This watch has been in my mind for over 40 years, I’ve owned several looky likeys, but nothing of any real quality or accurate resemblance. Finally, I bought one from Hamilton, it arrived yesterday, and yes, it’s fantastic. I can’t stop looking at it..

I love this watch so much, it has this almost creepy alienating vibe to it. So unique. Some say it's "oldschool sci-fi", maybe. About the price: I wouldn't be surprised if it was like 3x what it actually is just looking at this watch and its history.

Some of us who are old enough to remember when these first came out in the early to mid 1970's. I lusted after one but as a kid, my parents would not even consider such a watch. I did eventually get a mechanical digital watch, later a Timex SSQ and many years later upon graduation from college a Rolex GMT Master. Back to this Hamilton, it could be tempting to buy one of these reissues.

I bought this in August brand new for £540, from Francis and Gaye in Coventry so a saving of £135 on the RRP. (Incidentally, it was still available at that discounted price a few days ago when I looked). I can confirm what's said in the video about the quality of finish. My only slight gripe is that the clasp has been milled to a quite sharp-edged finish, which can irritate the wrist after a while. However, that's not enough to put me off the watch, which I think is a brilliantly executed nostalgic piece.

Hi. My father owned an original Pulsar around 1975 or 1976. He was very happy with it, and I remember that his friends were impressed by this watch. He actually got a second one -similar, with date "complication"- shortly afterwards. How accurate is it? The most accurate quarz watch I have (no radio, no web or otherwise synced) is a Bulova Accutron II, which deviates some twelve seconds a year. By comparison, a regular Casio may vary up to thirty seconds a month. What about this Hamilton? ¡Gracias anticipadas!

Terrific macro shots show very well the great finish of the watch and bracelet. I have this watch that I purchased during lockdown as there was a decent discount at the time. Brilliant finish that even looks a little better than others from the brand even at the price. I'm old enough to remember this in Live and Let Die as a kid. The original required a button press every time you wanted to read the time and as you say this killed the battery quite quickly. The new Hamilton PSR uses a hybrid LCD-OLED display that allows the time to be read in half decent light to sunlight (LCD) and in the dark with the button push (OLED). Why is the LCD a tad dim? That would be down to the red filter over the negative LCD. It just would not look right with a clear filter. Back in the 70's there were many cheaper clones of the LED versions often displaying the date on a 3rd press of the button but is was only a few short years before these were killed of by positive LCD watches. Why the high price? Well only Hamilton can really answer that but I would assume that these are not made in large volumes as the target market is a niche one. Possibly down to the economy of scale. Anyway I'm very happy with mine and it certainly is a conversation piece. Great to see a review of a retro digital piece Teddy with the history of this watch, I didn't realise the original was made in Lancaster.

Im looking to buy this watch and I was wondering how did it hold up in time?î
@anthonystevens8683
@anthonystevens8683 Жыл бұрын
@@BogdanGunaa Mine is holding its finish pretty well, I don't use it as a daily driver (I have other less expensive watches that fit that use) but do wear it out and about. There are a few fine scratches but it still looks very good. I guess it'll mark like any other stainless steel case but the brushed finish is better at hiding wear than high polish. The battery is still good and is pretty accurate, maybe loosing a second maybe two over a few days. If you can I would suggest trying it on the wrist and seeing how you get on. I'm still very happy with my example and it gets plenty of attention for those not familiar with the old LED display.

This is pretty cool, and I think offering some perspective on the often sneered-upon digital watches and quartz watches. In 30 years, enthusiasts of vintage products will be clamoring for a nostalgic recreation of the Apple Watch. “Things were so much more beautiful back in 2021” they would say.
@iamthelaw69
@iamthelaw69 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry but that's not gonna happen. Technology-first products never, ever have any redeeming "vintage" value, with the notable exception of "first" products, like the first Apple computer, the first IBM PC, etc. Everything else in between has been relegated to junkyards and worthless garbage. The nature of adopting technology-first is to constantly stay first, not getting left behind. The PSR has vintage and artistic value, the Apple Watch only has hipster snobbery.

Back in the 70s my father had a watch like this. It came in a yellow gold case and bracelet and was very pricey. The LCD display had to be pressed to view. It was a status symbol, like the first pocket calculators that came out at that time. The $795 USD price tag is high for a quartz watch in stainless steel, but then again it is a vintage style. Bulova makes two versions of this watch, one in black and one in gold color. The LCD display is angled to view the time easier than the Hamilton model. The Bulovas are also cheaper.

I appreciate art and this and def American History -- Undistorted American History. But for it to be worn, I would like it to have a few functions. I think Hamilton could have been true to its design by resting with just the time -- however by pressing the button 3x it could bring up date at least. Its so hard to chose a watch to wear without feeling watch anxiety... Apple Watch has everything I want. AP watches are just incredible workmanship and feel great. The big problem with LED watches back in the day was, you had to push a button to tell the time and even then, in bright sunlight, it was still hard to read. Still, I remember as a kid getting a plastic Texas Instruments knockoff of this watch and it was pretty cool. Didn't last, but it was cool.

Very thick for a digital watch, maybe a slimmer version at less than 10mm would be more versatile as a dress and everyday...sorry to say, but for the price and dimensions, i prefer ( dare i say) a smart watch 😪

Ridiculous price. The most I would pay is $150 for that.

I realize there is a nostalgia element to this but I personally fail to see the value in a $700 digital watch that only shows the time in red digital numbers. If you don't want to pay the price of the Hamilton, I believe Bulova makes a similar watch in its Computron line that is much less and Casio's Mission Impossible digital watch (DW290-1V) comes with more features than Hamilton's and will run you about $35.

That's like saying I don't see the point in buying a Rolex when a Timex also tells the time.

With Hamilton you're paying for the brand name and quality. Bulova no one cares about and the quality of their watches is terrible.

@@Nico-zw9ud No, but Yema is out there and they're a notable brand who have made an LED reissue not dissimilar to this.
