I really like how the people in black had a lot more parts where only they were showing, like it wasn't About jazz, it was about them. But the 'good' group still got one section where jazz wasn't there, where they were still in your face, kind of showing how even their 'good' opinion is about them, and could turn to malice at the drop of a hat. And as well how Jazz always looked confused and concerned, and there was one point where he was directly in the center of an eye. Not the most subtle metaphor, but still poignant. There's also a part where they're tearing him apart where he tries to leave, and they yank him back, but most importantly they yank him back Onto The Throne, onto the pedestal, like he can't escape the Glorification and Demonization just by getting out of the spotlight, because they'll keep dragging him back just to tear him to bits.

I got a different meaning, specifically following the lyrics - basically got the sense that Jazz was calling out guys like the one he depicts here, essentially posers. Specifically here, its the sort of guy who, whether he’s genuine about his facade or not, does not genuinely fit with the model of masculinity that is idealized in the group he wants to fit in with. Faux allyship when he’s still ignoring women or aggressively insecure about his own sexuality, etc - and come the throne scene, we see the faceless masses, whether they’re his impressions of others, or more of a representation of online spaces and the like, we get to see the people who’ve bought into the charade and obsess over having found “one of the good ones”, and we see the others in black, whether cynics online or a representation of Jazz’ character’s insecurity, tearing him apart, calling him out. “Fuck your little show, we know that you’re faking it; yes, we’re all impressed, now fit to the labelling.” I tend to think the latter scene is more internal, calling for introspection that people either need to be honest with themselves, or model their ACTUAL behavior with whatever they’re trying to emulate, not just make half measures to try to score with a crowd by lying.
@valiantknight63642 жыл бұрын
I love that he doesn't look any less uncomfortable and confused with the praise than with the scorn. It's all objectifying, even if one is more painful they're both unpleasant. And then the end while the credits roll, with the clapping at the audience like he's giving us a taste of our own medicine while also presumably genuinely using it to thank his patreons. Good stuff.
@mosesbejon6660 Жыл бұрын
Also, the person who claps is one of the person who tore "Harry Styles" - or whoever he's making fun of in the initial part of the song - apart. Of course they would praise the creation of a piece of content that makes fun of him, like this video would've been if Jazz emu hadn't changed his mind about what he was creating. So him clapping at the end is deeply meaningful. A dystopian internet where the worshipers and the haters switch almost robotically, one who was previously tearing "Harry Styles" limb from limb is now the worshipper of the piece that humiliates him and is just as pleasant as those who worshipped "Harry Styles".

Playing into liberal tropes without caring or believing purely as a means to attract dates and popularity is shitty. Hence the bitingly sarcastic worship "You are the saviour, you are the saviour". Simultaneously, it's very easy for us to sit here and dunk on a caricature we've created for the purpose, and the way we sit down and say "this guy sucks, I know how people should really act", even "this guy isn't one of the good ones, unlike me" is a moment of profound ego. I love the lines “allyship is all / about listening to women’s thoughts / and I can tell you all / about that over a drink at yours.” Because it’s such a real depiction of how the ‘good ones’ will act when it comes to feminism. Using it as a method to try and seduce women, explaining to women how to be an ally, the way they will talk over women. There’s just so many layers there. The whole song slaps, but I think that verse is just superb and really mirrors real life experiences I’ve had with men like that. Fantastic work Mr. Emu 🎉
@Kortemaki2 жыл бұрын
Here's my analysis, which may be incomplete but is what I took away from the piece. I definitely didn't intend to write an essay here but I was motivated to dig into this so let's gooo: First, the tone during the verses provides the most direct message, in that the main character is written as an antihero who performs gender nonconformity as a way to dismantle toxic masculinity. His behavior is appropriative and hypocritical and the lyrics are very sarcastic in his self-descriptions as "a walking red flag" or someone who will "tell you all about" how to listen. We are not meant to love this character, but we are meant to understand him as someone who "we all know" or perhaps see aspects of within ourselves. The masked figures and their distorted chorus in contrast represent the mixed bag of social responses that one might encounter when being perceived as a cis ally engaging with gender nonconformity, from validation and worship to offense and gender policing. A cis man "putting on a dress" can lead to many different responses and this is reflected in the cacophony of the chorus. The protagonist's behavior is definitely misguided and can be analyzed as harmful even without seeing exactly how he uses or abuses his social capital. However, in his own interpretation, he *is* "one of the good ones." Specifically, he is doing his best to model progressive masculinity, and thus his problematic behavior is a result of a lack of self awareness or critical analysis, probably both. The masked figures overlook aspects of this identity in ways that make it impossible for the well-intentioned but misguided protagonist to grow; either by ignoring his questionable behaviors to idolize him as "the saviour"; or ignoring his good intentions and ostensible open-mindedness to tear him apart as someone who is "faking it" and should "stick to the labeling". The echos of "we must be some of the good ones" further tie these figures to the antihero as people who are sticking up for what they believe is right in the gender space, even if they too may display unexamined violent behaviors. The final motif of the decapitated protagonist evokes a sense that these paradoxical "good ones" don't last long once they find their way into the public eye. This could be because they learn to analyze their toxic behavior and stop causing harm, but this interpretation isn't fully supported by the metaphor. More likely it is intended to represent a social death: either cancellation from liberal circles in response to categorically toxic behaviors or the perceived threat thereof; or ostracism by conservative circles on the basis of gender nonconformity itself; and perhaps a combination of both. The confusion in the man's face as the masked figures run their fingers across his body is consistent with the interpretation that they are reading whatever they want into his gender performance, and in doing so killing any hope there is of these "good ones" establishing a defined model for positive masculinity. The "good one" Jazz portrays here is not a hero or someone to emulate, but is a nuanced personification of the complicated relationship many progressive cis men have with their gender identity in a world that is full of outdated and problematic models for masculinity that don't provide positive guidance for cis men. I haven't read it yet but I'm planning to read Richard Reeves "Of Boys and Men" which digs into how this is playing out societally in either America or the UK, I forget which. Anyway if you read through all of this I hope it helped you get more out of this rad music video!!!! Great thought provoking track and very evocative visuals and dance.

@Aeiouaaaaaaaaa2 жыл бұрын
@@hoonteri1760I think that’s partly what the song is about, esp in the first half. I think the second half is when the music then calls our behavior as viewers into question as well. Why are we so quick to worship or demonize this kind of guy, and why is that judgement based on whatever strawman of him we find convenient for us, rather than the person’s actions and intent on their own terms? OP’s comment explained it better than I could, but I think it challenges our supposed moral superiority when we tear down cis men who practice gender nonconformity as “toxic fakes”. Sure, sometimes that is all it is, but I think in plenty of cases there’s a lot more going on than we’re usually willing to understand.

Very late to the discussion, but I think there's a point to be made with the fact that often times the praise and the hate bleed into each other so thoroughly that all that's left is noise.

Really loving the calling out that, even if you fit the trends and claim to be an ally, if you act like a jerk on the inside and don't work on yourself, none of it actually means much. You'll be torn apart by the people who hate you for presenting in a way they think is terrible, left by those who trusted you to be better, and realize that there's nothing left but your insecurities when you haven't tried to invest in becoming a better person. The lyrics about the LGBTQ community hit pretty hard, ESPECIALLY the line of "Putting on a dress that's so freaking brave of ya OMG obsessed with that cute behaviour Never had to stress it might lead to danger yeah" I'm a queer person who wants to fall into an androgynous category but can't because it actually might cause me danger and death. But there are others who "fit the label" being not only allowed to be androgynous, but praised for it as they use it for the sole purpose to try to climb the social ladder, and it makes makes that line hit SUPER hard. Thank you for this incredible masterpiece of work. It's self aware, well choreographed, wonderfully done, and all around a fantastic piece of art.

I'm pretty sure that besides mocking the "so-called-allies", it also shows how those who criticize them are themselves thinking higher of themselves as if they were better and knew best bc of course there are men faking it to hook up with feminists, but not everyone that fits that label is faking it and some do it because it is in the grey area where you can still argue that you're masculine/a man and yet be a little bit more free to express your gender identity, which helps closeted enbys like me idk, I'd love to hear what you have to say about what I just said this song also gives me Verbatim-Mother Mother vibes as in the struggle between different gender expressions of cismen, from kinda-queer to a perfect fit to the label, idk

Lyrics: The modern masculine Repressed, aggressive, desensitized Me, I'm not like him Respectful, gentle, check my Styles Granny necklace upon my neck? Check One dangly earring from Tibet? Yes Fingernail paint, I guess There's no question I must be one of the good ones (Come and fix me girl, I'm so broken) I must be one of the good ones (Stay away from me girl, I'm unfixable) Allyship is all About listening to women's thoughts And I can tell you all About that over a drink at yours How could I be The Bad Guy? My trousers are tight Yes I'm a walking red flag, but I'm wearing a Pride one But if someone implies that I'm gay I will fight them, right now I must be one of the good ones (Yes I'm sensitive, but in a way that Makes me extremely physically strong) I must be one of the good ones (My t-shirt? Oh it says "This is what a Feminist looks like". Yes it's pointing at me) Putting on a dress that's so freaking brave of ya OMG obsessed with that cute behaviour Never had to stress it might lead to danger yeah You are the saviour, you are the saviour (He must be one of good ones) Do the right thing, admit that you're faking it Fucking little shit go fix your behaviour Yes we know best so fit to the labelling Fit to the labelling Fit to the labelling (We must be some of the good ones) Putting on a dress that's so freaking brave of ya OMG obsessed with that cute behaviour Never had to stress it might lead to danger yeah You are the saviour, you are the saviour (He must be one of good ones) Do the right thing, admit that you're faking it Fucking little shit go fix your behaviour Yes we know best so fit to the labelling Fit to the labelling Fit to the labelling (We must be some of the good ones)

For me, it ended up being a very deep song that took me multiple days to digest, and I am grateful for that. It's because every time you look at the personas depicted and mentally judge them, you 'must be one of the good ones'. And if you then judge yourself... you 'must be one of the good ones'... you're just in a spiral. To me the answer is to accept yourself and others for the idiot imperfect negative gremlins we are and figure things from there, in full acknowledgement. You don't need to only love the good ones. I need to upgrade my wardrobe tho
