He did three videos from this same album. Each a masterpiece of art. The other two are "The Raven that Refused To Sing" and "Drive Home". Each dealing with various aspects of loss and grief. I think it would be good for your soul to watch them as well.

2 albums but yeah, the other two are also must watches. The Raven is one of the saddest songs I've ever heard and Drive Home contains my favorite guitar solo of the 21st century. Both videos are deeply emotional and I love how all three of them use different art styles. Jess and Steven are both geniuses.

This incredible song brings out more emotions than any song I have ever heard. It is a masterpiece in my opinion. I'm a 57-year-old guy and every time I hear this song along with seeing this brilliantly done animation video I am a complete mess. I'm practically swimming in my tears. Just today while seeing this video I finally noticed that a newspaper on the floor mentioned a father and two sons getting killed in a school shooting. It's enough to make anyone feel like an arrow just pierced their heart. Steven Wilson is a musical genius and all the musicians in his band are incredibly talented. I think that this song is the epitome of how music can connect with and affect peoples' emotions. Just brilliant!

Glad to see that this moves you as much as me. Moving songs is what Steven does best as a solo artist. He has an amazing range of genre across his solo work too putting me in mind of Bowie as like a chameleon he changes tack between albums. It is all of excellent quality though as is the work with his band Porcupine Tree. You could spend many many happy hours exploring his solo discography and that of Porcupine Tree.

The saddest thing is, that it only has 4.8 million views after 8 years. Truly a stunning piece of music and video. Steven is a superb songwriter and the musicians he had on this album are among the best in the world. A happy thing is, Steven has a huge catalogue of music for you to experience. Enjoy. She's a shell, and her eyes are so dark you'd almost think someone slapped her two blue eyes. It's so painful and sad to see, I'm tearing up rn thinking about it. He was such a good boy. If you want to better understand this album, Steven Wilson's Hand. Cannot. Erase., you need to read the story of a beautiful young English woman named Joyce Vincent. To overly simplify the story, Joyce was a beautiful lady, she worked, had friends, had 4 sisters, etc. She died alone in her apartment in London, and no one noticed that she was gone... for nearly 3 years, until her skeleton was discovered in front of her still playing TV. How, in this day and age, can a young, vibrant person die, and no one notices for years - even her own family? There is an interesting documentary about her called Dreams Of A Life, which came out in 2011. Steven Wilson wrote this album about her story. He took some creative liberties, of course, but the themes of this album are about Joyce, connectedness, loss, loneliness, and more. Now you know more of the story behind this album and the ethereal, sad songs that Wilson was inspired to write.

So glad you've found a song that you can hold to yourself... and use as a catharsis as and when you need it. The song "In My Life" written by John Lennon and one of the Beatles early songs does that for me and was the release I needed after the death of my father. Being an old git I had grown up with the songway back in the sixties... and heard it over and over.... but after his death it took on a whole new meaning and now reminds me of him, in a good way, whenever I hear it. Keep on Rocking man and do take a journey into Steven Wilson and his band Porcupine Tree if you can.

Steven Wilson has many faces. This song is from the beginning of his solo career. And together with "Drive home" and "The Raven that refused to sing" are still the most cited works of him. The rest of his solo works are very much neglected, which is unfortunate, because imho he had many very good stuff coming out. Anyways, I had more or less the same reaction to this song like you first time hearing, although I did not experience the same things. but if you have a heart and somehow care about people, you must feel something in this. It's just too sad for me in this moment in life. Currently I prefer to look forward instead of looking back. take care of yourself, tommy. I'll come back to you soon suggesting some more Wilson in the future. Something very different you probably wouldn't expect after this one ;) Thanks to the wonderful patreon recommending this!! ❤

The video amplifies the impact of the song by something like x3 to x10. The song is already great but combined with the video it's really powerful. Some people don't like sad songs when they're griefing. For me it always helped to actually amplify my own emotions. The evening when my dad passed away (almost 17 years ago) I had "Within Temptation - Forgiven" on repeat for hours. Just let it all out and recover quick. Though people handle such situations differently. Some can't cope with them after years.

I see that at least one other person has recommended the most obvious 2 other songs by the same artist as potential follow ups for you: "The Raven that Refused to Sing" and "Drive Home". For both of these Steven has released official videos of a quality and impact equal to what you have just watched. I will not spoil the impact of these 2 songs by telling you what they are about, I am sure you will come to see as the songs/videos unfold - just as you did on this masterpiece. There are literally scores of other tracks that I could recommend, but perhaps lets leave it with these 2 for starters. The man is a pure genius and there is noone else like him still writing and performing today. Please enrich your file by exploring his work further. Thank you for being so honest and open. It is so refreshing in this day and age.

As a quick follow up - once you have reacted to these 2 offical videos, there are 2 live versions taken from his 2018 Home Invasion DVD that you must listen to and watch. Routine - recorded during a sound check for that concert and The Raven which was the very closing song. Once you have seen and understood the message behind both of these by seeing the official video, the impact of watching them be performed live (with the videos playing behind the band) lifts the human impact to even higher levels for me.

Hey man listened to your whole reaction and I just wanna say something to you from man to man. Don't apologise for your emotions my dear brother. As you said so yourself, this is what music does. But you don't need to downplay your story comparing it to the story in this song. Yes, you did not lose your loved ones: they're still alive. But you did lose them in a way, and it's ok to feel sad, lonely and cry about that. I've always been a sensitive introvert too. Done a lot of crying. Done a lot of apologizing too. Done too much. At one particular point in my life I kinda broke - and I just knew, I just felt it. This is a turn in my life where there's no coming back from. Something inside of me broke that day, and I'll never be able to repair it. Since that day I stopped crying. I stopped sharing. I stopped caring. But I'm always coming back to music like this, since music is the sole thing left in this world that's capable of making me feel human again. The sole thing that's capable of making my emotions alive again, for a short period of time. Since that one day no one has ever seen me cry anymore, but I do still cry with my friend Music. Moral of the story is: don't be like me. I broke, and now I can't cry anymore without music. I can't feel anymore, without music. Don't apologize my friend. Your emotions are worthy, are valid, and you do well to let them take over from time to time, because otherwise that same part that broke inside of me might break inside of you and you'll lose part of your humanity with it. Much strength to you my friend. I wish I could hug you and could talk to you if only just for a moment of distraction. You want people to know that we can sit in this darkness together, well, I wanna sit in that darkness together next to you. But I can't, so i'm writing this. I feel you, cuz this song tears me up everytime again and again, even now after 10 or somewhat years of knowing this song. And it's ok. Let your emotions be, when they need to be. Don't push them away, because one day you'll find that you have succeeded. And you'll miss them. I don't have all these new social apps, and I don't know your email otherwise I would've put this in an email. But here it is anyway. best of luck in life to you my dear fellow man.

If you are willing, dive into the 17 minutes of epicness of the song "Anesthetize" and listen to the lyrics.
