Not exactly? If this was how it worked then you’d always go for the burst bait. It’s more so about understanding that taking a small amount of damage doesn’t necessarily mean you’re in a good situation, and taking a lot of damage doesn’t necessarily mean you’re in a bad situation. Potemkin might win off his mediocre damage 2D, but conversely, he could lose after doing a 200+ damage combo on Axl where he had to reset to neutral after wall break. It’s about understanding what your opponent wants to do and what their optimal situations look like beyond “hitting you”, basically.

Excellent video. Another thing I think a lot of newer players don't realise, especially those who come from other non-anime fighting games, is that having good blocking is almost as important, if not more important than having good pressure on a LOT of characters. Yes, pressure is designed to... pressure you. Obviously you want to be applying it and you don't want to be under it, but people treat it like it's game over. Sol got on top of me as Axl, or Ram got me in the corner... GG, right? Only if you're bad at blocking. Every mixup and pressure extender Ram and Sol as an example has come with counters and are reactable and characters with genuinely 'unfair' (as in, it isn't reactable and has many MANY variations like Chipp and Millia) have other disadvantages you can use. Wall break ensures you almost always get a second shot at neutral as well. Honestly, take the time to play a character with relatively bad Abare options like Axl and you'll level up your play with most other characters instantly because of the focus you have to have on good blocking and picking your moments to escape/interrupt pressure. The game isn't over, its just entered another phase; if you're not adjusting to that, yeah you're going to lose. If you're not consciously deciding when to use FD, try for instant block and picking when you poke out of pressure, you don't deserve to complain about it.

If they pressed something at the right spot and are about to do a small combo that will end midscreen, I burst alot of times just to push them back into the corner and retry my pressure. Burst is really helpful in alot of ways.

This is really important for Ramlethal. The difference between her being in the corner vs having her opponent in the corner is massive. @sola70993 жыл бұрын
Yea - i was getting annoyed at how early some people were bursting me, thinking it was a crazy choice to burn it early, (as a Ram player), but on retrospective it's actually the best. At the corner its difficult to burst ram sword explosion crap, so you might as well burst early to prevent that situation, and even get her at her worst, aka back to wall.

Bursting offensively to keep the corner when you get hit by abare is another cool example, even if when the actual damage you take is very low. Everything gets much clearer when you thinking in terms of win-conditions, specially in a "setup-heavy" series like Guilty Gear. Most of the really strong stuff is gated behind a specific situation and/or meter.

It's weird to say such and such needs to be perfect and then omit that the character has an excellent ability to create openings. the complaint is disingenuous or uninformed. that's just how things work; you either convert an opening into high damage OR you are able to create many openings. if a character can do both very well they're probably quite strong and maybe S tier (ie they are beyond the power of the majority of the cast). great example and a good topic.

Strive is a game about fighting the opponent more than fighting the character they're playing. Every character has tools to deal with just about any situation. If you're in a spot where your character doesn't have an answer, you need to prevent your opponent from getting you into that spot. That means predicting, learning, and being a little bit risky sometimes. Hell, hardly any moves any character has in this game can be called risky. If you make a mistake in strive, the game wants you to know it. Being blocked isn't a mistake in strive. If you're being blocked, often you still retain the advantage. It's when the opponent outsmarts you. That's when you lose. And yes, sol is nuts, but he's not Vanilla Sagat.

i thought you were going to mention how using burst can sometimes give a character their win condition. for example, my friend who plays potemkin is cornered by my chipp knows there is a point during chipps diagonal alpha blade that puts him in the corner. so he can gain corner control and get a free meaty Garuda impact if he holds it. While using it to send me full screen, doesn't actually let him escape the corner due to the difference in our character speed.

man, the other night I was playing a friend who mains i-no and I was getting frustrated trying to block his pressure, so I started just bursting whenever he got me backed into a corner. at the time I was thinking to myself like, this is giving up, just keep blocking, you're supposed to save that for when you're taking damage, etc, but I guess from this perspective that was probably not the worst adaptation to make

So basically IT IS a combo breaker but we're supposed to identify the combo as it starts and use it then instead of while getting bodied by it. Makes sense, in tourneys I always see people use it super early into the round, often at the very first hit, especially if it's a bad one.
@Chooseacoolname3 жыл бұрын
It is more than a combo breaker. Sure, you should burst combos that delete half you health bar. But hits that ARE NOT combos but lead to a losing situation should also be burst.

Think about it less as a combo breaker and more as a way to regain match momentum and this video will start to make sense. People burst early not only because that means they’ll have access to more burst (since burst fills over time and through getting hit), but also because it lets them choose to reset back to neutral instead of being in offense. It’s why people burst low damage hits when their opponent is in the corner, too. It’s not that the combo was going to do a lot of damage, it’s that they had their opponent in the perfect place, and decided that saving the burst to avoid damage is less valuable than going all in on this extremely advantageous position

Wouldn't it be more valuable to take a guess at least once before you burst? Say I'm playing the Millia mirror and I'm confident I can block my opponent's mix. If I block it correctly then I get to hold burst for another situation, but if it hits then I burst? Or is it a matter of "Millia's mix is so strong I shouldn't be gambling on it at all" so that's why I should burst as soon as she sweeps me? Your Potemkin example makes a lot of sense since you cannot burst Pot Buster, therefore guessing will get you killed, but I don't know if that's true for characters without command grabs.

You mentioned that when you played flux, he'd burst when he got hit by 2D in order to deny you your mixup. This makes a lot of sense, but would it instead be better to try and block the mixup and then burst if you fail? Even if it's a straight guess (which is not necessary true in every situation), you have some chance to guess right. This is generally how I approach defending against millia with regards to decisions to burst. If I guess right on defense, then not only do I avoid damage and get an opportunity to escape and reset neutral, I also get to save burst for if I make another mistake. If I guess wrong though, I understand that it's easier to bait the burst if after the mixup than before it, but I think as long as I cycle my options of where in millias cS disk mix combo to burst, that I'll be okay.
@Sestze3 жыл бұрын
you can see in the video when the potemkin bot blocks the disc correctly, he is still in a mixup afterwards that can lead to the same knockdown. You're also risking additional attempts for her to cheat her way back into point blank range with mirazh or jc iad j.h you. If you burst the initial sweep the burst is guaranteed, and she has to earn her "in" again.

Burst can be reacted to in tag with assist call virtually every time. I wouldn't recommend using it so much vs good players at all compared to like regular blazblue or guilty gear where its ok to use it more often. Too many burst safe combos, active switch making it whiff, and just straight up reacting to it with super/dp/or assist call

I'm a relatively experienced FG player, new to GG, this could just be a newbie feeling so if someone can elucidate something wrong in my comment it'll be appreciated: I love the burst mechanic, but i can't see it as an incredible comeback or out-of-pressure mechanic, even more in a Millia vs Potemkin situation. Millia will be allowed to use Burst one time to correct a mistake, but since her life is so low she will only be able to make a mistake 2 or 3 times in total (counting burst), while Potemkin will be able to make 5, 6, 7 mistakes in comparison, since his life is gigantic and will allow not only more chances but more burst uses. Since the characters with most health do equal or more damage than the squishy characters in this game for some reason, It ends up feeling like a "win more" mechanic for the character allowed to make more mistakes than as a good mechanic for Millia, Chipp or Zato. I agree that the saying "you can't make mistakes in this game" is wrong, but i think i'm at the opposite end since i feel like some characters are allowed to make TONS of mistakes when they shouldn't.
@drkryan213 жыл бұрын
I don’t think characters like Millia can make only 1 mistake. They are allowed to make more depending on the situation. Burst is a tactical tool, you see a lot of skill players bursting in the beginning of the game because they lost neutral and they want to reset. It is true that characters like Millia and Chipp take more damage because of their high mobility. But I feel the game would be unbalanced if they didn’t. But I also understand your point that other characters can make more mistakes. A good example is Sol.
@argo60433 жыл бұрын
GGST is my first fighting game, so take this with a grain of salt, but in my eyes in the Millia Potemkin matchup, the Millia should be the one deciding the pacing of the fight. While shes only able to make two or three mistakes if the Potemkin is hitting optimal damage each mistake, the Potemkin is going to be making way more mistakes overall. Pot is going to have way more limited movement, and if Millia is getting openings with her good combo damage moves, yeah she has to work harder to hit the combos but its much harder to cover all her mixups then most characters high/low or crossup. From my experience Millia should generally be putting on pressure and forcing the opponent into much more situations that are favorable for her than the opponent pushing you into unfavorable positions. If the Millia is struggling by being outpressured too, there is always yellow RC on the table to try and return to neutral.

You're missing the point LK is trying to make, think about how easy or hard it is reach the "win condition" for each of the characters in the matchup. Potemkin's core character concept is that he lacks the mobility other characters and has to gamble with his health to get into a position where he is strong. Burst puts him back to fullscreen and he has to do the whole song and dance again. Millia converts any stray 2K 2D into party time and eating a burst, while annoying, isn't a massive hindrance.

@@ArkadijsZaptesburka I understand that part, and when i say "mistakes" i'm counting in the times you let your oponent reach his win condition, but we gotta remember it's a condition, not a guarantee. Even if we disregard Potemkin's incredible anti-airs and Potemkin Buster beign faster than Millia's 2P, he would still be allowed to fail to read Millia's mix a bunch of times before dying. While Millia on the other hand, even with burst, will be exploded with a single good read from Potemkin since his grabs are guaranteed damage and knockdown. A good example of what i'm trying to say (about this matchup specific) is the match between Koji Kog and Teresa on ICFC Asia grand finals.

Burst can be blocked so that makes it unreliable. That is something the developers need to fix.
@RushdownXIX3 жыл бұрын
That's completely intentional. If you burst poorly then you get punished for it.

Lmao, if they call out your burst and block that's on you. Since if you don't burst of their read block, they don't get to keep pressure on you.

@@ggez4981 I play Potemkin you can hit me as much as you want but just know you screw up then you will be pay for it with 3/4 or your entire hp bar. I don't want to burst because I want people to be beside me when I wake up and they take a command grab to the face. I only offensive burst. I made the comment because new players are going to be the ones that struggle with it. You're right though if burst couldn't be blocked then offensive burst couldn't happen thank you for pointing out the light of my error.

This imparts almost no useful knowledge that isn't incredibly obvious whatsoever aside from "be aware of you opponent's win condition". Not a single player on this planet is gonna burst a Potemkin sweep because they might get 2x buster'd after this and die. And if they do burst it, it's still wrong. The rest of this video doesn't amount to much more than "Just Burst 4head". Even if the advice is, burst in situations where you deny the position your opponent wants to take, which is key knowledge for formulating a plan against all characters, it's still essentially "burst exists". It's not that this is bad advice or a bad video, but when you've titled it the way you have, as if you're about to impart knowledge that's gonna change everything about the way I view the game or some shit, what you've actually put in the video can be described as milquetoast at best by comparison.

I disagree on the burst vs Pot, sweep is potentially round ending. How you burst is key and will directly affect how you view a match.
