Hi Angel. It really saddens me to hear that. For a High School runner, still developing physically, to be "asked" (or told!) to run another race the next day, will simply destroy him within a few years. Sadly, this is what happens to most College Middle/long distance runners. After having race meeting where they are required to race sometime 3 or 4 times in a weekend, plus "peaking" multiple times a year, for Cross country, Road (sometimes), Indoor Track and then Outdoor track... it just destroys them. Burnt out by age 23/24. That's why 98% of College middle distance track runners retire at end of college. It's sad. The top USA middle distance runners hit their career peaks in late 20's early 30's.

Based on the structure of their splits, what do you think about those "suicidal" first 400s?
@mr.mastermine70832 жыл бұрын
It looked to me as if they were trying to hit 60, 63/64, 63/64, 60. The first splits were indeed very fast. Not quite sure what the strategy there was, It could very well just be accidental. After I watched one of the post-race interviews this seemed to be the most likely answer. Very impressive race in my eyes, hope to get a mile as fast as those splits someday.
@lesmoore36382 жыл бұрын
@@mr.mastermine7083 i like your concept BUT why do folks run the first split so fast? I'd say for obtaining a good position in a competitive race, which this was not. Physiologically, a more even pace with slightly depending splits would be optimal.
@mr.mastermine70832 жыл бұрын
@@lesmoore3638 While I do agree that physiologically more even splits are often a better way to run solo. I think that remembering that the runners are still in high school is important. just because they run fast times doesn't mean that they have the same pacing and Adrenaline control as professionals. When I race, while nowhere near as fast, my splits often are similar to these being fastest at the start with slightly slower splits in the middle and then again a fast-finishing split. I also don't put it past them to be training through this race and using it for an opportunity to test their ability to cycle out lactic acid.
@lesmoore36382 жыл бұрын
@@mr.mastermine7083 "Training through" is a possibility. It wouldn't explain, to me, why you'd go out like a rocket? I suggest that testing ones ability to deal with lactic acid is best done in training and not at the Armory when trying to set a national record, but that's me. They are not freshman, this was not their first big race and I have no doubt they know about splits and that going out at a 3:50 pace is a bad idea for a 4:05/4:10 miler. Any runner of mine knew damn well that they were to fast well before the 400 meter split. Maybe this is impossible at the Armory but, in big races, my runners knew the pace plan and they were informed where they stood at 100 or 200 meters. Maybe big races were more important to me because I was involved in far fewer then this amazing, almost mythical, team. Why are your splits like they are. Something like 105, 95, 95, 105% is typical but why? I'd say the only reason for going fast in the first split is for positioning purposes and this was of no consequence in this race where they were head and shoulders above the competition. The consequences of being 2 seconds two slow are a lot easier to correct than those of being 2 seconds two fast. If there goal was to run 16:20, they failed and the reason was visibly demonstrated in those first laps. I have none of the information they have and I am not attacking these boys or the coach but I seriously doubt they would think I'm far from the mark. They're to good to not know better.

It may seem like a bold prediction but if these kids are entered in a collegiate 4xmile outdoors I think they can seriously threaten 16:00. Their pacing wasn’t great considering they had no one to run with and constantly were lapping kids. Aaron Sahlman has already run a 4:05 and Colin has dipped under 4. Lex’s opening 400 was 57, way too fast. The adrenaline of the Armory crowd clearly kicked in. They have a shot at 16 outdoors just need to be in a race with like competitors, which would be collegiate athletes.

bro he said it in the video only two teams have ever broken 16 and they were two pro teams. the 4xmile is such a shit event because if you're trying to actually run a fast time all the legs except for the lead off is basically a time trial. plus, literally every 4xmile in the history of college just comes down to the anchor leg nobody shoots for a fast time in that event so if they would have to lead the entire race wire to wire
