom to get on here to give us some more insight.

Great cast, cheesy 80s sitcom writing. I looked for this after hearing Dana Carvey talk about it on his podcast. Could have been better with the cast they had.

Nathan Lane had every acting chop he need already back then! Carvey was very flat-perhaps how he was directed. Honesty, the show wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting and even included a smattering of funny lines! But it does have "cheap" and "on-the-fly" written all over it.

Carvey didn't have any good lines. Rooney received a few choice lines and timed them perfectly, that got a few laughs from me.

@@RichV20 Wayne and Garth were written as Twentysomething loosers, still living in parents basements (When that was not common) not supposed to be teens. P.S. most college students are 18-24ish so being 27 wasn't a big stretch.
