Don't have a name for it, but the best for a hitchball or saddle horn goes like this: Loop the rope. Place the two strands around the ball or horn. Run the loop under the two strands going around the ball or horn. Place the open loop over the ball or horn. Easily removed no matter how much pressure is applied.

But let me be a bit more detailed: Make a loop by bending the end of the rope back to itself, Take the loop in one hand and the doubled strands in the other, Place the doubled strands over a protruding object like the hitch ball on the back of a vehicle, Now you should still have the loop in the same hand and the doubled strands in the other, Feed the loop from one hand under the doubled strands, Now place the loop over the ball and pull tight.

@@greatknot If you don't know this is a scaffold knot, don't know it will be very difficult to untie after significant load is put on it, don't realise this makes it completely impractical for putting round a towball (whereas if tied around a carabiner it IS practical because the knot becomes easy to untie after the carabiner is slid out)....AND have to ask in your reply "how to tie a good knot this way".....then WHAT ON EARTH are you doing making videos and publishing them? Get some education and experience first.

ropist here- this knot will NOT untie on you, if you put pressure on it. I don't mean alot of pressure, just a few kilos. You will have to cut. Safe, but very bad idea. instead you can google fot a Clove Hitch. also very easy zo tie, compact, safe, AND... you can untie it.

@@greatknot nah, the poacher's hitch or scaffold hitch (the latter has one more turn) is a terrific hitch for the right application (it is technically a hitch because without the object you've tied it around, it goes away - try it and see). Poacher's hitch is great for fixing a carabiner to the end of a line, or tying a line directly to an attachment point on a rescue litter -- it constricts tightly so there's no wasted space due to rope slack. I've never had to cut a poacher's hitch after applying fairly heavy loads to it. A clove hitch in the same application wouldn't be acceptable precisely because it is too adjustable; if I clove hitched a carabiner onto the end of a rope and connected the carabiner to a rescue litter, there would be too much risk of the clove working loose during slack moments in a lowering/raising operation (eg moving the empty litter to the edge; moving the litter around at the bottom to get the patient into it).

Yes, you should also never tie anything stretchy to a towball. If the ball or rope breaks a huge amount of energy can be unleashed with potentially disastrous consequences. Use a chain or non-stretchy strap or similar.

There may be types of rope where this hitch would be difficult to open back up (that is, make the loop big again), but for the most part the poacher's hitch or scaffold hitch (scaffold is poachers with one more turn) will open back up; untying the overhand portion of it may take a bit of effort after a heavy load, but it's not impossible.

@@greatknotif you need to put serious weight on it then the ball can break at its narrowest and become a lethal cannonball. Happened many times to 4wd people. But in your case the whole towbar will probably break before the ball. Always better to remove towball and shackle to the hole. Or tie to hole if desperate for a shackle.
